7/12/86: 38 Special - Like No Other Night Belinda Carlisle - Mad About You Howard Jones - No One Is To BlameThe Fixx - Secret Separation The Outfield - All The Love In The World The Rolling Stones LiveIt seems as if they are tireless. The Rolling Stones have been thrilling millions of fans worldwide for 60 years. Despite their advanced age, the Stones fill stadiums around the world and are not afraid to deliver rousing stage shows. With their "Sixty Tour", the Rolling Stones are performing in Austria again for the first time since their concert in Spielberg five years ago. The mystery surrounding the British band, with the stuck-out tongue as their logo, creates a fascination that spans several generations. The band kicked off their big European tour last month in Madrid. Vienna is one of the 14 tour stops in ten different countries that the Stones are touring together with their entourage. The first time the Stones stepped on an Austrian stage was in 1965. Back then, they performed in the Vienna Stadthalle with the original line-up, of which only Mick Jagger and Keith Richards remain today. Hits like "Satisfaction" were also in the setlist back then. After the last Austria concert took place in Spielberg, Styria, in front of 95,000 fans, this year they are back at Happel Stadium where they have already performed five times, most recently in 2014. As so often suspected in the past, this is also said to be possibly the last Stones concert in Austria. Greatest hits are also the songs of the following edition, this time in a " live" version: 7/12/86:Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene --> liveBob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - Like A Rock --> liveGenesis - Invisible Touch --> liveJourney - Suzanne --> livePrince & The Revolution - Mountains --> liveTime for an extra: Kate Yanai
Summer hits from the 90s - this week from 1991:
Kate Markowitz is frustrated. She actually wanted to pursue a career as a solo star. Instead, she is constantly on the road as a background singer - for Diana Ross and Randy Newman, among others. Her famous father, the legendary film composer Richard Markowitz, has a lot of connections in the music business, but he can´t help her in this case either. But as luck would have it, Kate suddenly receives an enticing offer during a tour of France with France Gall. She is to lend her voice to a one-minute commercial for a high-proof drink. Kate accepts the assignment and only a short time later the music from the clip enjoys such popularity that the first copies are played in European discotheques. Composer Olivier Bloch Laine senses a big opportunity and produces a complete song with Kate from the music snippet - only the lyrics are changed without advertising. Released under the pseudonym Kate Yanai, "Summer Dreamin'" actually becomes a mega-success and the summer hit of 1991. Today Kate Markowitz alias " Kate Yanai" works again as a background singer for stars like James Taylor or Billy Joel. "Summer Dreamin'" remained her only hit as a solo singer. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

Either I am in E-Z Grader mode or these are two outstanding countdowns... My Top 35 songs from the 7/23/83 countdown with 10 absolute faves in bold:Top 10: All of 'em! Hearing W(IHAPOY) on SiriusXM's First Wave a little more often has really warmed me up to that song. I am still shocked Y&M doesn't get more airplay today as it's one of my all-time favorite ballads. With the album version of both songs, I love the extended instrumental endings: And now, for a listenerwants2know feature ... since both of these countdowns have July 23 as their chart date... Did you know this Saturday, July 23 is National Vanilla Ice Cream Day? I'm not sure why National Vanilla Ice Cream Day is just six days after National Ice Cream Day... but given Vanilla just moved down a notch to #3 on the list of America's favorite ice cream flavors, how about a feature song featuring Vanilla, Ice or Cream? According to the Ultimate Music Base, there hasn't been a song with "Vanilla" in the title to be played on American Top 40 during the classic Casey/Shadoe era. These songs with "Ice" in their titles made AT40 in the Casey/Shadoe era: "Cold As Ice" by Foreigner, "Fire & Ice" by Pat Benetar, "Pieces Of Ice" by Diana Ross (played on this weekend's 80s show), and "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice. Only two songs with "Cream" in their title charted on AT40 between 1970 - 1994: "Shaving Cream" by Benny Bell, and "Cream" by Prince & The New Power Generation. As an extra, here's Prince's #1 hit from 1991, "Cream":

