Originally reaching #103 on the Bubbling Under chart in February 1981, Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" had a second chart lifetime in 1986, when a live version from the films Stop Making Sense and Down and Out in Beverly Hills debuted on the April 19 Hot 100 at #92, and reached #91 on the May 3 chart.

On the second season of American Idol in 2003, eventual winner Ruben Studdard performed a cover of Luther Vandross' version of the song "Superstar". This week in 1984, Vandross' medley "Superstar/Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" was at #90 on the Hot 100, peaking at #87 the following week.

Debuting at #89 on the May 2, 1981 Hot 100 was "Can You Feel It" by The Jacksons, but despite the ambitiousness of the music video in the days before MTV and Michael's own videos for Thriller and beyond, the song only reached #77.

It would eventually score a "72" out of a "Hot" 100, but on the May 6, 1989 chart, "The Mayor of Simpleton" by XTC had only gotten up to an "84".

Two years earlier, the band's "Dear God", despite some controversy (which usually juices sales and/or airplay), didn't make the 'Hot 100'. It did make the Album Rock Tracks chart. Good song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=p554R-Jq43A

Two years before their only Top 40 hit "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)", Romeo Void hit both the Dance/Disco Top 80 and the Top Tracks charts with "Never Say Never". It reached #27 on the rock chart in late 1982, and this week that year it was down to #49 on the dance chart after having peaked at #17.

Unlike their previous hits from D a m n the Torpedoes, "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl" did not hit the Top 40 for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. On the May 17, 1980 Hot 100, it was climbing to #61 and reached #59 the following week.

The only Hot 100 hit for Latin boy band Menudo was on the May 18, 1985 Hot 100 at #76; "Hold Me" would eventually reach #62. Oddly enough, a future lineup of the group reached the Top 40 on Mediabase in 2008 with the #37 hit "Lost", a song which failed to make the Hot 100 or Bubbling Under chart.

Down from #17 to #21 on the Album Rock Tracks chart for the week ending May 23, 1987, "Love Removal Machine" by The Cult previously peaked at #15 three weeks earlier.

Too "Fat" to climb the Hot 100, "Weird Al" Yankovic's parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" peaked at #99 during its debut on the May 21, 1988 chart, and slipped to #100 in its second and final week on May 28.

Here's a song from Terry Cashman of the group Cashman and West about "America's Pastime". "Talkin' Baseball (Willie, Mickey and The Duke)" was on the May 30, 1981 Adult Contemporary chart at #32, reaching #28 the following week.
The song would be revised by Cashman for use by individual major league baseball teams, as well as parodied by him on The Simpsons as "Talkin' Softball" in 1992.

^^ jlthorpe ... The customized version for the Cardinals was the only version ever played in St. Louis. It was played a lot throughout the '81 baseball season and even into '82... until the Cardinals took off in '82 and won the World Series. "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang replaced "Cardinal Baseball" as the team's unofficial tune at some point during '82. "Cardinal Baseball" is available on YouTube as are versions for the Orioles, Twins, Mets, Phillies and others. "Cardinal Baseball": www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ5AF7a7MJs
