We've known each other since we were nine or ten Together we've climbed hills and trees Learned of love and ABCs
Okay so who learns their ABCs after the age of eight? Maybe now, but this was 50 years ago.
Unless the reference is to the Frankie Lymon song, The ABCs of Love. That's possible, I guess.

We have made it to page 300 on this thread that started nearly 10 years ago in February 2014! I was preoccupied when I started what I thought was the 11/25/89 AT40 but it is the 12/2/89 show that I am hearing. Just as well, got to hear another montage of hits that the Shadoe shows were notorious for and one of my fave montages at that. New Kids were covering "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" so Shadoe said the Delfonics original was an example of the Philadelphia sound that Thom Bell was responsible for in the late 60s and early 70s along with Gamble and Huff. Started with the last top 10 that he produced, "Mama Can't Buy You Love" followed by 3 hits by the Stylistics, a couple by the Spinners including "Then Came You" with Dionne Warwick and the Delfonics 2 top 10 hits(the first is "La La Means I Love You"). Joe Cocker debuted with "When the Night Comes" and Shadoe said that he had just come back from playing an impromptu concert at the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. Did not know that! Proving my statement above that the Shadoe shows featured a lot of medleys/montages, they played a medley of all the notable versions of "In the Mood" since it was part of the "Swing the Mood" medley at #26. One of those came from the Larry Elgart "Hooked on Swing" hit from 1982 as did another one from a UK medley hit that same year. Another was the only vocal version of "In the Mood" sung by Bette Midler in 1974. There is a thread devoted to white artists that sounded like they were black. Did not dig through the threads to find it to see if Kevin Paige was listed but Shadoe asked that question after saying that he had grown up listening to mostly R&B acts and had been the only white person in the bands that he played in. Kevin's answer was yes. freakyflybry commented in his post about the 11/11/89 CT40 that there were 2 artists from Belgium in the countdown. In this show, Shadoe lists and plays a clip of all the Belgian artist who have hit the top 40. The first was the Singing Nun who had that #1 hit "Dominique", then an instrumental from a couple years later followed by another instrumental though it does have some vocals and what wonderful vocals they are in "Jungle Fever"! That brings us to the current hit that is the 4th hit by an artist from Belgium, Technotronic. In the CT40 show referenced above, there were 2 artists from Belgium and the other was Soulsister. On the Hot 100, their song stopped at #41. So there is not a 5th Belgian artist making the top 40 according to AT40. Flashback was from 1972 and at #5 was another example of the Gamble and Huff Philly sound, "If You Don't Know Me by Now".

AT40 from November 27, 1976. This hasn't aired on Premiere since 2018 so I'm kinda hoping it'll be next week's 70's pick!

11/18/00 AT40 starts with 6 of the first 7 songs being by artists I hear a lot on the local R&B/hip hop throwback station. Though only "EI" by Nelly, "Big Pimpin" by Jay-Z and "Shake it Fast" by Mystikal are played on it. Did not know the other 3 which were "Stan" by Eminem which had Dido's "Thank You: interspersed in it. Great message song there about how another man had treated his gal. And "Pop Ya Collar" by Super Bowl 58 halftime performer Usher and "Pass You By" by Boyz II Men. Fave of all those songs is "EI". Highest debut was by Britney Spears who Casey said was about to move into her $3 million mansion. That was at #29 with Casey mentioning the droppers afterward. One of those was "Bent" making this the first week in 2000 that neither the #1 song of the year "Everything You Want" nor the #2 "Bent" were in the countdown. Has to be the latest in a year that the first show without the #1 or #2 hits of the year occurred.

Love Britney's hit (and Mikaila's) also. Might have to listen to that show soon!

Either you glanced at the chart for this show or you are very familiar with Makaila to know that she was in this show seeing as I did not mention her. In fact she and Britney are back to back. Yes late 2000 is a good time for AT40. Here are my faves besides "E.I."...."Big Pimpin", "Stan", the songs by the aforementioned gals, "The Itch", 'It Wasn't Me", "Who Let the Dogs Out", "It's My Life", "No More", "He Loves U Not", "If You're Gone", "Don't Think I'm Not", "Jumpin, "Dance With Me", "Independent Women" and I am not into the top 10 yet. And in that top 10 is my fave song in this show..."Faded".."At the end of the night when you make up your mind, you'll be coming home with me'. Casey makes a mistake when he says that the first hit for Vertical Horizon is "You're a God". I listed their first hit earlier "Everything You Want" which is a great song too.

