I personnaly prefer a Top 50 or 40 rather than a short Top 30 - from a listener point of view- although i understand that lower positions must be reflecting record labels promotional impact, especially in the Top 100.

Yes. That's what Jonathan King was getting at in his letter to the BPI.

One thing that is interesting concerning possible chart manipulations is the peak positions that some songs reached on just one national chart.

Here's an interesting situation--one of my favorite songs from the 1960's (Knock on Wood-Eddie Floyd) reached #10 in Record World, while that same record only made it to #28 in Billboard and #31 in Cash Box. Generally, I don't think of Record World's charts as being the most accurate but in this case--maybe they were right?!

If you take CCR , they never reached nb 1 on Billboard but they did on Cashbox and Record World.

Good point about CCR.

Makes one wonder how songs like Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising and Lookin' Out My Back Door (#1's in either Record World or Cash Box) couldn't make it to the top in Billboard?

I know that RW & CB were only sales charts at the time but it seems hard to believe that radio wasn't playing those songs in the 1969 & 1970; since BB was a combination of sales and radio airplay.

The other surprising non#1 in Billboard was from 1966-- the Beatles Yellow Sub--a chart topper in the other two.

One observation about the 1965 Countdown is that "A Taste of Honey" will only peak at #7 on BB where it will eventually climb to #1 on CB. Is this the biggest variance of a #1 record (BB vs CB)?

I hope I am not repeating something already posted, but my biggest surprise is the "Dock of The Bay" did not make #1 on CB, but get this, FOUR WEEKS @ #1 on BB! In part it was kept out by "Love Is Blue" which spent 7 weeks on CB. Then even stranger, "Valleri" which peaked at #3 on BB spends two weeks @ #1 on CB and another non-number 1 "Young Girl" the following week! Geeeessshhh! Then agreement comes when "Honey" tops both BB and CB.
