It's AT40 from 9/17/1988. We've heard many baseball references from Casey over the years, and now Shadoe throws one in right before #39. To quote: "Shadoe Stevens on American Top 40. We're in the first inning of Billboard's chart game of the week, waiting for the grand slam, #1."Will go back and read Mike's analysis of this show...I really enjoyed those. You won't find it. I didn't have, and still don't have, 9/17. After 9/10, the next one I was able to do wasn't till 10/8. I couldn't quite remember which ones you did; I remember you had done many 1988 shows. I found 9/10. Anyway, they were all fun to read.

Features classic artists like Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson, Chicago and Elton John, along with then newcomers Escape Club, Erasure and Breathe. Shadoe had a way with words. I always wondered if he ad-libbed, wrote that stuff himself, or if someone wrote it for him. Like "how many licks does it take to get to a Tootsie Roll Pop" we may never know.... Agree on missing Mike's analyses....

Played a couple of classic AT40s for my co-workers today, 9/17/1983 and 9/20/1986 (this weekend's show). Several got a kick out of hearing the original network ads, especially the 1983 show, with the "gum wars" (Trident and Chewels). 😂

AT40 from 9/27/1980 with Lon Thomas filling in for Casey. Must be remastered; audio sounds very clean. Lots of great songs in this show.

In memory of Helen Reddy and Mac Davis, AT40 from October 14, 1972 - the week "I Am Woman" debuted, and "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me" was in the top 10.
There was a question letter about the sibling act with the most #1's so far - the Everly Brothers and Jackson 5 led at this time. Little did anyone know that a trio who had only hit #1 to date once - with "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" - would surpass them all by the end of the decade. By now you can tell I'm talking about the phenomenal Bee Gees - and yes, I wrote that part imagining Casey saying that as he would by the time the disco era was in full swing.

Been listening to all the AT40s from October 1980 and CT40s from October 1992 throughout this month, currently on 10/31/1992. (Haven't heard the AT40 equivalent yet with Jay Thomas.) On deck, AT40 from 11/1/1980.
Feeling a renewed interest to listen to 1985 also. (Which is the only year in AT40's history to feature all 52 weeks of regular shows, from 1/5 to 12/28 - no specials or year-enders.)
ETA: Leading into #24, which is by D**n Yankees, Casey talks about Ted Nugent not being slowed down from his guitar solo in a studio on the day of the SF earthquake, 10/17/1989. (I know that was recently brought up on this board in regard to Martika's hit, "I Feel The Earth Move".)

And interesting because it was the 15 Anniversary of AT40 with no special in July.

This morning at work, I played AT40 from 10/25/2003 for my colleagues. Many of the songs on there would also be heard in Seacrest's first show on 1/10/2004.

Funny story from my childhood. I'd heard the AT40 1983 and 1984 year-enders on my local station but had stopped listening to the show by late summer 1985 (long, stupid story). However, I wanted to hear the year-end show, so I tuned in the weekend of 12/28 and there was nothing. I wouldn't learn until many years later that the top 100 special was a week late that year.

I just joined a 1982 countdown on IHeart in progress, and Casey went into a break teasing a story about someone who had played "Grandpa" on TV. So I'm thinking - hmmmmm I never knew Casey mentioned Al Lewis on a countdown! ummm turns out it was Walter Brennan. lol Now I'm picturing Old Rivers and his mule being followed by a bat.

Just into the top 20 of CT40 from 11/14/1992, guest-hosted by Mark Elliott.
Well, Veteran's Day is upon us, and I'd like to thank all of those who have served, and are serving today. The freedoms we enjoy aren't possible without the sacrifices they have made.
Speaking of 11/11, we all know what else happened that day. I recently listened to the AT40 from 11/8/1980, in which Casey re-told the story of Gordon Lightfoot's hit, "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald". That story would be repeated on the 11/9/1985 show, but also with a footnote...the three November 11ths in which the ships all sank into Lake Superior in 1913, 1930, and 1975...all fell on a Tuesday. (With this year being a leap year, Tuesday got skipped this time around so 11/11 will fall on a Wednesday.)

Listening to 10/29/88 -- haven't listened to a Shadoe show in a while. I have to admit he has grown on me over the years -- I have listened to almost every Casey-hosted AT40 from the 1970-88 run as well as several Casey's Top 40s. Shadoe was hard to get used to at the time because there were some stark differences in his delivery compared to Casey's, but no doubt he was underappreciated for his talent as a DJ and AT40 host.
