Why would stations start it an hour earlier if the show is only 3 hours?

My local station KFRC, 106.9 in San Francisco, aired a three hour version of the first half of Top 100 of 1978, starting at their regular 6:00 a.m. Way too early for me to be up on a Saturday, but the time may be convinient for someone on the east coast if they broadcast on the web.
I was curious as to how much editing was done to fit the originally four hour show into three hours. After listening, I could tell there was quite a bit. They had to average 16 - 17 songs per hour. By comparison, the 3 hour AT40 shows usually had 13 - 14 songs per hour and the 8 hour year end top 100's had 12 - 13 songs per hour. By the mid 80's, the original 8 hour year end countdowns typically had to edit a lot of the records to fit them into the alotted time.
The original 8 hour version of the Top 100 of 1978 did not feature any extras and most songs played were the single / 45 / 7" version. I listed any different versions of songs played in the original 8 hour Top 100 of 1978, such as LP, AT40 edits from back in 1978, or promotional singles shorter than the commercial singles.
1 Shadow Dancing (commercial single / LP) 9 Boogie Oogie Oogie (AT40 edit) 11 Grease (At 40 edit) 12 I Go Crazy (AT40 edit) 15 Lay Down Sally (LP) 18 With A Little Luck (AT40 edit of Commercial single or LP, edited to approx. 4:10) 26 Baker Street (LP earlier fade) 31 Jack And Jill (LP) 33 Sometimes When We Touch (LP) 34 Last Dance (AT40 edit) 36 Hot Blooded (LP) 38 The Closer I Get To You (commercial single / LP) 42 Use To Be My Girl (LP) 45 Everlasting Love (AT40 edit) 48 Slip Sliding Away (AT 40 edit or promotional single (Not sure which)) 49 The Groove Line (AT40 edit)
58 This Time I'm In It For Love (LP) 68 Hey Deanie (AT 40 edit) 70 What's Your Name (AT40 edit) 84 Fool (If You Think It's Over) (LP) 89 You Can't Turn Me Off (AT 40 edit or promotional single (Not sure which)) 93 Don't Look Back (promotional single) 97 The Name of The Game (commercial single / LP) 99 Hollywood Nights (promotional single) 100 Deacon Blue (commercial single faded to about 6:05)

is there any way that i could write to someone to complain about this past weekend's AT40 the 70's show? i didn't like the fact that they cut and edited songs just to fit the 3 hour show...why not offer to the radio stations a special 4 hour edition of AT40 the 70's for the year end edition. i am sure that radio stations wouldn't mind, as well as their listeners. i would rather have the full unedited countdown.

I agree dadetim. I don't think stations would mind doing an extra hour, especially during the holidays. And if they insist on doing only 3 hours, they should have played the top 80 from 1970 or 72, which was two 3 hour shows so editing would not have been necessary.

I've been listening to AT40:The 70s for about six weeks or so. This is the first four hour show that I've heard played. Have they played any of the four hour shows in the past, and if so, what did they do? I remember AT40 Flashback started with the show's second hour.

they played the show of the week ending october 14, 1978. they did edit songs so it would fit the 3 hour time frame (foxy's get off was about a minute long on that episode, compared to the 3 or 4 minutes that the song originally is). i know xm played the original 1978 year in review show uncut. does anyone have that copy?

Shannon, first, Happy New Year!, and second, you're doing great work with AT40. Now here's an out-of-left-field question for you: Your gender is listed as male, but I thought I've seen you mention something about playing girls' softball. I'm confused! Rest assured, I'm not looking for a date, I'm just curious . FYI to be fair, I am male, 36 and married. And I have a dog. And I'm not on Facebook so my next question isn't "will you 'friend' me?"

I wonder if this week's At40 shows will feature a guest host. Like maybe it would be a good week to see if the show airs the Dick Clark episode from 1972 since we ring in the New Year with him this past week.
But I think we might see a show hosted by Casey that originaly aired in Mid-Jan since the first show of the year was hosted by a subsitute host in the first chart week of the year.

This week's show will feature 1/16/71 & 1/24/87 respectively. For future reference you might want to check out www.kooltulsa.com/pages/amtop40.htmlthey seem to put the dates online on a Thursday morning normally (?). But, frankly speaking, one would expect it's Premiere's task to put up a more informative website than the one currently on display... However, some of their decisions were not so lucky recently ;-) or else, why did they have to squeeze 18 (!) songs into the final hour of the 1978 countdown show? Of course, they left out the montage of #1 songs (ca. 4 mins.), which equals the average run time of 2 songs in that hour. But I wish they had included the montage instead of the optional extra song for hour 6.

I just took a peak at XM's schedule for January 12 and there's a program description for the January 1, 1972 program. It references that there's three Carpenters songs in that particular show. Accordingly, that would be the Top 40 of 1971. FYI.

Also, THANKS a ton for the latest batch of 1972 cue sheets!! I'll have those posted in the next day or so. Shannon

Shannon;
Thank you for your great job in remastering the AT40 programs. All of AT40 fan in the world enjoy and love your works.
Would you advise us of the Premier's cue sheet site which you referred to, where possible? If not, would you advise an appropriate person of Premier Radio Networks of our strong desire to find the AT40 program details on their publicly available site? I would appreciate your cooperation.

I am a bit puzzled - this week's show is announced by Premiere as of 1/16/71, but what they actually play appears to me to be the countdown from the week before... or am I just confusing things? (chart date - show date?)
