The 45 rpm record was a wonderful instrument for the distribution of pop music! And, for the money you spent, you got a bonus...a song on the other side. For me, the best one was "Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five by Paul MacCartney and Wings.

What was that the flip of, I forget...
I liked alot, and I mean ALOT of flipsides! For example:
Born Poor, flip of The Rapper by The Jaggerz Broddy Bounce, flip of The Way I Want To Touch You by Captain & Tenille. Short Road To Love, Flip of I Love A Rainy Night by Eddie Rabbitt Mouthful Of Grass, flip of All Right Now by Free. I Go Crazy, flip of Radio Ga Ga by Queen Aranjuez, Flip of Rise by Herb Alpert. Doin Everything With You, flip of Children Of Sanchez Theme by Chuck Mangione
So many to list, maybe I'll have some more later!

As my 45 collection is MUCH larger than my album collection, I've got a few B-sides from the AT40 era worth noting:
From my father's collection: Jackson 5 - Who's Lovin' You (B-side of "I Want You Back") 1970 Chicago - Colour My World (B-Side of "Make Me Smile") 1970 Chi-Lites - Yes, I'm Ready If I Don't Get To Go (B-Side of "Have You Seen Her") 1971 Isaac Hayes - Cafe Regio's (B-Side of "Theme From Shaft") 1971 Dennis Coffey - Sad Angel (B-Side of "Scorpio") 1971
From my collection: Michael Jackson - Working Day & Night (B-Side of "Rock With You") 1979 Starpoint - Send Me A Letter (B-Side of "Object of My Desire") 1985 Culture Club - Sexuality (B-Side of "Move Away") 1986 L.L. Cool J - Jack the Ripper (B-Side of "Going Back To Cali") 1988 bought this one for the flip. Many by Prince: How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore (B-Side of "1999") 1983 17 Days (B-Side of "When Doves Cry") 1984 Erotic City (B-Side of "Let's Go Crazy") 1984 She's Always In My Hair (B-Side of "Raspberry Beret") 1985 Strollin' (B-Side of "Sexy MF") 1992
From my sister's collection: General Public - Limited Balance (B-Side of "Tenderness") 1985
Notable Killer B's I don't have: Roberta Flack - Trade Winds (B-Side of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face") 1972 O-Jays - Sunshine (B-Side of "Back Stabbers") 1972 Chic - Savoir Faire (B-Side of "Le Freak") 1978

Sometimes the B-side will do better than the A-side in a re-release. One good example is Whitney Houston's "You Give Good Love" (Arista 9274) hit #3 and the flip "The Greatest Love of All" hit #1 almost a year later.

Or as part of the same release as in the cases of "Black Water" and "I Will Survive".

Did the other side of I Will Survive do anything? I don't even remember what it was!
And as for Black Water, the original A-Side: Another Park, Another Sunday, clearly the better song, only hit #32 and is a travesty!

"O-o-h Child" by the 5 Stairsteps began life as a B-side according to Joel Whitburn's books. (A-side was their remake of the Beatles' cut "Dear Prudence.") However, my father has a copy of the single with same label & cat. no. in which "O-o-h Child" is the A-side & a great track called "Who Do You Belong To" on the flip. I don't think Whitburn knows this variation exists.

The other side of I Will Survive bubbled under.

Dukedeb... I KNOW SO! lol
Blackbowl: The only copies I can ever find are the one with Who Do You Belong To on the flip. I think this was the re-release after Dear Prudence flopped. Kind of like The Doobie Brothers 45. After Black Water started getting airplay, they issued a new single with that as the A-Side with Song To See You Through as the flipside.

The flipside of J. Geils' "Freez Frame" and that's "Flamethrower". And it begs a question since this is similar to "Come Back" off of their last Lp. When you are successful with a certain type of song, you usually release a similar sounding song off your next Lp. But they did not in this case. Of course, you can't argue with what they did release considering how high they went on that chart. But instead of putting it on the B side of FF, they could have released it instead of "Angel in Blue".

I rather like Angel In Blue. Actually that entire album is amazing beginning to end. Even Piss On The Wall!

One of my favs is "Silver Springs," the B-side of "Go Your Own Way" by Fleetwood Mac.

This being the Christmas season, I'd like to add Elton John's "Ho Ho Ho," which was the flip of "Step Into Christmas". "Ho Ho Ho" was actually the first of those two that I heard, and once I had a chance to hear "Step," (although both are great tunes), it didn't appeal to me quite as strongly as the wackier, quirkier "Ho Ho Ho."
