Bizarre how two shows in back to back weeks had the same extra choice. Not really - they could even be lazy when they felt like it: April 23 and April 30 had three out of the same four extras, the only change being "Nothin' But a Good Time" replaced "We All Sleep Alone", which went to the countdown on 4/30. The other three: "Circle in the Sand", "The Flame", and "Pour Some Sugar on Me". As for July 9 versus July 16 - Tracy Chapman, George Michael, and Robert Palmer were the three that went to the countdown on 7/16, leaving GNR as the one who didn't. Both the recently played 6/25/1988 and this weeks 7/9/1988 shows used Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car' as Optional Extras. Not back-to-back, necessarily, but several songs have been used in multiple weeks (and not even for the purposes of a tribute) And let us not speak of 'Sweet Home Alabama's use in the last year on the 70's side lol... I think that was close to getting a trifecta in consecutive weeks across a few years.

Remember how once upon a time there was all that debate as to whether or not 7/4/87 was a playable show, etc.? Now it's been aired...4 times in all? Sorry, I don't recall that debate. Why was the show considered by some to not be playable? I think it was because the recording that they had prior to 2015 just wasn't up to airworthy sound quality standards. (I'm not going back through the thread to search that debate out, but I recall something like that being said.) That's happened occasionally; around this time in 2013 Premiere had 7/25/81 scheduled, but found that their version wasn't properly mastered or otherwise of playable quality, and so 8/1/81 was played instead in July, a week before its calendar-fitting date. (7/25 wasn't aired by Premiere until 2017).

Right--if I had to guess, I'd assume that Premiere has some sort of QC check they do on these shows to ensure the sound quality, etc. are acceptable to be forwarded to subscribing stations, and 7/4/87 needed some upgrades or fixes to pass that. Funny thing, 7/4/87 was played by SXM back in 2009 or so (when they were still airing AT40 80's shows) ... maybe SXM's standards weren't as high?

Optional extras for July 12, 1986:
Hour #1: "Dancing On The Ceiling" - Lionel Richie (NR) Hour #2: "Baby Love" - Regina (#47) Hour #3: "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)" - Glass Tiger (#86) Hour #4: "Point Of No Return" - Nu Shooz (#87)
Of note, "Dancing On the Ceiling" entered the Hot 100 at #40 the following week. And "Baby Love" replaces Berlin's "Take My Breath Away"; ironic that they should replace a song from Top Gun when its sequel, like the original, is one of the summer's biggest hits.
The 1978 optional extras are the same as before, listed in the 70s thread.

If I recalled when Jul 12 1980 aired in 2013 and 2015B, first opt xtra was Who Shot JR song. Yes; it was changed to "Lookin' For Love" in 2019, when this show was the B to a 1987 A, at a time when 1987 and 1988 were still paired with earlier 1980s B's. There's another connection there. Johnny Lee would go on to marry Charlene Tilton who played Lucy on "Dallas." Even though she wasn't considered a hard suspect, she did say in interviews that the producers had filmed her and other cast members shooting J.R.

This week’s optional extras: A: July 12, 1980: Hour #1: "Lookin' For Love" - Johnny Lee (#67; highest debut) Hour #2: "Boulevard" - Jackson Browne (#53) Hour #3: "Drivin' My Life Away" - Eddie Rabbitt (#55) Hour #4: "I'm Alright" - Kenny Loggins (#88; debuted) B: July 9, 1988: Hour #1: "Fast Car" - Tracy Chapman (#43) Hour #2: "Sweet Child O' Mine" - Guns n' Roses (#56) Hour #3: "Simply Irresistible" - Robert Palmer (#46) Hour #4: "Monkey" - George Michael (#42; highest debut) Isn't this the 88 show where Shadoe Stevens gets his only ever mention of the series? Larry mentioned Shadoe at least once more in 2019 after staff member Matt Wilson died. Larry did a tribute at the end of the show and said that Matt was the only person to work for Casey, Shadoe and Ryan.
