The lost 70s classic from October 9, 1971 was climbing the Hot 100. In its fourth week it moved from 72-64. Unfortunately it would stop short of the Top 40 peaking at #44. The ex-lead singer of Smith would reach #9 on the adult contemporary charts. One of the memorable female vocalists of the late 60s - early 70s, she left the music business during the latter half of the 70s. She settled in Missouri and worked in the retail and information technology field. She succumbed to cancer in March 2016 at the age of 67. It's A Crying Shame - Gayle McCormickThis would be covered four years later by the Grass Roots but never make Billboard's Hot 100: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC1H4TgdqdE

It's A Crying Shame - Gayle McCormickThat's a sad ending. She had an incredible voice and should've seen more success. Dunhill Records released an album titled Juggernauts Of The Early 70s in 1972. It contained a sampling of the label's artists, including Smith's "Baby It's You", "It's A Crying Shame" and other hits by the Grass Roots, Three Dog Night, Mama Cass and Jim Croce.

This week’s lost classic for October 16, 1976 was an airplay staple on many FM rock stations throughout the 70s and beyond. And while “White Bird” by It’s A Beautiful Day briefly ‘bubbled under’ the Hot 100 upon its original 1969 release, a group member’s solo version was released as a single in late 1976. In fact, Amherst Records was so convinced of the remake’s potential that they ran a full-page ad for David LaFlamme’s “White Bird”, proclaiming “One of the most played, most requested songs on radio, is finally available again.” Unfortunately, the ’76 release reached only #89 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Two for the price of one. The original… www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFBqyAN8BwThe LaFlamme version… www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3UaI_x_MD8

As Rose Royce's "Car Wash" was bubbling under the Hot 100 for a fifth week(??), the lost 70s classic for October 16, 1976 was crawling its way through the 40s moving from 47-45 in its sixth week on the Hot 100. The following week it would peak at #43 then disappear from the Hot 100, ending a 7 week chart run. The follow-up to their #3 smash, it is a pleasant sound-alike song complete with the signature xylophone solo during the bridge. I Got To Know - Starbuck--------------------------------------- By the way, "Car Wash" would make its debut the following week at #86 beginning its climb to the top, though it took a while (86-82-79-75-65-52-42-22-17-9-5-3-2-1)

"It's A Cryin' Shame" made the 2023 list of the 100 Greatest "Lost 45's" which are voted every year by the listeners of Barry Scott's radio show "The Lost 45's"-Fantastic song that's greater than its chart position.

Were there any other Hot 100 singles on the 2023 list that failed to reach the Top 40?

He is also doing new music and it's really good!

For this week's lost 70s classic from October 28, 1972, we shine a spotlight on a parody release. National Lampoo n put their comedic bent on a Les Crane Top 10 hit from the previous year. In its third week on the charts, the song would hold at #93. The following week it would reach a peak of #91 before exiting. Notably, this is the first Hot 100 single to feature the vocals of Melissa Manchester. Including duets, she would have 15 singles reach the Hot 100. Seven would peak in the Top 40, with three reaching the Top 10. Deteriorata - National Lampoo n

Norman as well as some TV commercials like Kenner's Star Wars toys).

This week's lost 70s classic from November 4, 1978 only spent 2 weeks in the Hot 100, both at #86. The movie was bad and although the soundtrack spun off three Top 40 hits, it was generally panned save for Earth, Wind and Fire's Top 10 cover of "Got To Get You Into My Life" This was not one of them, but hey why not have someone cover a Beatles #1 hit who was credited on the original? Get Back - Billy Preston

Get Back - Billy PrestonJust bought the film on Blu-ray (previously had it on DVD). This time I listened to the commentary by some pop culture historian, which was pretty interesting (although it was weird when at one point, while referring to George Burns' career upswing in the 70s, he quotes LL Cool J - "Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years"; somehow it seems fitting).
