My pick for this week's lost 90s classic was at #82 for both the 12/9/95 and 12/16/95 Hot 100. Weezer was hot at the time with songs like "Buddy Holly", and then bassist Matt Sharp helped with another band called The Rentals. Their first release was a Moog-heavy alternative song called, "Friends of P" which hit the Modern Rock Top 10. In 1995, the band featured a then-unknown keyboardist and background singer named Maya Rudolph who would go on to fame as a Not Ready For Prime Time Player on "Saturday Night Live"... she is featured on the video for their second release, "Waiting".
Here is "Friends Of P"... with Russian subtitles:
I started this thread in late September, and with this pick, I have featured at least one song from each year of the 90s... I don't know if I will be able to keep that consistency up but it has been fun checking out lost 90s hits, and it has been fun having others chime in with their lost classics as well.

Offering up a lost hit from 12/11/93, this was at its peak position of #55 on the Hot 100. A song that features Ann Curless on lead vocals. Expose - As Long As I Can Dream

Maya is the daughter of the late Minnie Ripperton, who had a #1 hit in 1975 with "Lovin' You". She also had a featured role in Mike Judge's insanely funny cult classic film "Idiocracy".

Good nugget there mga. Of course Minnie was singing/saying her daughter's name at the end of that #1 record.

This lost 90s classic from December 8, 1990 serves as a reminder how short life can be. It was released posthumously after one of the brothers died in a helicopter crash after a concert in Alpine Valley, WI on August 27th. This soulful tune reached #65 on the hot 100 during its 9 week chart run. Peaked at #7 on the rock charts. Tick Tock - Vaughan Brothers

Going back to the 12/19/98 chart for this pick. Fastball burst onto the music scene in 1998 with "The Way". While not officially released as a single for the Hot 100, the song spent seven weeks at #1 on the Modern Rock Chart and helped Fastball earn two Grammy nominations and an MTV Award nomination for Best New Artist. They followed up "The Way" with another great tune which peaked at #86 on this week's chart. The guitar, especially at the end, reminds me of Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy". Here is "Fire Escape":

From 12/14/96, this lost 90s classic is a very good R&B cover of Queen's signature song. Roamed around the middle of the charts for 17 weeks, peaking at #42. Bohemian Rhapsody - The Braids

Posting this a couple of days early due to upcoming travels... and this will be the last time I can say I am featuring a song from 15 years ago...
Going back 15 years to the 12/25/99 chart for this tune. Jim Carrey starred as Andy Kaufman in the late 1999 movie release, "Man On The Moon". R.E.M., who sang, "Man On The Moon" earlier in the decade, sang this week's lost 90s classic which was featured in the movie. It debuted this week at #79 and only got as high as #57. Here for your high-def enjoyment is, "The Great Beyond":

It was these German rockers last Hot 100 single, and the follow up to their #4 smash "Wind Of Change". From 12/28/91, this power ballad reached #44 during an 18 week chart run and #8 on the mainstream rock charts. Borrowing from one of their signature songs, the chorus begins with "Here I Am". Instead of "Rock You Like A Hurricane", the chorus continues with "Will you..." Send Me An Angel - Scorpions

Shows how the Hot 100 was now bogus because of Soundscan and also AT40 even though they used a different chart. I had pointed out recently how this easily made it onto CT40 but not AT40. That's bordering on lunacy not to have song like this on a pop top 40 countdown.

A comment and a question... it is amazing that "Send Me An Angel" never hit AT40 considering that they used an airplay chart for the first few months of Soundscan (I think). SMAA hit #23 on Radio & Records chart. Now the question... I found a website which has some Radio & Records chart data... it lists each song to hit their chart, peak position, weeks on the chart, and debut date. The link is here: wweb.uta.edu/faculty/gghunt/charts/chart.htmlIs there any site which has the weekly R&R charts, or CT40 charts?

Actually it shows when a song gets lots of airplay & listeners still don't go into the record store and purchase the single, there's no reason for it to perform on the charts very well. Soundscan showed what people were actually buying and that's what really matters to the recording industry.

SMAA hit #23 on Radio & Records chart. AT40 switched to Billboard's Top 40 Radio Monitor chart. This list used BDS to track actual spins of a record on radio stations. Billboard switched because they were finding many stations on their panels were not actually faithfully playing songs on their playlist and vice versa. R&R was still using playlist data to tabulate their charts. SMAA was likely being reported more than it was actually played at top 40 radio.

True, but BB's chart favored songs heard in larger cities since it was (& still is) based on audience impressions. Going to college in Indiana at the time, I found the R&R chart, while flawed, still more closely represented what I was hearing on the radio than BB's charts.
