Does anyone know the greatest number of songs to have debuted in the top 40 any in one particular week -- and, if any one particular chart week is distinguished for individually having the greatest number of debut songs ?

I've always heard that the answer is nine debuts. I believe it was in 1975. Ironically, it was a guest-hosted show.

The week with nine was 10/11/1975, which was guest-hosted by Wink Martindale.
There were a number of weeks with eight, including at least two occasions where it happened two weeks in a row, in 1974 and 1978. (In the latter case, there was a special the first week, so the second week AT40 listeners got to hear 16 new songs that hadn't been in the last regular weekly countdown.) Following an occurrence in 1982, eight debuts did not happen again for many years, until well into the Shadoe era.
From past discussion here, nine Top 40 debuts also happened on the Billboard Hot 100 at least one additional time, in 1970, prior to the point AT40 went on the air. And there were three weeks in the '60s that featured ten Top 40 debuts on the Billboard Hot 100.

I have the vinyl records to the 10/11/75 show with Wink. It is one of my favorite weeks. I thought Wink did a great job hosting and there was alot of action in the countdown. A debut at #19. Big jump to #1 from #6. Too bad it will never be played by XM or Premier (unless maybe when Wink passes away).

I believe there were four weeks in the 80's where there were eight debuts (at least during Casey's run--somebody correct me if that's inaccurate), but of course none that had nine. Funny thing though--those shows were 6/13/81, 8/1/81, 4/10/82 and 6/19/82--all within about a year of each other.

And the next time there would be eight debuts on AT40 would be sometime in the summer of 1991.

One of the shows mentioned above is being played by SXM this week and it has the distinction of being the AT40 with the most consecutive debuts to start the show, 8. It's the 10/12/74 show with songs 40-33 all being debut records.

10/12/74 show had PAPA DON’T TAKE NO MESS PART 1 – JAMES BROWN(#39; re-entered Top 40) was its third week in the Top 40. It actually debuted 9/21/74. It is one of the rare songs that moved up the chart five or more positions only to fall out of the Top 40 the following week on two separate occasions during the same chart run. Run: 86-76-56-44-38-31-44-39-75-72-100.

All those songs and nobody got higher than #3. Hard to believe ONJ could have such an incredible debut (jumping in from #52) in an era before downloads and streaming, and then peter out short of the top 10.

^I have posted this before but that ONJ record is the highest debut in the 70s and 80s that did NOT make the top 10.

If AT40 were still using the Hot 100 today, there would be 17 on the weekend of July 14, 2018. And all of them by Drake.

A Shadoe AT40 on 6/29/1991 had 8 debuts.

That was the chart I referenced above. Shadoe even mentioned that the 6/19/1982 chart was the last chart to have that many debuts.
