uhm... There's gonna be one kinda awkward/timely/politically contentious LDD on this weekend's show. Oof. "You could have swept it from your life / But you wouldn't do it." Paul Anka was quoted thusly at the time: "What I'm saying in the song is that there is a choice. The [women's] libbers will get on me; I can't help that. I am into the antihuman thing, and I do understand the other side of it. [Opens mouth, inserts foot] There are those who can't cope, and it's not in the cards for them to have kids. I'm a libber myself in the sense that...if you've got to abort, you do." Let's just say, if this song came out nowadays, the feminists would be the least of Paul's worries.

I am now listening to AT40: The 80's 6/30/1984 this Sunday morning via WXXM Rewind 92.1 FM Madison, Wisconsin - this would make up for those who didn't hear that 6/30/1984 AT40: the 80's last night on WVLI Kankakee due to the WVLI station playing for no reason the previous week's 6/25/1988 AT40: The 80's episode.
Things to know: * Is this one of a few times Casey told the story on how Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 got their musical career start start thanks to a broken family television set that the Jackson family couldn't afford to get it fixed? This ties in with Michael Jackson's "Farewell My Summer Love". I think the other time was in late 1987 to tie in with Michael Jackson's "Bad" song or Michael Jackson's "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" song. * This is the second show in June 1984 where a Kiss extra was played. On 6/16/1984 it was "Rock and Roll All Nite (Live)" tied in with some story dealing with a Michigan college hosting a Kiss concert in 1974 or something like that, on 6/30/1984 it was "Beth" for the first LDD. * The highest debut on AT40 6/30/1984 is Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters". I was lucky to see back in November 2021 at the local movie theatre the long delayed a year and a half due to the pandemic "Ghostbusters Afterlife" movie. And if you get the comic strip Mark Trail in your Sunday comics newspaper today on 6/26/2022, there's in one of the panels a parody of the "Ghostbusters" theme song: "When you got a slope...with too much growth...who you gonna call? Goat Busters!"

Paul Anka perchance? EDIT I just saw the cue sheet. Don Williams or Chilliwack? Oh. Don Williams. Hey it's funny the two LDDs on the same show had almost the same song title. These must be the LDDs for next week's show, 7/3/82? This week's LDDs were "Beth" and "You're Having My Baby". Oops. Spoiler alert! So it was Anka after all. Yes, remarkable timing on that one. Will he be remembered more for you're having my baby, or the guys get shirts? www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LsnW0WZlKQ

Let's just say, if this song came out nowadays, the feminists would be the least of Paul's worries. Even in 1991...let's just say there's a reason that "Miracle" quickly sank Whitney Houston's I'm Your Baby Tonight album (despite all protestations at the time that "oh, it's not about that"). Less well-known: There's a reason why Robyn (then an up-and-coming teen star) had no real follow-up album here in the States after 1998.

You are a funny guy! Arby's was founded in Boardman, Ohio, on July 23, 1964, by brothers Forrest (1922–2008) and Leroy Raffel, owners of a restaurant equipment business who thought there was a market opportunity for a fast food franchise based on a dish other than hamburgers. They wanted to call their restaurants "Big Tex", but that name was already used by an Akron business. Instead, they chose the name "Arby's," based on R. B., the initials of Raffel Brothers; although often mistaken for Roast Beef. As is Arby's "roast beef". They probably could call the brisket "roast beef" but they're locked into calling the beef-flavored loaf "roast beef". It is good though! Yeah, it is good, but my Mom remembers going to a Michigan City, Indiana Arby's back around 1968-1969 when they did have real roast beef!

I had to explain to my wife part of the reason that Seals and Crofts weren't as big as they may have been in the 1970's due to the single release of "Unborn Child".

"Chariots Of Fire" replaces "Hot In The City" in honor of Vangelis, who recently passed away. Premiere optional extras for 6/27/87 remain the same as in 2016: "La Bamba" - Los Lobos "Seven Wonders" - Fleetwood Mac "Luka" - Suzanne Vega "Back In The High Life Again" - Steve Winwood

I believe there are AT40 specials from the 70s and 80s that Premiere's affiliates will have access to as Bonus shows for the holiday weekend.

And here are the "American Top 40--the 90s" extras:
July 4, 1998:
Hour #1: "Stay (I Missed You)" - Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories Hour #2: "Just Another Day" - Jon Secada Hour #3: "Kiss From A Rose" - Seal Hour #4: "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" - UB40
July 3, 1999:
Hour #1: "The Way" - Fastball Hour #2: "Vision Of Love" - Mariah Carey Hour #3: "Fields Of Gold" - Sting Hour #4: "Last Kiss" - Pearl Jam
All of these are from "America's Top Hits", with Casey's intros. Of them, only "Last Kiss" fits the traditional optional extra pattern of a song moving toward the top 40 on the week featured, though "The Way" does appear in the 1998 chart.

Actually, had it not been for the "You Are So Beautiful" LDD, everything about that show would have come from the 90s. For 1999, is "Last Kiss" pulled from a different show with an ATH story? (My bet would otherwise be that it's not and that instead, Larry Morgan would voice that extra.) What this week IS, though, is the week where R&R ditched their previous airplay-monitoring system and converted to using Mediabase - in the process, the chart also changed recurrent rules from 25/26 to 20/20. "Last Kiss", incidentally, made the highest debut on that week's chart at #43. As to the two Top Hits not heard there, they're both from the 80s - one will be heard in the 1987 B show at #15 ("Something So Strong"), while the other is in fact a LDD during the show ("Every Breath You Take"). Yes, there are at least two weeks that I know of - both in 1999 - where they picked a song to be one of that week's America's Top Hits AND the song was also a LDD in the countdown itself. (The other is 10/16, with "In Your Eyes" playing double duty.)

Prediction for next show:
7/12/86
1986 has had the longest drought so odds are it'll be this one. 7/12/80 is also eligible but seems doubtful having been played so many times in the series (why not just have 7/26/80 later in the month?) But if 7/12/80 is on the schedule it can certainly wait until the following week.
