What exactly was Premiere's motive, for giving us OEs that were months away from debuting on AT40? Please say. Thanks! Maybe it's a subtle hint that there will be no shows offered after August 6,1988.

If I were in charge of Premiere, I'd allow the Shadoe shows for the rest of the decade to be broadcast, and just drop the Casey Kasem's tag from the broadcast. Just have it be 'American top 40'. sacrilegious!!!

My Tune In Radio has Magic 103.1 listed as playing the 80s show ,but instead it’s an All Christmas weekend.First song I heard was The Carpenters and thought what is going on

. I like the 70s more too. When it gets to 1986 and 87 I find I like fewer songs I love '75-'84. Anything before '75 is often boring, and after '84 is when music starts morphing into brain-numbing techogarbage. Listening to '88 and the last half of '87 is like being ear-***ed. So rude!

We did play the regular AT40 countdowns, however. Personally, I was against the idea but was overruled by the boss.

Not sure why Premiere does them that way, unless that's their way of trying to fill out 1988 by playing songs during Shadoe's tenure that we won't hear counted down in this series. I think that is exactly why they do it. At one time, IINM, all of the 1988 shows had "regular" extras (songs outside the Top 40 on the selected week's chart), then they began picking songs from later in 1988 as a way to work those songs (which wouldn't otherwise be heard in this series) into the series. Some shows stick to the selected week's chart with songs outside the 40; others are songs that charted late in 1988/early 1989. Haven't figured out the pattern with that yet... Is the pattern simply this: shows we hear today in the former category are reruns of shows whose optional extra segments date from the period when Premiere was doing things that way (i.e. shows whose first rebroadcast, or at least first rebroadcast in the Larry Morgan era, was ~5-10 years ago), while shows in the latter category are shows whose optional extra segments are more recent (i.e., shows whose first rebroadcast, or at least first rebroadcast in the Larry Morgan era, was in the past ~five years; or if not, are shows that have their optional extra segments re-done in the past ~five years)? Or does Premier tend to mix this up a bit with newly done optional extra segments?

Also for WMGN Magic 98: For their own end of hour #1 and hour #2 extras they used songs charted on Shadoe AT40 for a year later in 1989: "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones (originally charted on AT40 in 1980) and "Rock On" by Michael Damien.

Can we just skip ahead to next weekend where we get a dose of Commentary Casey and one of my favorite ever countdowns from 1981! I'll be the first to admit that I tend to listen to the 70s shows, as opposed to the 80s. But for some reason today I decided to catch the '81 show on WPNC. And I must admit I'm enjoying listening to this countdown. There's a lot of gems in this particular countdown that you never hear on the radio anymore, especially from 40-21. That's so 1981 to me -- especially the early part of the year. I've posted this before, but I feel like for the majority of 1981 countdowns, the first two hours are (sometimes by far) the best part of the show. There are a number of terrific songs that seemed to top out in the 20s or 30s, and the top 10s were filled with too many sappy slow sleep-inducing ballads. It's like most of the top 40s that year were flipped upside down...

What exactly was Premiere's motive, for giving us OEs that were months away from debuting on AT40? Please say. Thanks! Isn't that the norm for '88 shows? At some point it became the norm, maybe around 2013 or so? Before that they played songs on their way up the Hot 100 as OE's like any other year. I guess Premiere decided to use 1988 shows as an opportunity to slip in songs that came about after Casey left AT40. I always remove those songs from my recordings of the shows since they don't fit with the rest of the show like most extras do.

And you'd probably get fired or demoted when the show's ratings for those weeks took a nose dive. Not knocking Shadoe--I like him, and I'm guessing most of us on the boards do too. But the majority of casual listeners tune in because they like listening to Casey hosting the countdowns and wouldn't have interest in hearing anyone else.

I can think of NOTHING more horrifying than pandemic Christmas music, except perhaps the movie Gremlins singing Christmas music. Time to break out "Three Minutes of Silence" instead.
