Brian, As I understand it, the "original AT40 extras" that get relegated to "optional" status get so moved for timing purposes. And that's it. Scott And that should be it. My disgust with this is with the individual stations that choose not to play the extras because the songs are too "square." (That would include both KUUL, which plays the 70s show and KMXG, which airs the 80s program.) Yeah, talk to them, but that would do a lot of good, as at least on KUUL the station seems more content to pad out their commercial time with innuendo-filled promos for their morning show and multiple commercials for the local casinos, some airing identical spots twice during the same commercial block(!). Sorry for the rant, but ... Brian I'm with you - which is why I only use the stations that play the OE's - and unlike with the 80's shows, they are few and far between (WJGH - Jacksonville, FL is currently my favorite, and our local station KQQL does NOT play them, so I don't do terrestrial). It sure would be nice to see stations play the extras at a minimum when they are part of the original show (if they don't want to play the Premiere extras then fine)...

Where can the Whitburn books be bought? Probably cost a pretty penny too! And what timeframe do they run? Is it like my Top 40 book that is updated with more info? Or are they by decade? Go to www.recordresearch.com

On to this weekend's show -- predicted to be ...
Aug. 20, 1977.
My backup guess will be Aug. 17, 1974.
When do we get the divine pleasure, then, of 1971?

Based on Pete's clue, next week's countdown will be from August 1977-Rita Coolidge whose song "Higher & Higher" was on the countdown was one of the original VJ's (Video Jocks) when VH-1 premiered in 1985.

Re the 7/31/1976 program, I was out of town last week and only got to listen to the program on WBBG Tuesday night and WMGN this morning. Unfortunately, neither of them played the the Hour 2 extra, "One" by Three Dog Night (although WMGN just played "Hollywood Nights" by Bob Seger between hour 2 & 3; not sure why they couldn't have played the Premiere exta).
Anyway, I would have loved to hear that extra and Casey's story to go along with it. Anybody care to share Casey's intro and outro? Thanks.

Not any outro really but the intro was that Three Dog Night started a streak of 18 top 20 singles in the summer of 1969 with "One", a streak that lasted through the summer of 1974. he said only Elvis and the Beatles had longer streaks. "One" followed "Try a Little Tenderness" into the top 40.

The 8-1-70 chart progam is a winner, start to finish. But, just in case someone asks, there's a blemish that's hardly noticeable in the show.
If you listen closely to Casey's intro to "Ohio", you'll hear a minor flaw in the recording of "...well someone tuning in right now and catching the NEXT two records..." The problem is with the word "next" which, I'll guess, was recorded over a poorly edited splice in the master tape. It's hard to believe that happened but I'm unable to account for the cause of this. Any other ideas?

I thought of that too, but Pete said 'radio announcer,' so I don't think he's refering to "Mrs. Kristofferson."

So what were the optional extras after all the shouting & fighting? They were posted a page ago by mr.jukebox. "I'm Walkin'" (Fats Domino) "Can't Buy Me Love" (The Beatles) and "Gentle On My Mind" (Glen Campbell). All original show extras.

And I'm gonna go on a rant! Just leave the original extras in the show! A year ago or two you could hear a '70 or '71 and they would still be in there & the optional extras were actual songs below the top 40. I remember even hearing "Cinnamon Girl" played which was coo-el by me even though it wasn't a top 40 hit! I love Fats Domino to death but the song wasn't released in 1970! It's taking all the fun & suspense out of guessing the optional extras! Either leave them in the regular show or don't play them at all GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!

By the way I'm guessing next week's show will be August 18, 1973. Helen Reddy was weekly host of "The Midnight Special" for about 9 months from '75 into '76.
