dukedeb: I agree about the difference in the dates for the 1970 and 1974 episodes. Actually the 1974 show is closer to the actual calendar date because the Billboard charts were "for the week ending." An August 10 show would be already out of date this weekend (8-13/8-14) since as just stated, the Billboard charts are "for the week ending." Also regarding the past 1970 show, the announcer stated "Episode from 8-1-70." Wasn't it really the episode from 7-25-70 but used the chart from 8-1-70?

Wow! If I've counted right, there are 12 number one songs on the 1974 countdown.

My predictions:
* "Another Saturday Night" by Cat Stevens
... and one that never made the top 40, but I'm sure a gold nugget for his fans out there:
* "Travelin' Prayer" by Billy Joel. (Only got up to No. 77 with this'n. He was looking like he was gonna falter and be a mere footnote in pop music history ... or was he?)
... and one that fell out of the top 40 as it fell to No. 49, but then climbed back up the chart and re-entered for a couple of weeks in September:
* "One Hell of a Woman" by Mac Davis.
Backups: "Come Monday" by Jimmy Buffett (in recognition of his recent second No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart -- "Knee Deep" as the guest of the Zac Brown Band) and ... "I Honestly Love You" by Olivia Newton-John.

Oh, have I been waiting for this one! www.yorkharborinn.com/images/York-Beach.jpgThe above link is to a picture of Long Sands Beach in York, Maine. (With a view of Nubble Lighthouse on Cape Neddick off to the north.) As a boy of 14 I listened to this particular countdown coming from Boston's X-15 (WMEX) while spending a glorious day on the beach. The sound of the waves and the seagulls, the smell of salt air and cocoa-butter, the taste of a fried clam sandwich and Pepsi from the Sun & Surf. It's just one of those memories that sticks with you! I look forward to hearing Casey this weekend. I don't know about optional extras but during that week X-15 was pretty big on playing "Carefree Highway" by Gordon Lightfoot, "Sugar Baby Love" by the Rubettes and "I Honestly Love You" by ONJ.

[quote author=lasvegaskid board=classic thread=205 That 1970 show was the "oldest" sounding AT40 I've ever heard. Most of the debuts sounded like 60s holdovers and Casey sounded groovier than ever![/quote]
Yeah -- bet that was a real blast to the past for listeners of stations that play both of AT40's rerun packages, and focus mainly on the rock sound of the mid-to-late 1980s. For stations that normally play songs like "Sledgehammer" and "Invisible Touch," but then to hear songs like "Patches," "Band of Gold," "Check Out Your Mind," et al. ... wow, what a trip!
And fie to all those "AT40: The 80s" affiliates that won't play 1980 or 1981 because of some songs not having anything to do with their format. KOKX of Waterloo (which can be picked up where I live, only on very fringe reception) had no problem playing the 1970s show even though they focus on the 1980s "classic hits"-type rock sound.