I knew (and remembered) Mikaila was in that show. 🙂 I remember things from originally listening to the shows back then. Can't believe that was almost half my life ago! Lots of gems in that show, and what a year it was for Vertical Horizon. "Everything You Want" was my #1 song of 2000, also. "It Wasn't Me" is another favorite. That may be my all-time fave of Shaggy's. The girlfriend doesn't like it at all, though she loves his next hit, "Angel". She is from Baltimore, where Ruff Endz is from (they have "No More"). I still have the CD single of that song. Just can't say enough good and fun things about that show.
I'm in late May currently of my CT40 marathon between 1995-1996. Dionne Farris just got dethroned from the top in 1995. Loaded the shows on a thumb drive, and been playing them on a portable speaker at work. In the car, just started 4/16/1983 today (Bob Eubanks hosting). I've been doing the same thing, alternating 1983-1984 in order.

I am in late May too and I had already decided before I read your post. I knew that Ruff Endz was from Baltimore courtesy of Casey who then told a story of how the Star Spangled Banner* came to be from a War of 1812 battle at Fort Henry there. It is the 5/19/90 AT40 so Shadoe is the host. Got another entry in the Best Two Version thread if you include the Shadoe shows. It's "Always and Forever" that Heatwave originally did in 1978. Whistle* covers it and they are a precursor to Boyz II Men with their vocal group style singing a la "On Bended Knee". If there was an AC show in 1988 and I was listening to a show from this time of that year, I would hear from my fave song by Basia. That's "New Day for You". She must have seen what an impression that made probably especially in Europe where she is from to record a sound alike song on her next album. That's "Cruising For Bruising" in this show. After recently answering a question about the solo man and woman who had the most top 40 hits without hitting the top 10...Ronnie Dove with 11 and Etta James with 9, Shadoe answers a question about the group with that distinction. It is a tie between the Four Coins from the 50s and Foghat who both had 5 top 40 hits. Interesting that the former's biggest hit reached #21 and the latter's biggest reached #20("Slow Ride"). I thought that Salt 'N Pepa had that record before they hit the top 10 in 1994 with "Shoop". But they only had 4 top 40 hits prior to that. Might have to dig that show up to see what I was thinking of. One of those 4 top 40 hits is in this show, "Expression".
*There are a record 18 newcomers in the countdown according to Shadoe.
*Fancy that! This is the second show in a row for me with a story involving our national anthem. Shadoe explained the full title of Janet's album Rhythm Nation 1814. She wanted this album to be the national anthem of the 90s. Then just for kicks she found out that the national anthem was written in 1814, something that I found out less than 24 hours ago when Casey said that in the 2000 show. So that is why '1814' is part of the album title. Did not know that!
The story about the #1 song is that Madonna has broken a tie with Whitney for the most #1 hits by solo women. Released the same week as this show is the first hit by the solo woman who will take that record away from her. Talking about "Vision of Love" by Mariah. (Though Whitney will get it back before Mariah does that).

Going back a year from that 1990 show to the 5/20/89 AT40. Shadoe answered a question that IIRC was dealt with by Casey and is a topic of a thread here, game show hosts hitting the top 40. None have hit the top 40 while they were game show hosts but 8 have hit the top 40 either before or afterward. Notables artists include Bill Anderson, Chuck Willery and 2 hosts of Win, Lose or Draw, Vicki Lawrence and Burt Convey. Played clips of a lot of these artists hits including of course the biggest, "The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia". I thought Dirty Dancing was only filmed in Lake Lure, NC, a place I have been to. But in a story about Cynthia Rhodes who starred in that film, Shadoe says how Mountain Lake, VA that it was also filmed in was still capitalizing on the popularity of that movie with Patrick Swayze look alike contests among other things. She is in Animotion. Her husband Richard Marx has the biggest mover with "Satisfied", 32-22. Shadoe makes a slight mistake when he says that Roxette was the third Swedish* artist to hit #1 with all them doing so in the first week of April. The others were Blue Swede and Abba. The mistake is that Abba and Roxette both hit #1 in the second week of April (4/9/77 and 4/8/89). I guess the proper way to phrase it is the first week when the most of the days in the week are in April (Blue Swede hit the top on 4/6/74). Donna Summer has the highest debut at 28 with "This Time I Know it's for Real" with Shadoe saying that it was written by European hitmen Stock, Aiken and Waterman(wrote Rick Astleys big hits). With this being Summer's last hit, it gives her a European bookend to her career as her first hit was recorded in West Germany("Love to Love You Baby"). A couple lines in "Funky Cold Medina" of note. Btw how does Tone Loc have 2 great hits and then be never heard from again? 'This is the 80s and you know we get down with the ladies' and 'not so fast'. It was another 5 years or so before I started using the latter phrase in my conversation IIRC. Styx had a hit at the start of the decade called "Borrowed Time" that missed the top 40 with the line 'Don't look now but here come the 80s'.
*Fave song in the show by a Swedish artist is "Buffalo Stance".
Shadoe says before playing "Wind Beneath My Wings" that it was Bette Midler's biggest hit since "The Rose" in 1980. Rose was the LDD earlier in the show.
Second show I have heard this week with a song that is or could be titled "Real Love" is at #2 where both will peak; jinxing Shadoe's comment that Jody Watley would like to step up one more notch next week to reach #1. The other song I am referring to is Pink's "Most Girls" which has the line 'real love' sung a lot more then 'most girls'.

