Considering he gets almost zilch oldies airplay today and not much more on the classic country format you'd never know he was as hot as a firecracker in 74-75. You'd never guess John Denver racked up 14 pop top 40s and countless more country hits.

Based upon how much airplay Carpenters get today, you'd never know that for the better part of a decade Karen & Richard trailed only Don & Phil as the #1 duo of all time.

18 songs in the Top 40 for Herman's Hermits including 9 in the Top 10 in less than 1 1/2 years.

One artist I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned is Kenny Rogers - 20 Top 40 hits from 1977-1984, 9 of which were Top 10, and the only song I think I heard on the radio was "Lady".
In fact, country (at least, the pop country from the late 70s/early 80s) barely got any airplay when I listened to radio in the 90s, which is amazing considering the country resurgence that happened in that decade. The only Dolly Parton song I think I heard was "9 to 5". Even her #1 duet with Kenny Rogers, "Islands in the Stream", I wasn't familiar with until after "Ghetto Supastar" came out, and I was surprised to find out it was sampled by that song. Other country acts that had pop hits, like Willie Nelson and Ronnie Milsap, I don't think ever got played back then.

I'd nominate KISS. Everyone knows about Beth. #8 in 1977. But they had a total of 9 top 40 hits including 2 top l0s. I always saw them as a concert and album act without much success on the singles chart.

I wonder how much pop chart success Dolly Parton, Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap, Eddie Rabbitt and Alabama would have had if Kenny Rogers hadn't gone country first. Would Urban Cowboy have been made? If so, would Travolta have been willing to do it? Would Dallas have been as big a hit? And would there have been more hard rock hits to fill the void if there had been a void? The Kenny Rogers Effect, maybe.

The Kenny Rogers Effect, maybe. Olivia Newton-John started out as pop in 1971 then went country circa 1973 and soft rock around 1978, also, add Juice Newton as a 1981 county crossover newbie!

They don't get a lot of air play now but I would say most people that grew up in the 70s would know that the Carpenters were a huge act

Donnie Iris had three top 40 hits ,Ah Leah ,Love Will Rock You and My Girl.I always thought Ah Leah was the biggest hit but My Girl actually charted higher..I usually listened to rock stations and Ah Leah was in heavy rotation while My Girl was not a rock song. Iris had 4 more songs make the rock charts He also had a hit The Rapper with the band The Jaggerz

Entertaining thread. Here's my initial contribution: the Red Rocker Sammy Hagar.
Everyone knows (and can loudly sing) the chorus from his most famous song "I Can't Drive 55" -- most folks don't realize that "55" is not his only Top 40 (solo) hit and also not his top performing single. Hagar's four Top 40 singles (sequentially) were: "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" (#13), "Two Sides of Love" (#38), "55" (#26), and "Give to Love" (#23). Notably, Hagar just missed with three other singles: "I'll Fall In Love Again" (#43), "Never Give Up" (#46), and "Winner Takes It All (Over the Top)" (#54 from the "Over the Top" soundtrack starring Sylvester Stallone).

The correct title for "Love Will Rock You" is "Love Is Like a Rock".

I was correcting Keith, on Donnie's 2nd AT40 solo hit. It WAS 'Love is like a rock'.

A couple weeks ago Commentary Casey mentioned Jeff Osborne's 11 top 40s.... hard to believe since he gets like zero oldies airplay today.
