Here's a chart oddity that I don't recall being mentioned here before. There have been many examples over the years where a Top 40 solo artist made a name for himself or herself initially as a member of a group. John Fogerty and Linda Ronstadt are a couple of examples. But along comes Foster Sylvers (with “Misdemeanor” on the July 28, 1973 chart) who turned that around. He was first established as a Top 40 solo act, and then continued his fame as a member of The Sylvers -- and never reached the Top 40 again as a solo artist. Are there any other similar examples? Would Kiki Dee count Peteski? She reached with her Band, then collectively with Elt, and never again. Yes, in a roundabout way. That's a good one.

"I Go Crazy" took its sweet time climbing the Billboard Hot 100-I remember it made its top forty debut in November 1977-It didn't reach its peak position of # 7 until the spring of 1978-It spent a total of 39 weeks on the Hot 100.

It was on the Hot 100 from 8/27/77 until 5/27/78 -- almost went from August until June! (funny, that would be no big deal at all with today's Hot 100 charts, but was an eternity back then). It's top 40 run was from 10/29/77 until 4/15/78...if my math is correct, that's 25 weeks? The record Hot 100 run of "I Go Crazy" would be eclipsed in 1982 by Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", mainly due to that song's initial run up the chart before hitting the top 40, then near drop out of the Hot 100, only to somehow catch fire and take off into the top 10. Then the oddball 1982 chart dynamics helped it hang on in the low 90's for a few extra weeks before it finally exited the Hot 100 for good, after spending 43 weeks on the Hot 100 I believe? (44 if you add the one week it bubbled under before climbing into the top 100).

I Go Crazy spent 37 weeks on the Cash Box chart in 1977/78, while Tainted Love came up one week short spending 36 total weeks.
I believe The Twist spent the most weeks on the Cash Box chart--a total of 43 (although, of course that was two chart runs). One other interesting chart fact concerning Cash Box, was that Rock Around The Clock charted three times; reached #36 in 1954 (2 weeks), #1 in 1955 (29 weeks) and #36 in 1974 (11 weeks) for a total of 42 weeks on the chart(s).

If I remember correctly, the countdown from 8/27/77 featured the Elvis Presley tribute. And if you were listening to the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 D2k show that aired this past weekend (August 17-18, 2002), Rick had a tribute to Elvis. Somehow he had the actual broadcast from a newscaster back in 1977 reporting on his death. This tied into Elvis being back on the chart at #39 with JXL and "A Little Less Conversation."

Just watched The Wrecking Crew documentary on youtube, which included the drum pattern used on the original version of A Little Less Conversation by Elvis.
If you haven't seen the doc. you owe it to yourself to spend the two hours to see how these great studio musicians helped create most of the biggest hits of the 1960's.

Prediction for next week's show:
1st Guess - 8/31/74 2nd Guess - 9/02/72
Almost has to be 1974 next week, but just in case it isn't, a September show could happen (the 1st will be on Sunday of next weekend). 1974 was last played in May, so suffice it to say it's due. 8/31/74 last aired in 2013.

I think the next 1972 mono2stereo conversion will be 9/16/72 which was played only once back in 2007. 1978 is over due but the 9/09/1978 was a "B" show last year.

And 9/16/78 has only been played once (in 2009), so it's a decent bet we could get both 9/16 shows in September--maybe as an A/B pairing even, but that would mean '78 would have to be the 'B' show. It's almost more likely you get one of those shows the weekend of September 14th and the other the following weekend.

Remember Rick was working in Memphis at the time. Say what you will about him as a person but he seems very respectful of music history. He may well have taped the newscast for posterity and even if he didn't he probably has an in with the station whose newscast he used and was able to get the tape, which they presumably didn't record over also due to the historical significance.

If 8/31/74 is the chosen show next weekend,we'll hear Cheech & Chong's "Earache My Eye" which is a certifiable classic-It also became their highest charting single peaking at # 8 in October of 1974.

Glad we're finally getting a 1977 show next week! Not sure this has been pointed out, but we have not had an August, 1977 show, even as a "B" offering, since 2014.

Good news for those of us who like to listen to WSQL for AT40 70s on Thursday evening: All the regular season football games for Brevard HS are scheduled for Friday this year. Pray for no hurricanes to alter their schedule this year.