Back to shows from this time of the year, the CT40 from 11/18/95. This a one debut show and Casey gives away what that song is when he says Mariah has teamed up with Boyz II men on it. So it's "One Sweet Day" and that may make this the one debut CT40 or AT40 with the biggest hit as its one debut. It's also the last week for MJ's "You Are Not Alone". "Fantasy" was #1 last week and "Exhale(Shoop Shoop)" had Casey saying that Whitney was hoping that it would be her 12th #1 hit. Not to be but it did hit #1 on the Hot 100. The 4 hits that I listed are the first 4 songs to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. This is the only show with all 4 hits in the show. (4 #1 debuts in 3 months but not another until mid 1997.) Heard a great song that I was not familiar with..."A Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins. Sounds out of place in 1995. Straight ahead rocker that only reached #31 in the alternative leaning mid 90s. Speaking of which, Casey mentioned that Dave Matthews hosted Alternative Nation on MTV. First R&D was a song I heard on the 1989 show earlier and a great one at that, "Miss You Like Crazy". Great story about "You Oughta Know". It is a real life experience for Alanis Morrisette. She had broken up with her boyfriend and after a lot of heartache, finally called him a year after the breakup. But as soon as she heard his voice, all of her insecurities came back to her. She had not dealt with the situation at all in that year. So she wrote everything down on 3 pages of her diary. And then several months later, wrote this song. Her rage is certainly evident. Has back to back songs as "Hand in My Pocket" is next in the countdown.

Another show from today's date but it is not close to Thanksgiving, the CT40 in 1991 when turkey day was on the 28th. Starts with a nearly 5 minute version of "Enter Sandman". Funny how even though CT40 was more notorious for editing songs than AT40, it was the latter that almost always edited Sandman but CT40 never did. Glad I don't have to go to YouTube to hear this great song! So here we are at the point when AT40 is about to ditch the Hot 100 in favor of various charts. I have as a bookmark 'the realamericantop40' which uses the AT40 chart as its top 40 from 1970 through January 1995 and then switches to CT40 at that point. But I seem to remember a similar top 40 chart site that made the switch from AT40 to CT40 at this time when AT40 ditched the Hot 100. I would do it that way myself. Lots of good to great songs never saw the light of day on AT40 but did on CT40 such as "Smells Like Teen Spirit". There are 4 such songs in this show, "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue with Casey saying that it was originally released in 1985(how did it miss the top 40 then when it was a huge hit on MTV?), "Save Up All Your Tears" by Cher, "Shot of Poison" by Lita Ford and "Groovy Train" by the Farm(all reached at least #24 showing just how ridiculous it is that they never made the AT40 chart). Casey mentioned that Natural Selection was from the land of the Twins who had just won the World Series(Minnesota). "Do Anything" is a great song with that repartee between the duo and that gal who Casey identified as Madonna's backup singer, Nicki Harris. Did not know that! First R&D was "Waiting For a Girl Like You" that Casey said was #1 10 years ago. Of course it was on the R&R chart so no mistake there. Highest debut was "Black or White" with Casey saying that it was the first single from his Dangerous CD and that his last 2 albums Thriller and Bad each had 7 top 40 hits. No jinx there. He got 7 hits from this one too. Chuckled when Casey talked about the top of the world in connection with Van Halen's hit with that title. The top of the world is the North pole where temperatures are -100 degrees in the winter. Then leading into the song, he said Van Halen was singing about the warm feeling of being in love. Ha! Not really Casey...lol This is from their album titled For Unlawuful Carnal Knowledge. The first letters of those words spell it out! Fave song on that CD is "Pound Cake". Fave song in this show follows and it's "Something Got Me Started". Great sax solo and great vocals....'I'm giving it all up for you; Yes I would..Yes I would...' Holding at #21 however. That's pathetic!

