Joe, are there Top 100's for 1966? I recently listened to the 12-24-66 episode on Page 28, but found it to be a Top 40. This is my favorite year for music, and sure would love a Top 100, but did I miss it? Thanks! I remember getting it from the thread, just not sure what page it's on. Will check later after work.

This is most unusual--Dave must have recorded the 1961 episode sometime back--survey date of December 18, 1961.

Dave said next week's presentation is from 1964-I'm thinking the date will be January 4th.

Assuming that 1/4/64 is the featured date,"There!I've Said It Again" by Bobby Vinton will be the last # 1 hit by an American artist before The Beatles led British Invasion changed the course of popular music.

The Beatles would occupy the Top Spot with "I Want To Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," and "Can't Buy Me Love," from 2-1-64 thru 5-2-64. Two American solo acts would occupy the Top Spot in May--Louis Armstrong with "Hello Dolly" and Mary Wells with "My Guy." The Beatles would return with "Love Me Do" in late May 1964. Just amazing! One last note: "Louie Louie" held #2 for six weeks while "Dominque" and "There I've Said It Again" were at #1.

Sort of a "just before the revolution" show. Some time ago Lou Simon hosted a December 1963 show which finished with the Singing Nun's "Dominique", about which Lou joked that if you listen to it closely enough or backwards or something, you can hear a subliminal voice saying "Please....send us the Beatles."

I've always maintained that "Dominique" & "There! I've Said It Again" were successful because folks were still reeling from the assassination of JFK which had occurred a few weeks earlier-They needed something to calm their nerves.

"Louie Louie" was also under investigation for questionable lyrics. With six weeks at #2, it should have had at least one of those weeks at #1!

"Louie Louie" was also under investigation for questionable lyrics. With six weeks at #2, it should have had at least one of those weeks at #1! The Kingsmen reached #1 in both Music Vendor & Cash Box (reportedly based on sales only) while Billboard was supposed to be a combination of radio airplay and sales at the time. I assume that some radio stations were reluctant to play the song, based on what some people considered at the time, to be questionable lyrics--especially with the quality of the recording making it difficult to understand what was being sung.

Survey date is in fact 1-4-64. One month later, the Beatles invasion would take over the Top 40.

There are many music historians who think the arrival of The Beatles in February 1964 was just what we needed after the assassination of JFK three months earlier-They truly lifted our spirits.
