"My Ding A Ling" by Chuck Berry is one of the featured selections on this week's A show presentation from 9/23/72-It was considered quite risque & it was banned on several radio stations across the country-WABC in New York City aka Musicradio 77 played "My Ding A Ling" once-The wife of program director Rick Sklar thought it was the most disgusting song she had ever heard-It was immediately taken off the station's playlist.

Did Chuck do a studio version sometime before this live one was recorded? The audience knew it like it was one of his big hits, and he called it his "alma mater."

In Chicago, I bet it never made the WLS Survey nor the then several month contracted AT40 affiliate Chicago station WCFL Chicago Survey.

The song was first recorded in 1952 by Dave Bartholomew and was titled Toy Bell. In 1966 Berry first recorded it with the title My Tambourine. The song was recorded live in Coventry England. Members of the band backing Berry on the record later went on to become The Average White Band. As far as the crowd singing the song, they probably were taught/coached beforehand what to sing. Women sang the word "my" and men sang "ding-a-ling."

I'm listened WHNR station, and KTRQ (because I missed few songs from WHNR).. 1972 is on now.

1972 was definitely the year of the long songs. "Roundabout", "Isn't Life Strange" and "Nights on White Satin" while not long 45 versions did have long Lp versions. AT40 played the Lp version of Nights once. Compare that with today when most songs are between 2:30 and 3:30. In fact, two songs this week on AT40 are under 2:10 - "Whoops" and "Million Dollar Baby." And "Million Dollar Baby" is the second #1 song of that length or shorter this year. The first was "Greedy".

We got a hint about this coming weekend's AT40: The 70's show is 9/25/1976 - but standalone or B show?

If anyone missed the 9/17/1977 show over the weekend, WPNC will likely play it tomorrow night (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning) at Midnight Eastern.
WPNC actually played both B shows this weekend, as they went with the 1983 show on Sunday (and will replay tonight at midnight). Not so much a surprise that they went with the B show for the 70's slot, but recently they've been playing more 80's B shows.

In Chicago, I bet it never made the WLS Survey nor the then several month contracted AT40 affiliate Chicago station WCFL Chicago Survey. "My Ding A Ling" spent the first two weeks of October 1972 at #1 on the WCFL singles survey. Appears the ding-a-ling never charted on WLS.

Fun fact about this week in 1972 and 1973. Two hit wonder Looking Glass is at #33 both weeks with those 2 hits.
