This week's pick debuted on the 11/22/97 Hot 100 at #81 but wouldn't get any higher than #66, though it spent 16 weeks on the Hot 100. It is David Bowie's last single to make the chart, and he received some assistance from Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails with this song. It's very industrial sounding yet still has the signature sounds of both Bowie and Trent in the single. If you like alternative rock then you should enjoy, "I'm Afraid Of Americans":

From November 16, 1996 the 90s lost classic is a sixties throwback from a band who wasn't really a band. Song was co-written by Fountains Of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger and Mike Viola who provided the lead vocals. Nominated for an Academy Award from a movie I always watch in bits and pieces when I run across it on TV. The song was at its #41 peak in the middle of a 15 week chart run on the Hot 100. It did reach the top 25 on the Adult Contemporary (#22), Adult Top 40 (#18), and Top 40 Mainstream (#24) charts. Ladies and gentlemen...the O-ne-ders! That Thing You Do! - The Wonders

From this week in 1992 is a hip-hop song that criticizes hip-hop artists who sell out for pop success. Ironically, this song would be the biggest pop hit for the group who recorded it, peaking at #42. Sampling "You Should Be Mine" by Roger, here's EPMD with "Crossover":

From the 11/27/93 chart... Elton John & Kiki Dee were debuting at #77 with another duet. Record execs probably thought they had another smash on their hands but radio thought otherwise as it only peaked at #56. Here is "True Love":
This song was featured on Elton John's CD, "Duets". There are some great duets on this compilation including "Shakey Ground" with Don Henley, "Old Friend" with Nik Kershaw, and "Teardrops" with kd Lang (how did this song not hit the Top 40?!).

Great choice, jlthorpe. Considering the number of hip hop haters on this site, I'm glad to see more fans of the genre here.
Anyway, "Crossover" was more a response to artists who were trying to make the genre seem like a joke when it was serious as a heart attack at the time.

Anyway, "Crossover" was more a response to artists who were trying to make the genre seem like a joke when it was serious as a heart attack at the time. Thanks. I was never a fan of classic hip-hop except for the occasional song here and there, but then last year I started listening to SiriusXM's classic hip-hop channel Backspin and really got into a lot of the songs they played. Plus, I figured I'd diversify the thread a little bit. I might do a non-Hot 100 song in a subsequent post (maybe something that hit the rock tracks chart, since I listened to a lot of those songs in the 90s).

The original version was released in 1992 and peaked at #18 on the Canadian singles chart. The lost 90s classic from 11/29/97 is a re-recording that had entered the charts the previous week. It spent 20 weeks in the Hot 100, peaking at #68. Made it to #23 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. About a year later (not one week ), their next charting single didn't stop until it got to the top. Didn't surprise me in the least that the subject of this song would perform it live in his own concerts. Seems in keeping with his character. Brian Wilson (2000) -Barenaked Ladies

In light of the aftermath of receiving the grand jury decision in Ferguson, MO, it's looks like April 29, 1992 all over again. If Nelly & the St. Lunatics were DITC, they would find this relevant lost classic might become their anthem. This track entered the Billboard Hot 100 on 2/05/1994 peaking at #89. It's the 2nd solo single by the Boogie Down Bronx rapper nicknamed "Blastmaster" and "The Teacher."

From this week in 1998, a song that did not hit the Hot 100, but reached #16 on the modern rock chart. It's a song that's probably more typical of this band's sound than their only chart hit, "Lovefool". Here's the Cardigans with "My Favourite Game".

Annoyed the hell outta everyone too! Wish those morons in Ferguson would just get a clue and realize what a joke their actions has become!

On the 12/3/94 chart, Urge Overkill was zooming up 10 notches to #60 with their only Hot 100 hit. It was a remake of Neil Diamond's hit, "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon", and it was featured in the movie "Pulp Fiction". It's hard to believe that movie was in theaters 20 years ago!
Here is, "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon":

This oft-used song title went top 10 in the hands of Aretha and the Whispers. It also was the title of a great track from Bad Company's debut album and the title of No Doubt's fifth album. Unfortunately when a live recording using the same title was released, it did not fare so well. On 12/2/95, this lost 90s classic was in the second of a 4 week chart run where it would reach no higher than #73. She is a 10 time Grammy award winner and a 2000 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee. He is a Canadian rocker who co-wrote the song with his duet partner in mind, and reached the top of the Hot 100 four times. Rock Steady - Bonnie Raitt / Bryan Adams
