One thing from this past weekend's AT 40 countdown that I was always fond of was the music bed that played under Casey's introduction of a song before the song started to play.
It didn't happen for every song, but enough to make the countdown more interesting to me back then, and still like to hear it nowadays.
I don't know for how many years AT 40 did this, but I know it was unique to this time period.

I have Pete's 1970s book, although it's still in storage. Might have to dig for it soon. I plan on listening to all the 1970-1977 shows later this year.

I suppose now with more free time at home due to 'social distancing', I can go back and listen to the shows from that time period, to see when it started, as well as when it stopped. I really do like those music beds under Casey talking....

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 3/29/75 2nd Guess - 3/31/73
1971, '73, and '75 are all decent possibilities for next weekend -- it wouldn't be a surprise to see any of those three years played...

I know the music beds continued through the rest of March 1974. 4/6 was a special, and then on 4/13 the original 1970 split logo jingles returned (which continued through the 8/16/1975 show). My guess is the music beds ceased then, but I'll have to listen to the 4/13/1974 show to see if that's the case. Looking forward to your findings. Stay safe and healthy! (That's for everyone.)

But the likeliest 1971 show for next weekend would be 3/27/71 which was played as an A two years ago, so it's probably out. 3/25/78 (unplayed since 2011) is also possible.

While I never really minded the music beds while Casey was talking, I never liked what I referred to as the news sounder (a repeating note resembling a news into/bulletin that was common to radio in the 1970's)--many times the 'music' was so loud (and distracting) that it was difficult to concentrate on what Casey was saying. I was certainly glad when they dropped that a couple of years into AT40's run.

I would love to hear 3/25/78 again, especially since my recording of it back in 2011 was a total grease fire -- I ended up having to use four different station streams because I had so many drop outs, and I don't think I got any of the extras. Add to it, WMXY, which used to play a repeat of the show on Tuesday evenings and was kind of a backup if you missed it over the weekend, botched the Tuesday airing by having dead air through most of the second hour, then repeating parts of the show. And here I am still talking about that one from nine years ago if that tells you how frustrated I was at the time! I don't know if they would play a March 25th show next week since a March 26th show is going for next weekend, but you never know. And you're right about 3/27/71 -- it was played in 2018, so they'd have to dip back to 3/20/71, which hasn't been played in years. But again, that would require going out of sequence date-wise, which rarely happens.

Thank you White Squirrel for being around Thursday evenings for AT 40!
Especially with what's going on now all around us...

Just heard the Perez Prado story about his then-untouched 10 weeks at #1 chart feat from 22 years prior. Little did anyone know that the record would be tied just nine months later.