As an extra, here's Prince's #1 hit from 1991, "Cream": Thanks for the information, however, there are apparently still several ice cream holidays in America: 1/13 - National Peach Melba Day 1/15 - National Strawberry Ice Cream Day 2/5 - Ice Cream For Breakfast Day 2/6 - National Frozen Yogurt Day 6/7 - National Chocolate Ice Cream Day 6/25 - National Strawberry Parfait Day 7/1 - Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day 7/7 - National Strawberry Sundae Day 7/17 - National Ice Cream Day 7/23 - National Vanilla Ice Cream Day 8/2 - National Ice Cream Sandwich Day 8/14 - National Creamsicle Day 8/25 - National Banana Split Day 8/26 - National Cherry Popsicle Day 9/2 - National Blueberry Popsicle Day 9/6 - National Coffee Ice Cream Day 9/22 - National Ice Cream Cone Day 11/11 - National Sundae Day 11/25 - National Parfait Day The day of action for vanilla ice cream refers mainly to ice cream flavored with real vanilla beans. Artificial vanillin is widely used, especially since the stocks of vanilla beans are not at all sufficient to supply the entire world population. Moreover, as the 2nd most expensive spice after saffron, real vanilla is extremely expensive, since its special aroma can only be produced by a complex fermentation process. Real vanilla ice cream - like bourbon vanilla from Africa - is a delight both on its own, when the aroma is fully developed, and in combination with other types of ice cream. Vanilla ice cream goes just as well in a chocolate sundae with sauce as it does with a fruit ice cream mix. Especially delicious is hot apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. And another good news: vanilla is extremely healthy and even has an aphrodisiac effect ... Here´s - outside the AT40 - my current " ice"-edition: Beagle Music Limited - Like Ice In The Sunshine Bolland & Bolland - Tears Of IceIce MC - Easy Marietta - Fire And IceStatus Quo - Ice In The Sun And speaking of 7/23 ... 7/23 Beginning of the Dog Days (of summer) The Dog Days (of summer) are colloquially referred to in Europe as the hot days in summer, more precisely in the period from 7/23 to 8/23 and are named after the constellation "Great Dog". At this time of the year, the hottest air of the entire summer can be brought to Europe from southwestern to southeastern Europe if there is an appropriate constellation of high and low pressure areas. In addition, the sun still has a lot of power and can, under certain circumstances, further heat up the air mass brought to Europe. Daytime highs between 33 and 37 degrees Celsius are then not uncommon and at times the air can be extremely muggy and humid. Often there are tropical nights, where the lowest temperature does not cool down below 20 degrees Celsius until shortly before sunrise. Finally, let´s take a quick look at the ice cream flavors: strawberry, vanilla and chocolate are consistently the most popular ice cream flavors in Austria. And from 2004, here are Soul Control with "Chocolate" (Choco Choco):

7/23/83:Culture Club - I´ll Tumble 4 Ya Rick Springfield - Human Touch Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You GoThe Human League - (Keep Feeling) Fascination The Tubes - She´s A Beauty 50 Years of the Salzburg Regional StudioThe Landesstudio Salzburg, which was officially opened with a ceremony on 7/21/1972 and an "Open Day" on 7/22, was the first in a series of new ORF regional studios built to the same design - made financially possible by a new broadcasting law as a result of the 1967 broadcasting referendum. It was the waning days of 1968, and all of Europe was in a state of upheaval. Electronic media were gaining more and more importance. In the years since ORF was founded, Radio Salzburg was housed in Salzburg´s old town - in the Franciscan monastery on Franziskanergasse. Georg Steinitz, later "Salzburg today" presenter for many years, joined ORF in 1967. He experienced firsthand the relocation of the state studio out to the greenfield site in Salzburg´s Nonntal - and also the resistance within the building to the modern, new home. "There was that," Steinitz recalls. "The director at the time had three large farm chests - beautifully painted ones - and he had them brought to the new broadcasting house. They then stood for 48 hours at most - because then the architect Gustav Peichl came, was horrified and immediately ordered them removed. In general, he was a very strict interpreter of design for 'his´ building. Everything was composed through and through - right down to the wastebaskets. They were standardized, just like the ashtrays. If you then put a flowerpot somewhere, he didn´t really like that at all."
Gustav Peichl, the architect of the new ORF regional studio, placed a building that was revolutionary for its time directly on the border of the protected grassland: "The figuration alone and the use of new building methods and new designs - such as the windows and the doors," describes Horst Gaisrucker, who worked in building supervision at the time. "These were all experiments that were very well prepared in the studio. And Salzburg was that construction site where the experiments were carried out." It was a difficult construction site: the subsoil, a marl soil, was difficult, the high groundwater table, and on top of that there was the time pressure. Because the Salzburg studio had to be the first of the four regional studios under construction at the same time to be finished - namely before the opening of the Salzburg Festival in 1972.
And here´s my danceable " birthday"-edition: 7/23/83:ELO - Rock´n´Roll Is King Elton John - I´m Still Standing Michael Sembello - Maniac Taco - Puttin´ On The Ritz
The Kinks - Come Dancing Time for an extra: Los Del RioSummer hits from the 90s - this week from 1996: The two friendly older gentlemen of " Los Del Río" are Rafael Ruiz Perdigones and Antonio Romero Monge. Both come from near Seville and have been making music together since the mid-60s. Not only in Spain, but also in South America, the two have been known and loved for decades. When they give concerts in Venezuela in 1992, the two music stars are invited to a lavish party that is to change their lives. Everyone who is anyone in Venezuela is at this party, even the then President Perez does the honors. Flamenco dancer Diana Patricia Cubillán Herrera is also there and amazes the two guests from Spain with a little dance performance. So much so that Rafael and Antonio spontaneously think up a cheeky lyric to the music and sing it out loud. This is the birth of "Macarena".
Back in Spain, Los del Río put their song, invented while dancing flamenco, on record. This record in turn finds its way to three young, hip American music producers. They like the catchy "Macarena" song and make it suitable for disco. They put a couple of pretty swimwear models at the side of the two somewhat clumsy singers. And the summer hit of 1996 is ready. from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

