Somebody mentioned the album versions of several songs in the 11/11/78 show, and I agree--that was fun to hear. I don't believe I've ever heard that version of "Hot Child In the City". And it was nice to hear the full version of "Reminiscing" -- kind of like "Peg", that song was always cut before they went to 4 hours. Billy Joel's "My Life" (debuting that week, so not around during the 3 hr AT40 era) also seemed to have an extra bit in the middle compared to the version I usually hear.

Speaking of 11/17/79 being on the schedule for next weekend, these were the optional extras last time it aired (November 17-18, 2012): Hour #1: "Rapper's Delight" - The Sugarhill Gang (#72) Hour #2: "Disco Lady" - Johnnie Taylor (original AT40 Archive) Hour #3: "Don't Do Me Like That" - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (#71; debuted) Hour #4: "Video Killed The Radio Star" - The Buggles (#74) These will be reused this year. The historically important "Rapper's Delight", which ends the first hour and so won't be heard on most affiliates, never aired on a Premiere-played AT40; it was in the top 40 for two weeks in January 1980, one of which AT40 aired a special (Top 50 Hits of the 1970s) and the other had a guest hosted show.

Unfortunate that song didn't get to be introduced by Casey. BTW, does the 11/17/79 show have one of the weakest #1 songs of the first AT40 Casey era? I don't think "Still" is a terrible song, and I certainly like a lot of the Commodores' stuff. But I'll never get how that song ever got a whiff of #1...

"Rapper's Delight" was definitely a groundbreaking song.

Your local station must play the single edit, with shorter intro and excised bridge before the final chorus. Brian

It was also used several times as an LDD. It's a pleasant ballad but one that's just kind of a soft background sound, unless you pay attention and can relate to the lyrics as many did. For a study in contrasts, compare "Still" to another Lionel Richie composition that ends this weekend's 80s show, the uptempo party favourite "All Night Long". BTW, in case anyone was wondering, KOKZ states on their website that they will play the complete four hour 1979 countdown (the site left some question if they'd play the full 1978 show that was on a couple of weeks ago, which they did.)

It would be interesting if, with a little date fudging, the 11/17/1979 and 11/27/1982 shows were slated for broadcast the same weekend. Not only are both songs by Lionel Richie, but they also sound very much alike.

Not only are both songs by Lionel Richie, but they also sound very much alike. You could also get two Lionel Richie ballads at #1 by airing an August 1978 show ("Three Times a Lady") with an August 1981 one ("Endless Love"), though it hasn't happened yet.

That's just it--I wouldn't go so far as to call "Still" elevator music, but it's not far above that. And a song that evaporated not long after its chart run was done. "All Night Long" can still be heard a decent amount even today. "Three Times a Lady" stuck around for a long time after it fell off the charts as well. "Truly"...I feel like that one didn't have as much staying power, but I feel like it didn't go away right away either.

Not only are both songs by Lionel Richie, but they also sound very much alike. I used to get those two songs confused many years ago, sometimes even now if I tune into one of them halfway through.

Backing up to this past weekend's 76 show: I've noticed in listening these last few years that Casey seemed to always call the act performing "A Fifth of Beethoven" the Walter Murphy Band. Would anyone know why he didn't include "and the Big Apple," as it's given on the label of the 45?

I thought, by looking at the past charts, “Still” was still in the top 40 well into January 1980. Its last week in the top 10 was Jan. 12 (on a guested show), when the song briefly bounced back to No. 6, before dropping to No. 22 on Jan. 19, the final week in the top 40, eight weeks after reaching No. 1. So probably a song that, as someone memtioned, had staying power and resonated with the public. And lots of people liked — and still love — Lionel and his soulful vocal style. Brian
