1982 was, IMO, the most incredible/ridiculous year in terms of chart stats during the classic Casey era; several songs holding at their peak for several weeks, and large drops out of the top 40, 20, and even 10 (highest is 6). In terms of music preferences recently discussed, I was just a toddler in 1978, and yet that is the beginning of what I call my musical sweet spot. I remember many of the songs that Casey counted down (though I didn't regularly listen to AT40 until June 1984). We also have some on here who love music from years before they were even born (yep, me included). We're all different, and that's beautiful, as long as we can all respect each other's opinions. 🙂 And the next year in 1983, that guy who handled that 1982 chart year got dismissed from Billboard.

I just heard 3-12-88 on my go to station B97. Casey mentioned the "endangered species" of vocal groups hitting #1. Slowly but surely that would change in the next 10 years starting with New Kids On The Block the following year in 1989. 1990 was the year of Wilson Phillips. Boyz II Men was probably the most successful vocal group in the 90's. There some others to name a few such as TLC, All 4 One. Color Me Badd, and of course the "Boy Band Explosion " in the later 90's.

Oddly enough, the two songs by vocal groups that had gone to #1 in the 80s fell short on the Radio & Records CHR chart (though there might have been one or two songs that hit #1 on R&R chart but not AT40 during that time).

Thanks to ABC's purchase of Watermark, by the first weekend in April, network commercials returned to the countdown. And some long-time affiliates were dropped in Mar'82, granting broadcast rights to the first of many ABC stations. One most notable example, AT40 debuted on Chicago's WLS-AM (weekend of April 3, 1982) after a 3-year stint on WBBM-FM.

It’s somewhat ironic that AT40 went from an FM to an AM affiliate in one of the nation’s largest markets at a time when pop music stations were overwhelmingly moving in the opposite direction. The same happened in New York for several years in the early 80s.
Spring 1982 is also when the national commercials were first listed on the cue sheets, as well as when the logo changed, replacing the iconic but arguably dated looking Uncle Sam hat logo that had been used from the beginning.

During the 3/12/88 show, Casey mentions some top 10 songs that used “tears” in the title. Surprisingly he failed to mention the 1979 megahit “No More Tears” by Barbara Streisand and Donna Summer which would’ve been one of the biggest hits out of the montage played.

Kinda surprised that "No More Tears" got left off the montage that Casey played.

Kinda surprised that "No More Tears" got left off the montage that Casey played. And Casey didn't mention the left out "No More Tears" song in any AT40 show between late March 1988 and the last Casey first run AT40 show from August 6, 1988.

Guessing that happened in a few of markets when AT40 was pushed to move to ABC affiliated stations. Smaller market--but it also happened in Omaha, where AT40 left KGOR (99.9FM "Rock 100" at the time) for 590AM WOW in the spring of '82. As a kid, I remember it just sort of disappearing from radio since we never listened to anything music-wise on AM radio, so I wasn't aware of the change until years later. WOW flipped to country and thus dropped AT40 altogether sometime in the next year and AT40 wouldn't resurface there until the spring of 1984 on KQKQ Sweet 98.

"B" show could be 3/28/1987, which also hasn't aired since 2015.

WFMX is airing March 16, 1985. I'm guessing this will be this week's "B" show.
