I actually do not mind the song, but it was truly not worthy of a ten-week #1 stay, and it kept several other songs that should have made #1 out of the top spot. I would argue the same for "Physical" three years later. I am not sure I agree that You Light Up My Life was not a blockbuster hit in the fall of 1977. The song's appeal crossed over several segments of society at the time. I recall being in a class one day, in high school, and a guy started singing the song and most of the rest of the joined in--showing the song's wide appeal. It did spend 8 weeks at #1 in Cash Box, 10 weeks at the top spot in Billboard and 13 weeks at #1 in Record World; not to mention 6 weeks of the top of the Radio & Records air play chart. I guess it depended on the local market. In my area 'YLUML' weas just not that big of an airplay hit, as I explained in my post above. "Boogie Nights" was substantially bigger. Of course I have no idea about actual single sales.

Thanks for your answers, everybody.
For me, I guess the thing that irritates me about this "you either like it or you don't" argument is basically that. I think the guy that commented about its widespread appeal, especially during the song's original run, probably put it best.
(To add: Dick Bartley will not play the song and (apparently) does not have YLUML in his library. OK, the song doesn't exactly hit the classic hits format, but he won't even play it as part of a theme where the song fits, such as "Top hits of Fall 1977" -- you'll be likely to hear "Star Wars/Cantina Band" or "How Deep Is Your Love" as the "No. 1 hit" of fall 1977 -- or even as a request.)
I admit that a lot of songs these days for me probably fit the same "OK, it's spent enough time at No. 1, time for something else" category. For me, it's probably the mega-run No. 1 country hits ("Meant To Be," "Body Like a Back Road" and "Cruise," all from the past 6-7 years), is an example. But so could many pop hits, again, all from the 2010s: "Old Town Road" and "Despacito" are two examples.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth.

I would argue the same for "Physical" three years later. The only thing is, "Physical" blocked only one song from the top spot, "Waiting For A Girl Like You". The Debby Boone song kept four songs out of #1: "Keep It Comin' Love" by KC & The Sunshine Band (broke their Top Ten #1 streak), "Nobody Does It Better", "Boogie Nights" and "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". Of those songs, the Carly Simon song was my favorite (and that song did manage to sneak in a week at the top on the R&R charts). Crystal Gayle also deserved a few weeks on top. I don't mind Heatwave not hitting #1, since I'm not into that type of music (as if you didn't already know that, LOL) Hervard,
Crystal Gayle did spend two weeks at #1 on the Cash Box chart, after Debby's 8 week run at the top. Maybe the chart guys at Cash Box got tired of Lighting Up Their Lives and it Made Their Brown Eyes Blue. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

It'll be good to hear "Take Five" as Premiere deleted it the first time around.

Man — an I may have asked before, but ... — I still don’t get why so many people so dislike “ You Light Up My Life” by Debby Boone. Seriously. (Matt: Posting here to get the conversation started.) Brian I don't dislike the song, but it's not one I would go out of my way to hear. I think it's one of those cases where it was a slow dramatic ballad, one which touched many people deeply, and one that just didn't appeal to many other people. I think anytime you have a song like that, which spent 10 weeks at #1 and five months on the top 40, and therefore got played ad nauseam during that time, there is a polarizing effect--if you loved the song, you probably could listen to it anytime, but if you didn't love it and want to hear it that much, you were really sick of it by the time it dropped off the chart. The same could be said for most other songs that spent 6+ weeks at #1 and 20+ on the top 40. I looked back at one of my Billboard reference books to refresh my memory on what charttoppers of the '60's, '70's, and '80's spent six or more weeks on top. Out of all of them, the only one (IMHO) that definitely deserved all of its weeks on top was the gorgeous "Theme from A Summer Place" by Percy Faith (9 weeks). Three others are borderline worthy of their duration on top: "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (7 weeks), "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"/Marvin Gaye (7 weeks), and "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In" (6 weeks). All the others (IMHO) are either mediocre to bad and are not worthy of any weeks at #1, or are good enough to go #1, but not for as long as they did.

Using your criteria, the following songs 'deserved' their 6+ stays at the top: Both Beatle records, "...Hold Your Hand" and "Jude"; "Tossin' and Turnin'"; "Aquarius"; "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; "My Sharone"; and (borderline) "Every Breath You Take". Strictly my humble opinion, of course. Also, another factor is that at various periods the 'churn' on the charts was greater than in others, so you had multi-year periods such as September 1972--November 1976 and the entire second half of the '80s from February 1985 on when no song lasted six or more weeks at the top. Not to mention the two-year period from June '73 until June '75 when nothing stayed #1 more than 3 weeks!

Though it was #1 for only 4 weeks (and of some 'recent' relevance with the October 7, 1972 program), Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" kept two #2 songs out of the top spot -- Lobo's "I'd Love You To Want Me" and "Nights In White Satin" by the Moody Blues.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 10/20/79 2nd Guess - 10/19/74
Nearly four months since a 1979 show was last offered. 1974 is also coming due, and this show hasn't been played in a long time...

According to the 70s show listing, 10/19/1974 last aired in 2008. There aren't many 70s or 80s shows that haven't been played in 10-plus years. At least 9/29/1984 got off that list recently.
