I recall looking forward to the January 18, 1975 program when it originally aired. One reason in particular, "Lady" by Styx was one of five debut singles. The song was initially released nearly two years earlier and received a fair amount of FM radio airplay in Chicago, the group's home. (Note that Styx had a Hot 100 single eight months earlier which also got played in Chicago.) Although "Lady" didn't make a huge impact at first, the song continued to get requests and FM airplay. And it eventually was added to the playlist of, according to Casey, "a big station in Chicago." And that's what brought the song and the group into the national spotlight.
A side note, Casey was likely advised not to mention the call letters of that "big station." It was in fact, WLS-AM, the primary Top 40 competitor to WDHF-FM, AT40's Chicago station at the time.

Another significant thing about the 1-18-75 countdown is that it was the final week where John,Paul,George, and Ringo each had solo hits in the Top 40 at the same time. I recently listened to the 1-11-75 countdown where Casey played "Sally G"-the flipside to "Junior's Farm" by Paul McCartney & Wings. In regards to the promotion of "Lady" by Styx, it was a time in the world of radio where records were played, requested, and at times, became big hits nationally. In some cases, that carried over into the late 80's where we saw an influx of re-released singles. In today's sad state of radio as we know it, those days are dead and long gone.

Not to mention that jarring, traumatic, tear-jerking ending to the record. In general, people tune in to Top 40 radio to feel GOOD, to hear happy, fun music. They don't want to be slapped in the face with tragedy (unless it's sung by the Bee Gees). You mean the kid’s suicide by drug overdose at the end, right? I suppose you won’t like it that the kids in the song were discouraged from frequenting pool halls, roller skating rinks and bowling alleys. (As one pastor from the 1910s actually sermonized about ... a reference to the “well-attended service” was in an Algona, Iowa, newspaper article about old roller skating rinks in northern Iowa.) Reference to the line: “Why don’t you stay home and read a book?” Brian

"Once You Understand" is painful from start to finish.

I'm looking forward to the 1-18-75 show as well - my senior year in high school.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 1/22/77 2nd Guess - 1/30/71
I'll go with the same show for the second straight week. Otherwise, 1970 last aired in October, which means 1971 is now due...

Interesting to note that the first two optional extras from 1/18/75 were future # 1 hits.