CT40 from today's date in 1994. Kind of a meh show with no stories worth writing about and a lot of average songs. So far the only item of note is Casey saying that Janet leads Michael Bolton, Madonna and Mariah 14-13 for most top 40 hits in the 90s. Bolton will be done hitting the top 40 in less than a year leaving those 3 divas to battle it out. Madonna will win the battle with 24 top 40 hits, one more than Mariah and three more than Janet. Madonna has one of the few songs that are not average, "Secret". IMO of course. They skipped the acoustic beginning to "I'm the Only One" with the first electric guitar chord opening the song. Casey is not explicit when he says that Real McCoy becomes the third duo to hit #1 in the 90s. I figured it out after a few minutes. What he should have said is that they were the third established duo to hit the top after Roxette and PM Dawn. Because 4 one off duos had also hit #1 in the 90s.

Last show from this month for me is the CT40 from 11/30/96. Kind of appropriate since Casey tells a story about Bryan Adams recording his latest album in San Tropez the previous winter. This is the place known for its San Tropez tan as Casey said and Bryan was looking forward to spending a lot of time in the sun. But that winter was a cold one with many records set in Europe. He hardly ever saw the sun as it rained and even snowed while he was there. So he spent most of the time inside his rented house in front of the fireplace. A lot of us are experiencing our first blast of winter right now. "I Believe I Can Fly" is from Space Jam starring Michael Jordan. R. Kelly was his first choice to write a song for the movie. Casey does not say that but it's probably because Kelly is a Chicagoan. Casey listed MJ's many accomplishments with the Chicago Bulls. Wow! REM just signed a record deal worth $80 million according to Casey. Maybe that paid off because there is a lot more to it than hit singles....album sales, concert tours, memorabilia. But after "Bittersweet Me" which was their first hit to miss the top 20 after their first 10 did, they barely scraped the 40 one more time and that was it. Fine Young Cannibals had their 3 hits in 1989 and then went into the studio to record their next album in 1991. But after a few months, they called it off because of all the tension within the band. They never got back together to finish the CD. A greatest hits CD had just been released that included 3 songs from those sessions. None were hits and that includes the Hot 100 with nothing charted there either. What a massive hit "Don't Speak" was. If there was a hit that caused the Hot 100 the change their policy regarding only single releases being eligible to chart, that may be the one that did it.

No Doubt who had 2 hits in that last show, have a hit* in the next show for me which is 5 years and 1 day later, the AT40 from 12/1/01. Ed McMann is guest hosting and Jewel is another artist with songs in both shows. They will probably be the only artists with songs in both shows as there was lot of turnover between 1996 and 2001 pop musically speaking. 2 groups that are in this show are Creed and Nickleback. I read an interesting comment in a story about college football recently. They were comparing 2 teams and wrote...This is like saying Creed beat Nickleback in a battle of the bands competition. They are essentially the same band, flawed in essentially the same way. Heard "My Sacrifice" which is not flawed IMO. Ed mentioned how Ebony magazine had gotten various artists opinion of the best love songs. Some of the answers were "I Will Always Love You", "Always and Forever" and "I Want You". That Marvin Gaye hit is a great one which T Boz of TLC had named. This was leading into Ginuwine whose fave is "Diamond and Pearls". My fave by Prince is "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. And "Differences" while not a love song is a great song too.
*"Hey Baby", a great song.
Did not realize there were back to back top 10 hits by gals named Alicia. First was Alicia Keys' "Fallin" and the second was Alicia Moore's "Get the Party Started". That's Pink. All of the other chart #1 hits and the artist with the #1 song a year ago which Ed also mentioned in the top 10 are in the top 16. He also mentioned the #1 song from 30 years ago as the "Theme from Shaft" earlier in the show. It will get displaced the next week by "Family Affair". And that is the title of this week's new #1 hit. Casey will mention in the next show how the title of the current #1 hit was the same as the #1 hit 30 years earlier. That is very likely the only time that same titled #1 hits occupied the top spot exactly 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years apart.

Looking forward to the early 2000s, but I have a ways to go...if I want to keep the shows in order, that is. Got Casey's Top 40 on this morning from 6/8/1996. Probably will get into the top 10 before I have to kill it. Toni Braxton's debut, "You're Makin' Me High" was edited. Wasn't exactly uncommon during this timeframe, as average top 40 song length was right around its peak.
