I'm one of the few that enjoys 1981, all the way throughout. I'd say the spring and summertime had the best hits from that year overall, but I like a wide variety of music. Lots of good stuff from that year.

I know on this board 1981 is luvv or hate, but this show is amazing. Elt, Photoglo, a discoy Clapton, Say What? The entire first hour and a half is like a lost hits of the 80s CD. Probably not more than 8-10 of the 40 get regular airplay today. For sure -- 1981 was hitting its stride by the end of May, and this show is certainly one of the better shows of that year. My favorite part of '81 is probably early-mid May through early October. The end of 1981 wasn't bad, but late spring through early fall had so many good songs -- both lost hits and classics. The run of songs from #34 to #24 is ridiculous (save for Air Supply -- that song is OK, but I'm just not a fan of their stuff). And Premiere throws in "In the Air Tonight" as an extra during that stretch to boot. Have to admit I'm a big fan of "Say What", "Winning", "Ay No Corrida", "Find Your Way Back" (best Mickey Thomas-led Jefferson Starship song IMHO), "You Make My Dreams", "Say You'll Be Mine", "I Missed Again", "This Little Girl", "How Bout Us", "Sweetheart", "Too Much Time On My Hands", and the odd but quirky "Medley". I also like "Bette Davis Eyes", though I wasn't into it back in the day.

OMG, lovin' these late Spring 1983 charts. It's an embarrassment of riches. Elt, Bee Gees, LRB, H&O, Chris Cross, MJ. Alabama, Rockin' Rod and Jim Capaldi, all in the first 90 minutes! One of the last, if not the last panel ever with this kinda variety. I agree with you 100% 1983 was pretty top heavy with great stuff that some of the songs that didn't hit the Top 40 were great too. I remember back in the 90's when I used to buy those Rhino Records compilations like Just Can't Get Enough : New Wave Hits Of The 80's. I think there were 15 volumes or so. A lot of that stuff I had only heard for the first time.

I don't necessarily agree with LVK's assessment of the '80 show but I dig his enthusiasm.

Just listened to 7/19/86, and it was again confirmed for me that this was one of my favorite two shows of 1986 (the other being 5/3/86) and one of my all time favorites. A great set of debut songs, while several hung on for a last week (not the least of which was Prince's "Mountains"). The only duds in the countdown were "On My Own" (can't stand that song, though I like just about everything else Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald did, solo or in a group) and "Glory of Love" (too much sap for me). This was maybe the last really great countdown of the 80's...there were other good ones during the rest of the decade, but none quite like this.

I know 1981 doesn't float everyone's boat, but this show is amazing! Maybe only 10-12 tunes still get overplayed today. Except for a Centerfold, everything >=30 is a lost gem. Chris Christian, Stevie Woods, Ronnie and Kenny, the Royal Philharmonic! There was a Survivor before Rocky?! I think it's interesting that we have 11-28-81 and 11-29-80 in consecutive weeks this year. It gives you an idea of how the music of the early 80's had it's slow progression. I would not say it was a drastic change from November 1980 to November 1981, but there was improvement in that time. I think that November 1982 to November 1983 was the biggest improvement in 80's music.

Although 11-23-74 was a little before my time, I absolutely loved that show. There was a lot of classic 70's soul music which I really like. A lot of that 70's soul music from 1970-1974 were some of the best records ever made IMO until Disco happened, and then Rap killed it off.

I would say that 12-15-84 is definitely filled with some greats and I would say 1984 ended about as well as it began musically. Kind of funny that the "S.O.B. was me" line was omitted from Toto's "Stranger In Town" I guess they did not have The Charlie Daniels Band luxury😊

I haven’t heard all of the shows with the Devil Went Down to Georgia in it, but the radio version/45rpm version was Son of a Gun, not SOB. I would assume this would be the version AT40 played. I know that’s the version they played on the Top 50 of 79.

The SOB version of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" was played in the original 8/18 and 9/8 shows. Not sure if Premiere edited the 8/18 show when it aired (9/8 was guest-hosted). I've been listening to all the 1979 shows in order this year, and those are the only two I've heard it in.

Maybe not every song, but how can you not like Commentary Casey? And by this point in 1988, Icehouse and Oates, Rick Springfield, Toto, George Harrison, and MJ, it was becoming safe to listen to radio again. All that freestyle crap and Madonna sound alike crap from 86 and 87 was beginning to fade.
If Kenny Rogers had a song on the countdown it might have been 1982. What a wonderful world!

I think if you have a show with massive debuts, and the majority of those are good, I think those are the best shows. I liked the Human League, the Tom Tom Club, and Junior. I didn't know "Mama Used To Say" existed until I heard it on an episode of Backtrax USA back in 1997.
