This show marked the first time 1971 that a weekly countdown had aired on the 4th of July weekend instead of a special. Assuming everyone here is well aware--Casey promoted a coming special that was to feature the top 40 albums during the 6/12/82 show, but such a show never came to fruition -- I've always wondered if that was originally planned to be the 4th of July special in 1982 but for some reason they were unable to pull it off. AT40 would of course air a 4th of July special in 1983, followed by two years with no specials, and then aired specials along with a weekly countdown for 4th of July weekend the last 3 years of Casey's first AT40 stint. How would an album countdown have worked on AT40? Would Casey have played the biggest hit from each featured album? Or what exactly?

Here were the extras when 6/30/84 was last played in 2017 Hour #1: "Round And Round" - Ratt Hour #2: "The Warrior" - Scandal featuring Patti Smyth Hour #3: "Sexy Girl" - Glenn Frey Hour #4: "Stuck On You" - Lionel Richie Who in their right mind thought "Sexy Girl" was a better choice for lead single from Glenn's album over "Smuggler's Blues?" Heck, they even did a video for SB way before Miami Vice turned the song into a hit. I remember seeing it on a syndicated hourlong M-F show called "Top 40 Videos." Miami Vice had not even premiered yet as of June 30 - it didn't hit TV until September. The likely reason for the well-before-then video would be that "Smuggler's" was issued to AOR at the same time that "Sexy Girl" was issued to Pop, in 1984. (Billboard shows "Smuggler's" as debuting on the Rock chart the last week of July 1984 but not peaking until the first week of June 1985, so evidently it must have had two chart runs there - "Sexy", on the other hand, did not chart on Rock at all.)

Why? A countdown based upon 8 1/2 years would have very little meaning or interest. Your quoted poster is off - dth1971 asked about that tabulation, not matt as your post indicates. And your response is within the quoted part of dth, so it looks like you didn't post anything. Just saying.

Not sure -- there wasn't much detail given in the promo, but I think it might have been a top 40 albums of the rock era kind of thing (rather than what was done on 8/5/72 with the current top 40 albums). Presumably it would've featured one song from each LP...but that's mostly my own speculation.

Always called him Terrence Trent Arby's... You are a funny guy! Arby's was founded in Boardman, Ohio, on July 23, 1964, by brothers Forrest (1922–2008) and Leroy Raffel, owners of a restaurant equipment business who thought there was a market opportunity for a fast food franchise based on a dish other than hamburgers. They wanted to call their restaurants "Big Tex", but that name was already used by an Akron business. Instead, they chose the name "Arby's," based on R. B., the initials of Raffel Brothers; although often mistaken for Roast Beef. ...and I lived in Poland, by Boardman for about 8 years when I was small. I went in the first Arby's many times in the mid-70s, until I moved out of the area in 1978.

If that never made 1982 AT40 Top 40 Albums of the Rock Era was a reality, the #1 album of all time would have been either Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" or the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack or the South Pacific Soundtrack or the Grease Soundtrack or the West Side Story soundtrack. Although a year later in 1983 Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album and 2 years later Prince's "Purple Rain" album both would almost set records.

And even if such a countdown had actually been aired, Premiere might never have offered it, at least officially, as most of the music would have been pre-1980s. Other than the Christmas shows most of the specials they offer to 70s or 80s affiliates consist mostly or entirely of music from their respective decades.

Maybe the "Top 40 Albums of the Last 10 Years" would have been better for a 1982 AT40 special.

Programming Note: This weeks AT40 the 80's may start a little later than 3 PM. Magic 103.1 / WTOJ is running an Elvis Presley special at noon on Saturday which could push back the start of Casey. We're celebrating the movie this weekend and the Legend of a King.
