The DM song has shown up in plenty of soundtracks and commercials in the last 40 years, so it's not like it's a totally unknown entity. {shrug} Seems like this discussion comes up whenever there's an album-cut song used, instead of something strictly off of the Hot 100. Wasn't there a Fleetwood Mac album cut that Premiere used as an extra a few years back? Most of the time it seemed like they erred towards a track of the 'classic rock' variety as opposed to a dance/club hit. "Just Can't Get Enough" has shown up in many places over the years, and it even was the collective name of a series of 15 (IIRC) albums of 80s new wave hits put out by Rhino. Given that plus Depeche Mode's enduring popularity it makes sense as a left-field choice. I think Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album tracks "The Chain" and "Gold Dust Woman" were used as optional extras in 1977 countdowns. While neither was released as a 45, both got and still receive much airplay otherwise, and coming from one of the best selling albums ever they too were good choices. Right. This series with a total of 15 parts was published in 1994 and 1995. The title "New Wave Hits Of The 80s", however, is "remarkable", because Volume 1 includes "My Sharona", "Hey, St. Peter" , "Girls Talk", "Video Killed The Radio Star" ... not really songs that were made in the 80s, but the compilation is successful.

I have a feeling the first extra will be replaced. I feel like Premiere was picking a "curveball" extra almost every week for a while back then. [...] Aren´t "curveballs" just kind of "interesting" in America ?

Similar to Rhino's "Have a Nice Day" ('70s pop) and "Didn't It Blow your Mind" ('70s soul) serie: Both started with 2nd-half 1969 songs on their respective first volumes.

Prediction for next show: 12/12/81 It seems like a foregone conclusion with the near 4 month 1981 drought and the show having last aired in 2012. If we don't hear this one then we'll surely have 1981 as the year-end special, and 12/19/87 will probably air here. 12/20/80 or 12/20/86 should be up the weekend before Christmas. With 1984 and 1981 scheduled for December, I'm inclined to think that 12/20 or 12/27/86 is the last regular show of the year, as by then 1986 will be the year not heard in the longest. Then I think 1987 will be the year end show, as it's the year end special not featured as the "A" show in the longest (only once before, in 2012), though if that's so then several December 1986 songs will be repeated in the next two weeks. That isn't unprecedented: in 2007 a December 1983 show was followed by the 1984 year end countdown, and in 2010 December 1984 was followed by the 1985 top 100, with several songs being heard in back to back weeks both times.

Here´s a short overview of the year-end-countdowns (hope I´m right): 1980: 2008 (only the Top 50), 2014 1981: 2013 1982: 2009 (only the Top 50), 2016 (A) 1983: 2011, 2017 1984: 2007, 2015, 2020 1985: 2010, 2019 1986: 2009 (only the Top 50), 2018 1987: 2012, 2016 (B)

Which is somewhat curious considering that it has always appeared that Premiere has tried to avoid playing the same year as the scheduled year-end special during November and December, presumably to avoid having too many common songs, etc. But common song overlaps are much more significant for a weekly countdown from December of the year prior to the scheduled year-ender (but then again, maybe Premiere's schedulers haven't really tried to do that and it's just the perception of us listeners). That has also happened in the 70's series btw -- in 2015 the 1974 Top 100 followed 12/15/73.

For those that listen to KZOY on Winamp or other music players through this link, it has been down for the last couple of days so it might not be available this weekend. However, this link from Online Radio Box can be used as an alternate. (WWIS uses the same Secure Net Systems link* and theirs is working just fine.) *Not quite the same; WWIS's starts with "ice5" and KZOY's starts with "ice3".

I'm not sure I understand the controversy over 'WKRP', either. I think I've heard it played more in the last 2-3 years (frequent rotation over on the Yacht Rock station... which is no small feat considering how many Loggins/McDonald/Steely Dan/etc songs take up that channel) than I ever heard it back when it was released. I love that Yacht Rock has WKRP in rotation. I loved the song back in 1981, specifically the 'tailored to the market' version. I believe a version was available to many markets that called out the local radio station replacing the final .. WKRP .. verse with your local station call letters. Mine in Maine was .. WIGY .. Bath/Brunswick!

Casey made a faux pas in the intro to "Valotte", referring to the artist as John Charles Julian Lennon, when it is actually Julian Charles John Lennon. He just got the "J" names mixed up.
