I believe, in the era of music videos, that sure hurt artists. Even pop ones. If people liked a tune, seeing an older or unattractive guy/girl certainly hurt.
Might explain why people suddenly stopped charting. Christopher Cross, Paul Davis, Matthew Wilder....

Look at this week's 1982 show, country up and down the chart, not just the top 40. Three years later, country was locked outta the entire Hot 100. It's amazing how hostile radio got in such a short period of time.