8/1/81 (A):Air Supply - The One That You LoveFrankie and the Knockouts - You´re My Girl Joey Scarbury - Theme From "Greatest American Hero" (Believe It Or Not) Ronnie Milsap - There´s No Gettin´ Over Me The Greg Kihn Band - The Breakup Song (They Don´t Write ´Em) 7/27/85 (B):Amy Grant - Find A Way Freddie Jackson - Rock Me TonightKim Carnes - Crazy In The Night (Barking At Airplanes) Survivor - The Search Is OverThe Power Station - Get It On (Bang A Gong) Summer FeelingsFrom January 1997 to December 2020, Austria´s HItradio Ö3 released a total of 90 samplers with the latest hits from the charts. One of the most interesting covers was found on the sampler of the summer of 2000 (Volume 11). An ice cream with the logo of Ö3, which is still current today.
And although there were various marketing campaigns over the years, such as "The Ö3 Bread Roll", this ice cream was never actually produced - a mixture of vanilla, strawberry and blueberry would perhaps be quite interesting here. But regardless of the existence of an Ö3 ice cream, the following " summer"-editions do give themselves a certain summer feeling: 8/1/81 (A):Daryl Hall & John Oates - You Make My Dreams Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes Ray Parker Jr. & Raydio - A Woman Need Love (Just Like You Do) Stars On 45 - Medley The Commodores - Lady (Your Bring Me Up) 7/27/85 (B):Aretha Franklin - Freeway Of Love Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days Depeche Mode - People Are People Madonna - Angel Phil Collins - Don´t Lose My Number Time for an extra: Lou Bega
Summer hits from the 90s - this week from 1999:
In the 8/1/81 show, we learn that the Cuban-Mexican bandleader Perez Prado spent a total of 26 weeks in the Top 40 with "Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White." Known as the "King of the Mambo", Prado recorded numerous mambos and when he ran out of inspiration, he would simply number them. "Mambo No 5" was one of a series of 8. Perez Prado´s version was instrumental and in 1999 German pop musician Lou Bega added lyrics to it, transforming it into a love song for several women, namely Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary and Jessica. In an interview Lou Bega mentioned: "When I wrote the song, I believed it could be the thing it is today. All people hate it completely, that´s what I thought. I knew it wouldn´t swim in the middle because it was too different from all the stuff that was outside, so I´m quite happy with it. Mambo makes you happy, Latin music makes you happy, its sexual, its erotic, energetic, I think that´s the point." The story behind the song was a simple one. "I dated a lot of pretty nice ladies when I was younger," he said. "These names of my past, you know, just came to me and I wrote it down, got the melody and the rest is history." It was reported that it´s probably beyond coincidence that eight of the girls in the song have names that happen to end in "A." Asked if he had a favorite, Bega replied, "My favorite is Sandra, that´s why she was the one in the sun." In the year 2000 "Mambo No 5" was the theme song for a very special party (...), until someone noticed the line, "A little bit of Monica in my life." ... from my musical category "daydreamer"My motto: "Not always the often heard hits."

I DON’T NEED YOU –•– Kenny Rogers - I think of this as my favorite Lionel Richie song, even though he neither sang it nor wrote it. HEARTS –•– Marty Balin - One of those good songs we never hear anymore, at least I don't. TOUCH ME WHEN WE’RE DANCING –•– The Carpenters - The last of so many big hits of theirs that only sound better and better as the years pass. REALLY WANNA KNOW YOU –•– Gary Wright - Only four on my list. Yes, it was a slow year!
I WANT YOU TO WANT ME –•– Cheap Trick SHINE A LITTLE LOVE –•– Electric Light Orchestra BOOGIE WONDERLAND –•– Earth, Wind and Fire with the Emotions SAD EYES –•– Robert John I’LL NEVER LOVE THIS WAY AGAIN –•– Dionne Warwick - These last two are a couple of those "uh oh, summer's almost over - it's only 8 o clock and it's already dark" songs.
YESTERDAY ONCE MORE –•– The Carpenters - I wonder if either of them ever imagined back then how timeless their hits would become. SHAMBALA –•– Three Dog Night GIVE ME LOVE (Give Me Peace On Earth) –•– George Harrison GET DOWN –•– Gilbert O’Sullivan - One of those "songs that mention titles of Elizabeth Taylor movies" songs. BEHIND CLOSED DOORS –•– Charlie Rich ANGEL –•– Aretha Franklin MY LOVE –•– Paul McCartney and Wings - I think of this as a late spring song but obviously it had staying power.
DARE ME –•– The Pointer Sisters - A good uptempo record. Appropriate for any occasion. Impervious to criticism. I could listen to this record a dozen times in a row. No, make that a gross. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, records like this are worth a thousand pictures.
