It's back to school time so Mr. 80sat40fan has to get back into grading mode. I'll grade the Top 40 tunes from 8/31/85 and 8/28/71. In looking at the charts, both charts would be like teaching an Advanced Placement class (with the '71 chart having a few "how did you get admitted to this class" tunes ). My grades for the 8/31/85 Top 40 tunes:A+: Freeway Of Love*, Summer of '69, Invincible A: We Don't Need Another Hero, Shout, You're Only Human, Money For Nothing, Pop Life, Freedom, What About Love, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Shame, Oh Sheila, Cry, Lonely Ol' Night, Every Step Of The WayA-: The Power Of Love, St. Elmo's Fire (Man In Motion), Everytime You Go Away, Life In One Day, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), Dress You Up, There Must Be An Angel, Take On Me B+: Never Surrender, Cherish, Don't Lose My Number, Saving All My Love For You, Glory Days, I Wonder If I Take You Home B: Dare Me, Who's Holding Donna Now, C-I-T-Y B-: Smokin' In The Boys Room, Rock Me Tonight, Live Every Moment, No Lookin' Back C+: Mystery Lady C: When Your Heart Is Weak C-: State Of The Heart No D's, No F's. Usual ratings would result in 30 favorites with 16 absolute faves. My grades for the 8/28/71 Top 40 tunes:A+: Mercy Mercy Me, Liar, Smiling Faces Sometimes, Spanish Harlem*, Beginnings, Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, Ain't No Sunshine, Riders On The Storm, Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get, The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down A: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Mr. Big Stuff, Indian Reservation, It's Too Late/I Feel The Earth Move, Won't Get Fooled Again, Maggie MaeA-: Take Me Home Country Roads, Signs, You've Got A Friend (J. Taylor), Hot Pants B+: Draggin' The Line, I Just Want To Celebrate, Love The One You're With B: Sweet Hitchhiker, I Woke Up In Love This Morning, If Not For You, Stick Up, Bring The Boys Home, Go Down Gamblin', You've Got A Friend (R. Flack/D. Hathaway) B-: Tired Of Being Alone, Where You Lead C+: Never Ending Song, Rings, Bangladesh, Mighty Clouds Of Joy C-: Maybe Tomorrow D-: Go Away Little Girl, Saturday Morning Confusion F: What The World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham Martin & John (Tom Clay version) Usual ratings would result in 23 favorites with 16 absolute faves. I am sure some may not be happy with my grade for the Tom Clay tune but it just seems so out of place on radio (the same would go for tunes like "Americans" for me, as an example). If you disagree, I understand. * A double dose or Aretha is being featured for This Week's Pick Hits. Fourteen years between these two hits, yet she's right at home on the chart both times:

[...] Hey, trekkielo ... How do you suddenly add seven Madonna songs and four Wham songs to your favorites list? This may demand an AT40 investigation... Are now Madonna and Wham ! already better than ELO ... listenerwants2know No way! Hey trekkielo ... about 4 weeks ago, I asked why you suddenly added a number of Madonna and Wham/George Michael tunes to previous listings. That got deleted from your post. Today, you added another Wham tune to a list from just a couple of weeks ago. Just curious if you were just named president of the George Michael Fan Club or why you may be discovering that you like many George Michael tunes. Sorry about that, no, I've just done a rediscovering of Madonna and Wham! songs which were overplayed on old terrestrial radio around my area in The 80's, then made the decision to add those onto my previous, now present favorite songs lists as I do like/enjoy 'em, not wait until next year, plain & simple! PS Hey 80sat40fan ... where's your weekly favorites post from last week for 8/24/74, 8/18/79 or 8/18/84?

^ My favorites from the ‘74 and ‘84 shows are listed in the 8th post on the previous page. I don’t feature my faves from any B shows (like last week’s ‘79 show) as these lists could get really long if I were to include them.
You are right… terrestrial radio can get super repetitive with many artists. I’ve enjoyed SiriusXM radio almost exclusively for 3+ years now and enjoy it much more than local radio. SiriusXM can be a little repetitive with Pink Floyd, Nirvana and Pearl Jam but with most other artists, they get it right.

