I'm kind of doing a 30 for 30 this week-going back to AT40 from 6-16-90. Lots of good, not bad, and ugly. Some songs on here I can go another 30 years without hearing again ie "Turtle Power", "Love Is" to name a couple. I really enjoy songs from that show such as "Dare To Fall In Love" by Brent Bourgeois, "Baby It's Tonight" by Jude Cole, "I'll See You In My Dreams" by Giant, "The Ballad Of Jane" by L.A. Guns, and the headbanger of the bunch "Up All Night" by Slaughter. Probably the most significant thing about this chart was the debut of Mariah Carey's first Top 40 hit "Vision Of Love". We also had two "Hold On"s by Wilson Phillips and En Vogue.

^ Great show. Will have to listen to that one. Many forgotten gems, IMO.
Right now, Casey's Hot 20 from 6/8/1996. Haven't listened to many 1996 shows since they originally aired.

AT40 from September 11, 1999.
Casey gave an update on the Spin Doctors; at the time, their lead singer had lost his voice and was feared he could never sing again. Thankfully, he recovered.
As a stretch story, Casey told the history of area codes to lead into 702's song "Where My Girls At"; 702 being the area code for Las Vegas.
Also, one of my favourites of the year - "Genie In A Bottle" by Christina Aguilera - hit #1 that week, her first. And debuts from the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears would continue their hit streaks in what was a great year for teen pop.

Yesterday, I listened to the original first show from the July 4th week end, 1970(in mono, of course); it will be interesting to see what changes are made for the 50th anniversary (besides being in stereo).

Listening to 5/14/83 -- so full of great songs. Funny to think about how little we knew at the time that '83 was so good...

The last show to exhaust the Premiere 80s series, 6/14/1980. It was also the final show to feature 3 archive songs from the 70s. There was only one left, which was played the following week, guest-hosted by Dave Roberts.

Now listening to Dave Roberts hosting the 6/21/1980 show, late in hour 3. This show wrapped up the 70s #1 Archives feature; Dave mentions that Casey will "dig deeper" into the archives next week (which is Premiere's "A" show), and head back through the 60s. Will be hearing that show in the next few days.
On deck: CT40 from 6/27/1992.

AT40 from June 20, 1998.
Early on in the show, two "Stop" songs were back to back - from the Spice Girls and Meredith Brooks.

Leading into AT40's 50th anniversary, I have a lot of upcoming morning shifts, which allows me to get in some time for shows before doors open. I've loaded all the July shows on my iPod from 1970-1977, and I'm listening to them in calendar date order. So up first, the perfect show to lead it all off...7/1/1972. It's the top 40 hits of the rock era so far. Then following in calendar date order is 1977, 1971, 1976, 1970, 1975, 1974, and 1973. Yes, 1970 and 1975 are the same show...with 1975 featuring additional Casey commentary.

Listening to the Top 40 of the '90s show on WPNC, and I cannot figure out how SWV's "Weak" is the only song by a trio in the countdown. There is no way that that song performed better than "Waterfalls," "Unpretty" or "No Scrubs" by TLC. What chart was AT40 using at that time?

There is no way that that song performed better than "Waterfalls," "Unpretty" or "No Scrubs" by TLC. What chart was AT40 using at that time? AT40 when it returned in 1998 used the Radio & Records' CHR/Pop chart. For the show's history, they only referenced that chart (and the Hot 100 for the period when R&R did not exist). Thus, "Weak" spent 4 weeks at #1, while the TLC songs never reached #1.

^ Yeah. Oddly enough, the reverse happened on actually-counted-down AT40s - TLC actually reached the top with "Baby Baby Baby" (Top 40 Radio Monitor was the only Pop chart where that reached #1), while "Weak" was forced to settle for #2 on Top 40 Mainstream. (I think that hit #1 on the Hot 100 and R&R, but neither of the two BB airplay charts.)

Anyways...May 5, 2001 is up on WPNC. Casey may have pronounced that "Florida rules" with this week's first four debuts all hailing from that state, but the actual results would be a specifically mixed bag, as those four songs would each go on to peak in one region of the countdown. (#22, #34, #14, #1, in that order.) Jagged Edge may have gotten a story in their debut week in the countdown, but "Promise" would proceed to go 36-40-off. It'd be better luck next time for those guys. (In R&R proper, "Promise" also only reached #47.) Hmmm, wasn't expecting to also get the America's Top Hits - but then, if Premiere can use optional extras to fill time, why not use the ATHs here, I guess? "All I Have to Give" is a VERY odd choice, though, as...yup, that actually fell off on 5/8/99. Attack of the original AT40 statistics in Second Era AT40 again! Casey gives #1 20 years ago this week as "Morning Train". True for the Hot 100, not for R&R (#3). I...think? This became something of a habit in 2001. I may or may not have mentioned this before, but it was a surprise to hear "Hippychick" when I first heard the 12/8/1990 show sometime in 2012. That has the same sample as "Southside" in this countdown, and of course I was long familiar with Moby's song well before then. Can anyone think of another show where two songs by the same act are separate LDDs? Boyz II Men do that here - "A Song For Mama" was the first LDD, and "One Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey is the third. Anyone know when the America's Top Hits were structured the one-per-hour way? They're laid out here, just like Premiere extras are now; the last just played with only the Top 2 to go. I know during 1998, there were five of those...
