Do year end countdowns count? I like the last show of the 1970's from a music stand point (oh alright, there is a song or two I don't like--but...). What I really find interesting is the info the staff wrote for Casey and the way he delivered it; to me that is what made AT40 special. Since the year end specials represent the biggest hits of a certain year--to me there is a greater chance of 'liking' all the songs. Also, since I worked in radio for about 15 years (from 1979-1993); I knew how difficult it was (is) to produce a 'perfect' and entertaining show every week. To me, AT40 hit a home run (or scored a touchdown) nearly every week. I suppose that is why people still enjoy listening to the shows all these years later--plus it is like a little snapshot of what life (or at least a part of it) was like.

I enjoyed 90% of the songs that were in the top 40 on 3-3-1979. Unfortunately I didn't like 2 of the songs that were in the archives.

Just got done listening to 6/30/79...thought it might be the first show ever that didn't contain a song I disliked. Was looking good at the end of the 3rd hour--up to that point loaded with great songs and a few that were OK, but nothing I'd say I flat out didn't care for. The 4th hour started with the Bee Gee's "Love You Insight Out" at #11 - one of their more underrated songs IMHO. Then it happened...at #10, Rex Smith's "Take My Breath Away"...sung in Rex's over-the-top vibrato...the first blemish in an otherwise great show. Well, there was one other but it was one of the archives and not a countdown song--Paul Anka's awful "Having My Baby". Fortunately those two songs were the only ones. This show ranks as one of the top 3 of 1979 for me, and is as close to a show that I liked from beginning to end as there has been.

I wonder which weekly countdown of the 1970-1988 Casey Era had the most hits to make a year-end Top 100, either the preceding year, same year, or next year. It would probably be during a year that saw the fewest or close to fewest hits making the Top 40? So late 1980s then?

Basically ANY countdown from March to September 1983, by far and away my fave year of the 80's. I maybe in the minority here, but this week's 7-18-81 show could be one of them as far as early 80's shows are concerned. "It's Now Or Never" and "Double Dutch Bus" are pretty much the exceptions. The archives and the extras look good. My guilty pleasure is "Elvira" by The Oak Ridge Boys, even though that song makes a lot of you cringe! Don't forget the famous 40-"Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James. How "Double Dutch Bus" did better on the charts than "Give It To Me Baby" is beyond me!!!!

Yeah, I have to agree with your take on the 7/18/81 show...almost. There are a ton of great songs in this show, but just enough iffy ones to keep it from reaching elite status. Couldn't agree more about "It's Now Or Never"...that song is just horrible...would never have touched the top 40 if John Schneider weren't riding his Bo Duke fame at the time. As for "Double Dutch Bus", well that's one of the true classics of the rock era. Frankie Smith really deserved way more in the way of success than he got. And a travesty that this song didn't climb higher. I mean really, who else could pull off using his own version of pig latin in a song that became a top 40 hit?

The 7/30/1977 show came very close to being a perfect show. I didn't like Rita Coolidge version of "Higher and Higher" and I didn't care too much for "Telephone Man".

I agree with you on "Telephone Man"-that song was awful, but I like Rita's "Higher and Higher", even though I prefer her next cover tune "We're All Alone", originally done by Boz Scaggs. I kinda did a WTF on the Cat Stevens song, although the keyboards did sound like the AT40 end of show jingle from 1984-1987.

This week's 1978 show fits the bill for me.
I can't think of a single song on there I'd give a "No. Just no." to - I guess it's because a lot of the usual suspects, artists I don't like, are absent from the chart - and while I normally don't like a lot of Barry Manilow songs, I actually really like "Copacabana".
Novelty songs of the 70's are also usually hit or miss for me, but I like "King Tut".
Rather oddly, there isn't much disco on the chart - and a lot of my favourite songs of the late 70's are disco!

Can't believe I have not posted in this thread. Well I am posting now. The 8/2/75 show had 39 out of 40 songs for me. Charlie Rich's "Every Time You Touch Me I Get High" is the one that kept the entire show from being liked. This one is ok although not one that I dislike. So the proper designation might be 39-0-1. 39 winners, no losers and 1 tie.

I just heard 5/26/79 and 6/2/79 the past couple of weeks and liked every song but a couple. Talk about a variety - disco, country (Barbara Mandrell, Gold - John Stewart), hard rock/metal - Van Halen, Bad Company, Styx -That's about as close as it gets for me.

February 11, 1978 is another that I like all of the songs. Of course, it also helps that it was the week that "You Light Up My Life", one of my most despised 70's hits, fell out of the top 40.

This week's B show: March 23, 1985. There isn't a song I really dislike in the entire countdown. A couple songs where I go "eh" (Autograph and Journey) but I don't hate either song. I actually like the rest of the countdown.

I actually like the rest of the countdown. Just about any of the shows from March or April 1985 fit the bill for me. And I would have to say that "Turn Up the Radio" and "Only the Young" are right up there with my favorites of that time. Spring of 1985 was one of the best times of the rock era for me. My least favorite songs on the 3/23/85 show were "Why Can't I Have You" and "Can't Fight This Feeling", but even both of those are OK...

As I generally never liked the preemption of regular shows for special countdowns, I've never taken those shows into consideration.
With that in mind, I'll offer the Disco Special from July 7, 1979 as my choice for this topic. From 40 to 1, I can't skip a-one.
