Was that one of the only times AT40 played the intro to Michael Jackson’s “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You?”. The spoken word intro “A lot of people misunderstand me/I just want to touch you and hold you..”. I don’t remember if they’ve ever played the version with the spoken word intro. It as nice that Siedah Garrett got her own spotlight. She’s a talented singer/songwriter. She co-wrote Jackson’s 4th #1 off then “Bad”, “Man In The Mirror” with Glen Ballard. Rumour has it Prince was invited to sing on “Bad” but he objected to the opening line “Your butt is mine”. Barbara Streisand and Whitney Houston were also invited to duet with Michael but also declined.

There was a 1986 AT40 show where the spoken word intro for Bruce Springsteen's live cover version of Edwin Starr's "War" was played.

I got the album "Bad" on vinyl for Christmas that year, which had the spoken intro. A few years later, I got the album on CD (which I still have), and the spoken intro was taken out...thankfully.

Did the 45 single and cassette single of "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" include the spoken word intro in it?

I guess 1980 can wait until November so I can hope 11/1/1980 will air on AT40: The 80's with the 3 AT40 Archive songs back in the broadcast.

Optional extras for September 29, 1984:
Hour #1: "Purple Rain" - Prince (NR) Hour #2: "Better Be Good To Me" - Tina Turner (#42) Hour #3: "Teacher Teacher" - .38 Special (#71; debuted) Hour #4: "Out Of Touch" - Daryl Hall & John Oates (#48; highest debut)
Purple Rain entered the Hot 100 at #28 the following week. The last time this show aired, in 2019, the Hour 2 extra was the Cars’ “You Might Think”, as a tribute to the late Ric Ocasek (the band is in the countdown with “Drive”.)

Also for 9/26/1987: A question letter to Casey about other songs sung in Spanish to hit the top 10 besides "La Bamba" by Los Lobos - "Guatamala" by the Sandpipers, and "Eres Tu" by Moscades. (Post 1987, would "Macarena" by Los Del Rio from the mid 1990's count?) That's "Guantanamera". Not the Central American country, or a misspelling of it. And Casey did add that the song contains a spoken-word section in English. There's also "Despacito" by Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi, a #1 hit in 2017 that was originally all in Spanish. However, the AT40/pop hit version with Justin Bieber may have too many English lyrics to qualify. [/quote] "telepatia" by Kali Uchis hit #8 in 2021 which was sung in Spanglish.

Other than maybe just wanting the single edit, I wonder why later editions edited out the spoken word intro? I know that stalking awareness had come to the forefront (since Rebecca Schaefer’s death came two years after the original “Bad” album was issued), as the intro seems creepy, rather than (possibly) intimate words to an established girlfriend. Brian I certainly don't think Michael intended anything sinister in the opening, but it is quite frankly a bit much; the song overall is better without it. Though I also don't think stalking awareness is necessarily a factor here or on music in general. If it were, then maybe "Every Breath You Take" (every move you make, every step you take, I've been watching you...) would not still be endlessly replayed after 40 years.

This wasn't the first time MJ did something like that. Remember the mini spoken intro to PYT? "You know you, you make me feel so good inside I always wanted a girl just like you. Such a P.Y.T., Pretty Young Thing, ooh"

The 70s-show thread currently is noting that the past week's show omitted Larry Morgan's usual intro, and went right to the theme. Presumably, Larry did a closing, else that would have been noted, too. This isn't occurring with 80s shows, is it?