8/31/85:Aretha Franklin - Freeway Of Love Cock Robin - When Your Heart Is Weak John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - C-I-T-Y REO Speedwagon - Live Every Moment Whitney Houston - Saving All My Love For You15 years of the golden globe on KapitelplatzFrom a controversial work of art to a landmark of Salzburg - the man on the golden ball on Kapitelplatz has truly had a remarkable career. The sculpture has stood on one of the most prominent squares in the old town for exactly 15 years.
It´s all a question of perspective: Because the man with the sphere fits so wonderfully in a cell phone photo - with the fortress in the background - the sculpture from 2007 has long been the most photographed motif. The picture is shared on social networks - as proof, so to speak: Look, I was in Salzburg. "I find it exciting because you see the man on top from all sides and have the feeling: There´s someone standing there - until you realize that it´s not actually real," says a vacationer from Vienna. "The sphere is beautiful because it radiates such a golden light," adds a young vacationer from Munich.
The sculpture´s creator is Luxembourgian-German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol. That he has created an additional landmark for Salzburg is something Balkenhol is "proud of, of course. It´s a nice feeling. But it´s also a stroke of luck to have done the right thing in the right place at the right time." The two-ton gilded sphere also includes its counterpart, the "Woman in the Rock" in the Mönchsberg wall in Toscaninihof. As a total work of art, the two sculptures are called "Sphaera." The location of the sculpture was the subject of heated debate and controversy in 2007. But the Salzburg Foundation pushed through its initiative and financed the art.
"Salzburg is, after all, full of landmarks: The fortress, the cathedral, all kinds of things," says former Festival President Helga Rabl-Stadler. "But this is the landmark from the 21st century." From above, observed from the fortress, the size of the work of art clearly diminishes. The man on the sphere shrinks next to the cathedral - so it's all a matter of perspective. World-famous are also the hits of the following " world hits"-edition: 8/31/85:A-Ha - Take On Me Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days
Bryan Adams - Summer Of ´69
Eurythmics - There Must Be An Angel Huey Lewis & The News - Power Of Love Time for an extra: Fun FactorySummer hits from the 90s - this week from 1995: Fun Factory started as a studio project in 1990 by Rainer Kesselbaur. He released a synthesizer-sounding Fun Factory´s Theme for the first time in 1990 under a small record company near Bremen, as a vinyl only, in small quantity.
With their high-explosive mixture of pop, dance, rap, techno and reggae elements, they achieved international acclaim and their singles topped the charts the world over. Tracks such as "Groove Me", "Take Your Chance", "Close To You", "Pain" and most of all "I Wanna Be With You" and also "Celebration" made their way into the top ranks of all important at Media Control and Dance Charts. And not only in Germany, Fun Factory tracks have climbed high in the charts in Canada, England, Sweden, the Far East, Finland, Poland, France, Italy and in the USA as well, and have made the group one of the most remarkable European acts internationally. During 12 months they toured three times in the USA, in South East Asia and in the whole of Europe. Doing shows and having a direct contact with their public was very important for the band members too. Their stage act was pure entertainment, conceived and developed to perfection by Steve and Smooth T who both had a background in the martial arts. "Combining elements of the martial arts and dance creates something totally new. We don't want any lame disco choreography, we want real action entertainment" explained Steve. In 2021, original Fun Factory members left the project (once again). They keep touring under the name S.T.S.B. aka Fun Factory:

I know "Valley Girl" is considered a novelty hit but if you listen closely, the song has as an incredible bass line (most evident from 4:00 - 4:32 in the link below). Meanwhile, there are numerous things to love about "Barracuda" but the drumming from 3:14 - 4:04 in the link below is awesome: BONUS OBSERVATION: If my math is right, there are only 4 artists who have songs on both the 9/3/77 and 9/4/82 shows: The Steve Miller Band, Crosby Stills & Nash, Donna Summer, and Fleetwood Mac. Both Fleetwood Mac and CS&N have hits in both Top 10s.

