Pretty amazing stuff there, freakyflybry. 🙂 Love the Giant Steps song; had that on 45 back in the day. A long lost (shall I say, VERY lost) track. The 7" version is played, which is harder to find, and my preferred version. IIRC, Shadoe plays the UB40 version with the "toasting" in at least most of the shows; I really enjoy that part of the song. We don't hear that version in its initial 1984 chart run. I'll eventually do a 1988 marathon; if I only had the shows back in 2016 (whose calendar mirrors 1988's), I'm sure I would've done it then. Safe travels to Toronto; enjoy your time there!

So freakyflybry was headed to Toronto where he has probably been to by now. The date of OnWithTheCountdown's last post in this thread before mine I was in Iowa riding my first ever 100 mile bike ride. It has taken me this long to get caught up on the Premiere A shows and work around the house such that I can play a show that fits this thread. The rains from Hurricane Debby may allow me to hear several shows over the next few days. After hearing the 1980 show earlier, I have flipped to the other end of the decade for the 8/26/89 CT40. I count only 6 artists in that 1980 show who had hits on or after this show and none of them are in this show. Got a song in that 1980 show that was a candidate for this show but "Into the Night" only appeared on AT40 not CT40. Casey says that the 11th album for the Cure was originally supposed to be a solo project for Robert Smith. But as things progressed, it was obvious that it needed to be a group effort. "Love Song" is the title but had they used the line that is sung the most, it would have had the same title as the Dolly Parton song covered into a huge hit for Whitney Houston...'I Will Always Love You'. Casey names the song that was played the most in the 80s according to the RIAA. It's "I Just Called to Say I Love You". Didn't have that one in my mind! 5 heavy metal bands according to Casey. Except for Bon Jovi, they all had their first hits in 1989...Winger, Skid Row, Great White and Warrant. Flip back a year when Guns 'N Roses also had their first hit, that shows how metal really took off at the end of the 80s, until 1991.

After hearing the 1980 Premiere show and fast forwarding 9 years to the CT40 I went over in the last post, I have done the same thing again with a 9 year jump to the AT40 from 8/29/98. Only one debut and it's "Hooch" by Everything who Casey says are from Sperryville, VA. OnWithTheCountdown has said where he lives and I think it is nearby. Tells a story of how Faith Hill was not listening to Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton are her friends were during her youth but Patsy Cline, who died 4 years before Faith was born. Her favorite song by Patsy is "Crazy" that Casey said was written by a young Willie Nelson. Yes her signature song is a great one. Not remembering whether or not it was ever played on AT40 but must have been played maybe multiple times on ACC over the years. Only one song that has been on AT40 every week since its revival exactly 5 months earlier and that's "Torn", almost certainly my fave song in this show. Fastball's "The Way" gave it a run for its money in that regard. Didn't realize it when Casey said that "This Kiss" with a 6 notch move was the biggest mover was incorrect until he played "One Week" and called it the biggest mover with it being up 7 notches. Barenaked Ladies got a boost from appearing on Beverly Hills 90210.

Yep, I'm about 2.5 hours away from Sperryville. And waiting for Debby to arrive; should be tonight.
Heard another 1998 show this morning, 3/14 (hosted by David Perry). It's one of only two shows as the Top 40 Countdown. I remember hearing this show originally on WAEB, out of Allentown. They still carry AT40 currently.

Just finishing up CT40 from 3/22/1997, guest-hosted by David Perry. However, Mark Elliott can also be heard in the Disney commercials; I had also posted a while back I heard him in the 10/11/1997 network spots.

Yep, I'm about 2.5 hours away from Sperryville. And waiting for Debby to arrive; should be tonight. I hope you and everyone in Rappahannock County are safe! We had something like 6-7 inches around here (central NC). Could have been better, but certainly could have been worse.

Got 8" here. Listening to a show from around the time of a very destructive hurricane, Andrew, the AT40 from 8/29/92. Shadoe goes over days of the week in song titles in association with "Friday I'm in Love" which was the 6th for that day. Only 2 days in double digits, Saturday with 13 and Sunday with 16. Babyface is all over this show debuting with his own hit duet with Toni Braxton and producing and/or writing top 10 hits for Bobby Brown, Boyz II Men and TLC. His brothers in After 7 also had a hit of their own. The thread about extras listed overplayed LDDs, one of which was "I Will Remember You". Actually there are 2 hits with that title that were frequently used as LDDs, and the first instance of either is in this show. Amy Grant's "I Will Remember You" was a LDD and #36 in the countdown. Shadoe with Rob Durkee's assistance always comes up with these factoids that Casey would never divulge. Wonder if he ever mentioned the number of times that 4 artists ever collaborated on a top 40 hit. "The Best Things in Life are Free" is one such hit with Shadoe mentioning how many times each of the 4 artists had hit the top 40. "That's What Friends Are For" would be the most obvious 4 artist collaboration. I am not aware of any others in AT40 history as of then. After playing a clip of the KC & the Sunshine Band original and mentioning their other #1 hits, KWS' "Please Don't Go" was played. Afterward, Shadoe said they would be covering "Rock Your Baby" for their next hit. Not a hit in the US but Shadoe mentioned all the #1 hits that Harry Casey had a hand in during that segment.

