^ Great pick, jlthorpe ! I have that CD; probably my favorite of the AVSC set (I own the first 3). I also noticed more songs from that first volume are played more often than any other. It was one of a kind back then. While the subsequent releases have been good, I feel they haven't quite matched the first release back in 1987. For the 1992 "A Very Special Christmas 2" CD, I think Tom Petty's "Christmas All Over Again" and the Frank Sinatra/Cyndi Lauper duet of "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" still get airplay on most all Christmas music sweep radio stations.

Looking at the track lists, there are one or two songs from the second album that I recognize (and none from the third), while there are seven or eight on the first, and at least half of those I feel have become pretty well-known (including the U2 song).

Here's a Christmas song that was one of the few (if not the only) songs on "A Very Special Christmas" that wasn't a cover, although it did sample some other established holiday songs. Here's Run-D.M.C. with "Christmas in Hollis".

With today being the first day of winter, here are the Eurythmics with their contribution to "A Very Special Christmas" - "Winter Wonderland".

Originally performed in 1953 by Eartha Kitt (who was not a fan of this version), "Santa Baby" would appear on "A Very Special Christmas" courtesy of Madonna.

Still known as John Cougar Mellencamp at the time of "A Very Special Christmas", John Mellencamp contributed a cover of the 1952 Jimmy Boyd hit "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus". Both the music video version and album version are posted.

"The Little Drummer Boy", probably best known through the 1958 rendition by the Harry Simeone Chorale, appeared on "A Very Special Christmas" in a version by Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but the Bob Seger song is not only my favorite version of Little Drummer Boy, but one of my favorite holiday songs overall.

I concur. 🙂 That whole CD is one of my favorite all-time Christmas albums. Just about every version on there is my favorite, no matter who's done it before or after.

The final song being featured from "A Very Special Christmas" was originally recorded in 1980 and initially released not on the "A Very Special Christmas" album, but as the B-side to this artist's 1986 single "War". With their cover of the Johnny Moore's Three Blazers classic (which Charles Brown sang lead on), here's Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with "Merry Christmas Baby".

Frankie Goes to Hollywood were at #48 on the Hot 100 (after having peaked at #43) this week in 1984 with their Cold War-era dance song "Two Tribes".

Even on the Hot 100, Rodney Dangerfield got no respect. This week in 1983, "Rappin' Rodney" was at #86 on the chart and only reached #83. The video features Don "Father Guido Sarducci" Novello, as well as a cameo by Pat Benatar.
