AT40: The 70's 9/23/1972 with mono2stereo conversion by Ken Martin, has Casey mentioning for Leon Russell entering at #39 that Leon used a fake I.D. or something like that to get in some club. 9/23/1972 is of course, the almost all male AT40 episode except for Cornelious Brothers and Sister Rose which has girls in it. Too bad AT40 never had an all female top 40 nor an all foreign act top 40. There was an all-British hits special in April 1974. An update or all-foreign acts show later (especially in the 80s) would have been interesting.

Don't Ever Be Lonely and My Man, A Sweet Man by Millie Jackson. Millie would totally change her style a few years later and it is doubtful she ever performed 'Sweet Man' in concert after the change.

Ah...I missed that on page 345 of your book. Read it again, more carefully, and see that they did air the previous week's show. But you had missed it. And what a prime air time 'CFL gave it (sarcasm)! 1AM on Sunday morning. When WDHF Chicago picked up AT40 in 1974, did it get a proper morning time slot like 8 AM or 9 AM? Sundays, 9am

A few notes about the Hot 100 dated September 23, 1972…
…The single release of The Spinners song “I’ll Be Around” officially became the charting “A” side on the survey. Debuting on 8/19/72, their song “How Could I Let You Get Away” began climbing the Hot 100 at #91. Billboard then added the flipside’s title on 9/16/72 and proceeded to drop the original “A” reference this week. It peaked at #3 and, altogether, the single spent 18 weeks on the Hot 100.
…With the official end of Summer comes an out-of-season single by Seals & Crofts. In its 3rd week on the Hot 100, “Summer Breeze” climbed from #85 to #71. The song, of course, peaked in the Top 10 at #6, just as weather forecasts of cold and snow regionally became part of an everyday routine.
…And during 1972, there were a handful of Top 40 singles that exceeded the average playing time for a 45. Not counting the two sides of Don McLean’s “American Pie”, they included Harry Chapin’s “Taxi” (6:40), “Layla” by Derek & The Dominos (7:10) and, toward the end of the year, “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” by The Temptations (6:58). The longest playing single of 1972, however, debuted this week at #90. Clocking in at 7:35, Cashman & West’s “American City Suite” eventually peaked on AT40 at #27.
Now back to the countdown!

AT40 played the Lp version of Nights once.

Casey was liberal with his predictions of #1 hits in the mid to late 70s. But his prediction or at least suggestion that "I Just want to be Your Everything" (and you have to do creative thinking to figure out that's the song he is referring to, at least until the end of the show) could be the #1 hit of the year is baffling. Now he was right but technically not. Right only because AT40 compiled their own year end survey. On the Billboard listing which is really the one you have to go by IMO he was wrong. They had "Tonight's the Night" at #1 and rightfully so with its 7 weeks at #1. 8 weeks if you count the frozen week which AT40 did not until 1979. Maybe Casey and the staff were not sure of the survey year and how Billboard would deal with that(sometimes they credited hits for weeks before the survey year started and sometimes not). In which case Tonight would lose a lot of points thus opening the door for Everything to overtake it. By the way, I am told that AT40 compiled their own survey because they did not want a song that spent all of its weeks at #1 in 1976 to be the #1 hit of 1977.

I have a question for anybody who listened to WPAC today or is going to listen to them tomorrow. Did they run any ads for air service from Ogdensburg like they almost always do and if so which airline was it? Ogdensburg is an Essential Air Services city, which means that airlines bid with the federal government to provide air service to small, remote cities for which they are reimbursed. Contour currently has the contract but it is being taken over by Breeze next week. (I was going to listen to the podcast but once again it isn't complete and unlike last week I have the Tuesday night WPNC replay as an option)
