Once in a while, they played a strange version of a song.
Example. One of the weeks Rock Me Amadeus was at #1, without any reason given, they played the strange 12 inch version instead of either side of the 45. One reason may be because the 12 inch version they played, had elements from both of them to compile it. But its official title was the 12 inch American Edit.
Any other things like this that struck you as odd?

^ You must be referring to April 5 that was aired back on the first week of April. I rather liked that they did that, because I'm really not a fan of the "English"-only version. What version of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" is getting played, though? The background, sort of "African" (?) style vocals that I heard, I don't hear them whenever I hear the song on a classic hits station these days - only on one of the AT40 shows. The "African" vocals sound different, almost like a different set of vocals, whenever I hear it on classic hits.

I think they played the version from So.
And I like the 12" American Edit of Rock Me Amadeus more than the 45 version or the version heard in the music video.
Another example of an odd version of a song played on AT40 - Kathy Troccoli's Everything Changes from 1992. Definitely not the version you'd hear on the radio, but way more upbeat.
Amy Grant's That's What Love Is For from 1991 had a different sound on AT40 than did the music video.

Here are the versions of Rock Me Amadeus that were released:
Video Version (Also on some albums) Most like the American Edit which oddly is mainly in German. American Edit (The one with all the German) one side of the 45 Canadian Version (The one with the chronological look at the life of Mozart) other side of the 45 Saleri Version (On some albums, runs 8:20 and is the long version of the Canadian Version) 12 Inch American Edit (Combo of American Edit & Canadian Version)

They played a strange version of "This Is The Right Time" by Lisa Stansfield in 1990 that neither Casey nor Rick were playing. It certainly wasn't the album or single version.

Shadoe Stevens played a different version of Madonna's Express Yourself in the summer of 1989. A lot different from the version heard on The Immaculate Collection and the music video.
After Madonna was played at #2 on one weekend in July 1989, Shadoe Stevens mentioned that the #1 song that week was also by a one-word singer, also starting with "M" (that "M" being Martika, oddly enough).
I did pick up a March 1987 broadcast today, and it contained Stacey Q's We Connect. The ending of the clip just before the DJ came back on to close off the song had the words "We Connect" sounding a lot different as opposed to the end of the music video. Still, it's extremely rare to hear that song nowadays!

Speaking of Rick, around the same time, he played a different mix (than the single version) of "Can't Stop" by After 7 - at least he did on the September 1, 1990 edition of the show, which is available on his website.

It seems like AT40 always played a different version of "The Finer Things" by Steve Winwood from what was played elsewhere. The production in the verse right after the bridge was vastly different.

Well I'm glad that its not just the one time but I still don't understand the 12 inch version of Rock Me Amadeus. A 45 version/edit/remix is one thing. but a 12 inch version on a show thats not the disco special?

AT40 with Shadoe played a more "dance" version of En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" (rather than the album version), a different mix of Whitney Houston's "Queen of the Night" rather than the one on The Bodyguard soundtrack, and a different version of Eternal's "Stay" than was on the single.
