Do you also remember on the 5/29/1993 AT40 episode Shadoe Stevens played the live unplugged version of "Mr. Wendall" by Arrested Development? It didn't bother me nearly as much when an alternate version was played one time, and acknowledged as such by the host. As noted above, my aggravation was in cases where a show played an unusual version of a song throughout its run as though that was how the song should sound.

Indeed. One time or two is a treat; all the time is revisionist.

In 1992, there was an odd version played of "I'm The One You Need" by Jody Watley. It wasn't the one my local Top 40 station was playing. Oh yes, I never found out about that version, it's not any of the remixes I found, only similar to some of them. Sometimes they had a different version of a song that was not available anywhere, I guess they were only promo edits. A good example is Calloway's I wanna be rich, that wasn't the album or single version, and I never found in any of their singles/maxis releases. It seems that this version has recently surfaced - it would seem that your hunch is correct that this was only on the promo CD (likely issued to stations for their exclusive use).

9/2/89 has both of these: This clip, on the other hand, is the version that starts with his rap. As is this one, which clocks in at 4:30. Seeing as the former is a video of the 45 record playing, this has to be the single version. It's also the one that played on 7/8. While I'm at it, I have another entry from this same time. Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted". Whereas, on 7/15 which I just finished up earlier, it's the album version as heard here. (Instead of a rap, there are short instrumental breaks between the first verse + chorus pairs and between the second pair and bridge; the single version cuts these breaks out.) With the following additional change: Bobby gets cut to about 2:30. Kind of interesting that Paula gets the album version again the week she hits #1.

"Once Bitten, Twice Shy" sounds slightly different on 9/16/89, though it's subtle. I notice it more in Jack Russell's enunciation - meaning, it's in the way he sings the song. As heard this week, he puts different emphasis on different lyrics compared to most other weeks.

Also, the version of Snap's Ooops up they played in AT40 is different to the 7" or the album version. I can't find it anywhere, does anyone know if it's available anywhere?

On the original Watermark 10/26/1974 AT40 show the rare 45 version of Art Garfunkel's "Second Avenue" is played, but in the Premiere AT40: The 70's version the edit version (where the bridge/third verse is only heard once) on the 1988 Art Garfunkel Greatest Hits album/CD is played.

Where does the version of Open Your Heart from the 12/20/1986 show come from?

Do you think "I Love Music Parts 1 and 2" combined on AT40: The 70's 12/13/1975 is odd?

Do you think "I Love Music Parts 1 and 2" combined on AT40: The 70's 12/13/1975 is odd? I thought it was great to hear! Assume they had extra time in the show that week, especially since they also played the longer LP version (I assume) of "Let's Do It Again".

I'm just getting around to listening to last week's 5/8/71 show. I'm curious as to exactly what we were hearing when The Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar" was played. It's my understanding that the original 45 - which I assume is what was played in the original 1971 broadcast - was a dedicated mono mix. Was what we heard a stereo recreation of the mono mix, courtesy of Ken Martin?
From some online research, the biggest difference between the two seems to be in the guitars. On the stereo album mix, two guitars play along in unison, one in the left channel, one in the right. On the mono single mix, there is a reportedly a slight delay in one of the two guitar tracks relative to the other. Listening to the Premiere rebroadcast, I thought the guitars sounded a little different from the version I'm used to hearing, but I'm not completely certain.
Other differences noted in online reports are a horn toot somewhere in the song that is much more prominent on the mono single mix than the stereo album mix (I couldn't find this), and talking on the mono single mix as the song fades out after the closing drumbeats - possibly someone saying "I Like It!" - that is not present on the stereo album mix (when the single was played on the radio, I'm guessing that 99.9% of the time this was inaudible, either talked over by the DJ or obscured as the song was faded down and the next song faded in; I'm sure AT40 was no exception).

On AT40: The 80's B show of May 11, 1985: Was there a longer version (album version, not 45 single version) of the Commodores' "Nightshift" played? Could it be Ken Martin's bag of edit tricks or what the original Watermark AT40 version played?

The LDD of "Cherish" on November 30, 1985 was different than the one AT40 usually played when it was on the chart.