AT40 from August 31, 1991.
Feels like it's been a while since I listened to Shadoe... and I feel this early 90's period has a lot of lost hits you never hear anymore. However, there are songs like "Enter Sandman", "Right Here Right Now", "Emotions", "Hole Hearted", "Learning To Fly", "Something To Talk About", "Shiny Happy People", "The Motown Song", "Now That We Found Love", "Good Vibrations", "Crazy", "Summertime" (especially at this time of year!), "Motownphilly", "Wind of Change", "It Ain't Over Til It's Over", "Fading Like A Flower" and "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" that still get played fairly regularly to this day. I feel that 1991 was generally more obscure in the spring as we got some more classic songs in the summer.
Despite the obscurity of a lot of songs, there were relatively few one hit wonders on this chart. Two of them - Jomanda and 3rd Bass - never made the R&R chart. The other did make the top 10 - Corina. And while Heavy D had other hits making the top 40 on Billboard, "Now That We Found Love" was their only making R&R. I'm not sure if "Is It Good To You" made AT40 in 1992 after the chart change though.
Interestingly enough, 3 of the droppers this week also fell off the corresponding R&R chart. The other, "Hard To Handle", stayed another week on R&R.
There were a few two hit wonders though, including Jesus Jones, Extreme, The KLF and Natural Selection. I believe Rhythm Syndicate only made AT40 twice, though they did have two further CT40 hits in 1992. Same scenario with Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.
Shadoe counted down the 3 songs that charted over the longest span of time in various versions, where "Unforgettable" was the longest spanning at nearly 40 years since Nat King Cole's original version - he then joined daughter Natalie on the version on this chart. And I had no idea Seal was said to sound like Peter Gabriel! Also enjoyed Shadoe's run down of the top Yogi Berra quotes leading into the Lenny Kravitz song inspired by the top quote from him - it ain't over 'til it's over!
And of course, Bryan Adams was breaking records with his run at #1... and unsurprisingly got the #1 song of the entire year. Some last gasps for 80's acts here as 38 Special, Robbie Nevil, the Escape Club, and Natalie Cole had their last top 40 entries on here. I don't think the Scorpions with "Send Me An Angel" or DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince with "Boom! Shake The Room" made AT40 though both made CT40. Similarly, I don't think Metallica made AT40 with "Nothing Else Matters"... it did make CT40 though.
Overall, I think August was my favourite month of 1991 musically.

After a couple days listening to shows from this week in 2000 and 1984, I'm now listening to Casey's Top 40 from August 19, 1989.
The reason being the recent death of Great White lead singer Jack Russell; their biggest hit "Once Bitten Twice Shy" was in the top 10 that week. They join Warrant in the club of hair bands in that countdown whose lead singer died but have continued with a new lead singer. Skid Row, who had "18 and Life" in the countdown, have continued with various lead singers; however, their original guy, Sebastian Bach, is still alive and has continued to record as a solo artist.
Interesting story about how Madonna quite literally had a "rags to riches" story when she moved to NYC and was so poor she was eating out of garbage cans... quite the change from how famous she would end up being!
I like seeing the random comebacks on 1989 show and this one has the Bee Gees (with their last top 10) and Donny Osmond (narrowly missing the top 10 with the follow-up to his previous single, which ended up his last top 10.) Not to mention, who can even remember that Katrina & the Waves had another hit four years after their initial success? And even later in the 90's, they'd go on and win Eurovision for the UK (as two of their members were British...)
Not much from one hit wonders this week, but we do have Grayson Hugh and Love & Rockets. (The Jeff Healey Band did have a minor hit in 1993 on CT40.)
Pop radio was still hesitant to play pure rap at this point, while more songs did make it into Billboard's list (and got played by Shadoe on AT40), we do however have an LL Cool J song on this show.
And of course, #1 would end up becoming one of their most played dedication songs ever - "Right Here Waiting". "If I Could Turn Back Time" would also be used several times.
LOL at Casey saying that Milli Vanilli were a French and German duo singing in English. Of course, we now know that they didn't actually sing, though their surviving member, Fab Morvan, has re-recorded several of their songs with his own voice. He definitely sounds VERY different from the singers used on their recordings.
Such a sad LDD though... the writer had an argument where she told her father to "drop dead", which, sadly, he did after having a heart attack. Appropriately enough, "The Living Years" was the song choice.
And interesting to note that Casey said Paula Abdul was going to choreograph Meryl Streep in the upcoming film version of "Evita" - in the end, that role went to Madonna.