9/4/82 (A):A Flock Of Seagulls - I Ran (So Far Away) Crosby, Stills And Nash - Wasted On The WayJoan Jett and the Blackhearts - Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah) Marshall Crenshall - Someday, Someway The Pointer Sisters - American Music 9/6/86 (B):Belinda Carlisle - Mad About You Double - The Captain Of Her Heart Miami Sound Machine featuring Gloria Estefan - Words Get In The WayNu Shooz - Pont Of No Return Paul McCartney - Press A giant smileyDrivers along Oregon 18 this time of year might spot something strange in the forested hillside of rural Polk County – two eyes and a wide grin. The giant smiley face made of trees appears every fall as the trees´ needles change color. It´s visible near mile-marker 25 on Oregon 18, between the towns of Grand Ronde and Willamina. But how did it get there ? The face is located on Hampton Lumber timberland. Company spokesperson Kristin Rasmussen said in an email that the smiley face was designed and planted in 2011 by Hampton Lumber co-owner David Hampton and the company´s then-timberland manager, Dennis Creel. "After every harvest, our foresters start planning the reforestation process," she wrote. "They typically plant a variety of native species depending on the elevation and soil conditions, including Douglas fir, western hemlock, noble fir and western red cedar." While the eyes and mouth were planted with Douglas fir, the "yellow" of the smiley face was created by planting larch trees. "Larch is a conifer with needles that turn yellow and drop off in the fall, which is why the smiley face is best visible this time of year," Rasmussen wrote. Planting crews used a rope to plot the circle and triangulate the location for the eyes and mouth. The face is about 300 feet in diameter. Passersby will be able to see the smiling face every fall for the next 30-50 years, until the trees are ready to be harvested and processed into lumber at Hampton´s sawmills in Willamina and Tillamook. The following editions will probably also bring a smile to your face, as they contain well-known songs: 9/4/82 (A):Billy Idol - Hot In The City Kim Wilde - Kids In America REO Speedwagon - Keep The Fire Burnin´ Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra 9/6/86 (B):Bananarama - Venus Billy Joel - A Matter Of Trust Glass Tiger - Don´t Forget Me (When I´m Gone) Tina Turner - Typical Male Wham ! - The Edge Of Heaven Time for an extra: MC HammerSummer hits from the 90s - this week from 1990: MC Hammer (or simply Hammer) was a bat boy for the Oakland A´s baseball team, and got the name " Hammer" because he looked like baseball legend Hank Aaron, who was known as "Hammerin´ Hank." Some members of The A´s helped finance Hammer´s rap career, and he emerged from the West Coast rap scene in the late 80s, representing Oakland. "U Can´t Touch This" was released in January 1990 a month ahead of his third album, Please Hammer, Don´t Hurt ´Em. The music is based on "Super Freak" by Rick James. That song was a hit in 1981, so many younger listeners did not know the beat was sampled. In a strange irony, Hammer got a huge boost from MTV, who put the video in heavy rotation. In 1981, however, they refused to play "Super Freak," as they didn´t play videos by black artists with any regularity. Rick James tried to keep rappers from sampling his music, turning down any requests. According to James, his lawyers authorized the "Super Freak" sample without his permission; he heard about it when a friend told him about "U Can´t Touch This" and the song came on the radio they were listening to in the car. James said he was irate, but somewhat appeased when he found out how much money it was making for him. Still, he claimed he wouldn´t have done the deal if he was asked.
James had another beef as well: he wanted to be listed as a songwriter on "U Can't Touch This," and sued MC Hammer for credit. The case was settled out of court, with James getting listed as a co-writer on the track along with Hammer and Alonzo Miller, a disc jockey who wrote some lyrics on "Super Freak." Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this song called "I Can´t Watch This," which is about bad TV programs, which are "as much fun as watching paint dry." from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."
