This coming Wednesday, March 5, at 8:00 a.m. ET, GSN (Game Show Network) will be airing Casey Kasem's appearance on The Dating Game from 1967 as part of a marathon to honor Jim Lange, who passed away this past week.
The best part about it? It was never aired before on GSN. For those who have GSN, I recommend you record this gem, since this will likely be a one-time airing of this particular episode, and maybe the last time (or one of the last times) The Dating Game will ever air on GSN.

Sadly, I'll be in school so I won't be able to watch it.

Why would this be the last time "The Dating Game" ever airs on GSN? It's still a perennial favorite.

GSN does not air many old game shows. Most of the ones they've tried tank in the ratings so they stick to a select few now. That's why for a show like Match Game to get what it does at 8am on there is actually pretty good.

The classic shows I'm aware of that air on GSN include "Match Game" (which you mentioned), "Sale of the Century," "Press Your Luck," "Blockbusters" and "Super Password." Except for "Match Game" (which is from the 1970s), each of the classic shows aired in the 1980s. Brian

While we're on the subject of game shows, the only other game show that I can find where Casey Kasem was a guest was "Hollywood Squares," in versions hosted by John Davidson (a 1987 week of episodes) and Tom Bergeron (2003). Interestingly enough, for the 1987 "Squares" episodes at least … the announcer was none other than Shadoe Stevens.

He hosted one in the late 90s called "180" or something like that.

There's also I believe now two shopping game shows that aired on lifetime in the 80s/90s too. But last time I read anything, none of these were doing any great ratings. Jokers Wild & Tic Tac Dough are #2 and #3 on my favorites list behind MG but last time either aired, ratings were very low. So, back to what I was saying earlier, that's why he said he doubts you'll see many if any Dating Game eps from that era on GSN again.

Paul:
If you were to ask me, I'd thought the whole network seems to be rather low-rated. I love the classics just as much as anyone, and got cable just to watch GSN back in its prime (late 1990s and early 2000s), but I think that the golden classics anyway seem to have a rather limited audience and the new "original" shows/remakes I've not been impressed with.

No, but when I saw low ratings, I am saying (help me out OldSchoolAT40fan, I don't remember exactly) Match Game may get 90,000 viewers. Some of the other classics may get 50,000. Whereas reruns of the newer Harvey Feuds do 350K-400K routinely. So, in terms of rating points it doesn't change a whole lot but in terms of advertisers you can sell something on Harvey's Feud other than senior citizen medical equipment.

Understand about the ratings part … except that I can't personally understand the popularity of the current Steve Harvey "Family Feud" myself, given the lewd questions, answers that refer to the human anatomy and so forth. But that's another topic altogether.
To get back to the question of whether we'll see Jim Lange-era "Dating Game" again, I'm going to suggest yes for the simple reason that in a number of cases, this is the only way to pay tribute to celebrities who are recently deceased and appeared on game shows. GSN has been known for doing this throughout its history – namely, "What's My Line?" (where the recent deceased celebrity was a Mystery Guest) – but in some cases, other game shows such as "The Dating Game" is the best way to pay tribute. Such as when both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson died in 2009 … "Dating Game" episodes were shown.
When Casey Kasem does pass on – keeping in mind this is without of course knowing how GSN will actually mark the occasion – I'm guessing we'll either see a repeat of the 1967 "Dating Game" episode, or his appearance on a 2003 "Hollywood Squares" episode (as GSN I believe still holds rights to air the Bergeron-era episodes; I do not believe the network holds the Davidson version in its library); I am not aware that he was ever a Mystery Guest on "What's My Line," as it would have been in the early 1970s syndicated era, and probably late in the run, if he had.
Point – One-time airings of specific episodes is what we'd see … if GSN continues this practice of airing single episodes of newly dead celebrities.

I think what OldSchool meant and I agree with is you won't see Dating Game back on the air in a regular daily or weekly timeslot again. And for that matter, outside of its host who is now gone it's altogether possible you won't see it at all anymore.
As far as when Casey goes, I don't expect GSN will do anything. He wasn't a regular game show celebrity or host. They don't usually just randomly air a tribute to someone who appeared once or twice on something. Now you may see a tribute of sorts on a channel like Boomerang, Cartoon Network, or the Hub as they could air the cartoons he famously voiced. Id say MTV or VH1 Classic could air some of the old Americas Top Ten shows but hell they didn't honor Dick Clark and they aired those old Bandstand episodes previously. So chances are they won't either.

Just saw part of it. Casey was contestant #3 and wasn't chosen. The girl, Linda, chose contestant #1 (Bill Dana). Wouldn't it have been something if she had chosen Casey and eventually became his wife---perhaps he wouldn't have married Jean. Would've been famous as the first "first lady" of American Top 40 a bit later (AT40 never mentioned so this was likely the time before July 1970).

According to this schedule ( files.acrobat.com/a/preview/40909f40-c1c3-4bb0-b632-ed142ad3cad7 ), the episode was from 1967. Bill Dana, who got the date over Casey, also had a comedy record hit the Top 40 in 1961 called "The Astronaut (Parts 1 And 2)" (billed as Jose Jimenez). I wonder if Casey ever mentioned his record on AT40. I'm surprised GSN never aired this episode before, as it also had an appearance by a young Tom Selleck.

But as far as "special" airings (to pay tribute to the recently deceased), just like any celebrity-based game show, it's hard to say. Then again, I haven't exactly kept up on GSN and their "tributes to late celebrities" lately, I admit. It may be that all the Chuck Barris shows (most of them non-politically correct) soon become relics of a past era, who knows? Brian