Freakyflybry has the previous 2 posts here. Said in the second one that pop radio was reluctant to play rap in 1989. Got less reluctant in the early to mid 90s before getting more reluctant again. On this 8/31/96 CT40, there's only 1 and it's "Tha Crossroads". Mistake by Casey when he said the #1 song 10 years ago was "Papa don't Preach". No as on AT40 and that is this week's 80s show, it's "Higher Love". Said that John Mellancamp resides in Bloomington, IN. Didn't mention that it's up the road from Seymour where he was raised. Know that because I went through both towns on I-65 about a month ago. Because of a tough R&D story about 2 gals telling about their 17 year old sister dying(no cause given) with "One Sweet Day" played, it's another situation with 3 consecutive single releases being on a show. "Always be my Baby" and "Forever" are the other 2.

Speaking of Mariah, she lost her mother and sister on the same day over the weekend.

That's tragic. Whether either was expected or not, it has to be a challenging time for Mariah. At least her mother and sister are together. Thanks for the update.
I stand corrected on the number of rap hits on this show. Fugees' "Killing Me Softly" makes it 2.
"Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" makes me say that over the weekend riding the Great Allegheny Passage, I not only saw a broken phone booth but also saw a working phone booth in southwest PA. Been years since I saw one!

Last week I heard the 8/31/96 CT40 which was 10 years after that weeks 80s show. This week I am doing the same thing and with the 70s show being 9/7/74, I am also hearing the show from 20 years after that one. So it's the 9/3/94 CT40 as I start a week with shows from 30, 40 and 50 years ago. Madonna who kicks off the 80s show, Elton and Prince are the only artists in both the 80s and 90s shows. Casey tells a Madonna story in the CT40. Like Stevie Wonder calling Ray Parker Jr with Ray not believing it was really Stevie, Madge called an LA TV station wanting to be the anchor for one night on their 6:00 news. The news director hung up on her thinking it was a prank! Did not realize the remix of "December 1963" was done in 1990. So that's a 4 year old remix of an 18 year old song. These shows from 10 years apart also have similarly titled songs..."The Lucky Ones" by Laura Branigan and "Lucky One" by Amy Grant. Ok, just for kicks, there are at least 2 artists who qualify for the algebra like category that is in the previous post. Aerosmith had their 10th hit peak at 10 with "What it Takes". Mariah will do it with her 27th chart hit but only her 26th top 40 hit since it followed up her first non top 40 hit, peaking at 27 with "Through the Rain".

Steering in a different direction at home, as I am now going to enjoy some country music with Bob Kingsley at the helm, counting down the week's top hits from 9/7/1996 on American Country Countdown. It would be later in the fall that I caught ACC on a station in the Poconos as my aunt and I were heading to church one Sunday morning. Not sure which station it was, so I'll have to listen up for any station mentions for that area. I'd catch ACC at times through early 1997, and again late in 1997 through much of 1999 at various times whenever my aunt, or co-workers had it on.
Such a perfect late summer day here, with plenty of sun and highs in the low 80s.

Tim McGraw have any hits then? Heard a commercial by a country star who got backup vocals on my fave song by her from Tim. That's Jo Dee Messina and "Bring on the Rain". Which was probably on the ACC show on the date of the AT40 I am listening to...9/8/01. Ed McMann is guest hosting and one of the highlights of the show is his tribute to Aaliyah. Said that she was recording and having many R&B hits between age 15 and 19. Then she turned to acting and mentioned the movies she acted in. Shamefully I did not know about her acting career. Then quoted Monica who said "As with many of her records. Aaliyah was well liked. Everyone will miss her." Then he played "Try Again". Definitely one of the top artists who died before his or her career peak.
Story about how Incubus turned from surfing to golf in their suburban Los Angeles community. Driving and chipping as he said. "Drive" is not about golf but about not living your life in fear. Good message in a great song.
Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson both have hits in this show. Their voices could easily be confused. Destiny's Child are in the countdown for the 82nd week in a row. "Say My Mine" that started the streak is my fave of the 5 songs involved in it.
3 straight songs by a Nelly with Nelly Furtado followed by a pair of Nelly hits.
