Next weekend's shows and optional extras: A: June 29, 1974:Hour #1: "The Night Chicago Died" - Paper Lace (#74) Hour #2: "Rock Me Gently" - Andy Kim (#66) Hour #3: "You And Me Against The World" - Helen Reddy (#63) This is the official Premiere version with the guesstimated chart. Not sure if Ken Martin's version with the official Billboard chart will use different extras. According to a Facebook post this morning, the first hour OE for WTOJ's version of 6/29/1974 will be "La Grange" by ZZ Top.

An oddity from the bottom of the 6/30/79 Hot 100: -9 of the 10 songs between 80 and 89 were debuts. Only 3 of those made AT40. (Let's Go by The Cars, I Do Love You by G.Q. and I Know A Heartache When I See One by Jennifer Warnes) -All 11 songs below I Know A Heartache When I See One were on the way down. 6 of those made AT40, including one of this week's droppers. (In The Navy by The Village People)

By the time the June 29, 1974 show shipped to AT40’s affiliates, the staff knew of the chart discrepancies between their list and Billboard’s Hot 100. In fact, stations were notified in advance of these inconsistencies.
And with Casey’s in-show promos during the 6/29/74 countdown this weekend, the best-of 70s artists special (from 7/6/74) is a fitting listen for the July 4th holiday.

Was he going by the actual chart or the imagined chart the week before???

And then Casey was out the following week (7/13), and returned on 7/20.

If you listen carefully to the 6-29-74 show,Casey only mentions Billboard Magazine one time. That happened during the closing credits after the playing of the #1 song.

Casey said in the closing that the chart was based on the AT40 staff's estimates of probable chart positions. And that was the only such mention. Whereas in the 6/9/73 show when several songs were in the wrong positions because of a late Billboard retabulation of the chart, Casey mentioned that several times.

A lot of mistakes in this show if you count all the chart estimates and maybe a Casey jinx on tying the record for instrumental #1s since the only one to hit the top 40 the rest of the year was "Machine Gun" that did not get too far up the chart. But they got some things right and one of them was playing the long version of "On and On". Best song for Gladys and co. and also writer, producer Curtis Mayfield IMO. Btw the record for #1 instrumentals was tied in 1975. (Record Research counts "Fly Robin Fly" as an instrumental).

Almost every elgible year has been featured as the "A" show 3 times. 1971 has been featured twice. 7/10/71 last aired in 2015.
Given that, I'll go with 7/9/77 over 7/10/71 for next weekend. 7/9/77 last aired in 2021. 1977 was last the "A" show in April. Every other year has been featured since.

I'll predict 7/10/1971 for the weekend of 7/6/2024 or 7/13/2024. 7/9/1977 has been featured 3 times as an A show since 2015 (2016, 2018 & 2021).

WTOJ will play an encore presentation of the 6/29/74 AT40, using the actual published Billboard chart, on Sunday immediately after its first play of it ends, around 12:15 Eastern due to supersizing.
