I just wrapped up supersizing a '78 show that will air later this year. To get the show down to "Premiere size" I needed to edit out over 26 minutes from my expanded version of the countdown. This should come as no surprise given that AT40 would soon make the switch to the 4 hour format.

I wonder what the cutoff for supersizing is. I always thought that songs were starting to be edited sometime in 1975. I didn't realize early 1974 had that many edits, but not on WTOJ... Supersized Sunday 9am EST There's an upcoming show from 1973 where it was necessary to chop 2:30 from both hour 1 and 2 and a whopping 7:30 from hour 3. That one will be supersized as well.

Those 1978 shows especially towards the end of the 3 hour era were brutal. Hey you guys and gals that like to guess the shows, Ken just gave you a hint for later in the year...lol

That 1973 show mentioned about was the 2/17/1973 show from a few weeks back. Seems like that was kind of an outlier. 1978 shows are pretty dependable in terms of 20+ minutes being added back in for a Supersized show.

I think it was in fall 1975--about the time when "Shuckatoom" became the opening music--that AT40 began including extras in many, though not all, regular countdowns after three years of seldom doing so. This lasted until about April 1978, when they mostly stopped playing non-countdown extras until Long Distance Dedications began that summer. I think that was around when they were granted the expansion to four hours starting that fall, and so they were saving up the extras and their attendant stories for then when they would be needed to fill time.
After September 1978, the next AT40 that was just 40-1 with no full non-countdown songs played was Shadoe's first show on August 13, 1988, and that was a special case as it included a special "theater of the mind" type intro and no Long Distance Dedications. The next such extra-less show was April 22, 1989 (the one LDD that week, Vanessa Williams' "Dreamin'", was on the chart.)

What would the B show be? Maybe 3/31/1979? I hope not because 3/31/1979 was the A show this week last year. 3/24/1979 & 3/27/1976, which aired in 2019 & 3/25/1978 (2021) would seem like better options. The B show is 3/24/1979, source Facebook.

This week's optional extras:
March 23, 1974:
Hour #1: "Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (NR) Hour #2: "Dancing Machine" - Jackson 5 (#58) Hour #3: "The Entertainer" - Marvin Hamlisch (#88; debuted)
"Sweet Home Alabama" replaces Chicago's "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long", to honour the late Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
March 24, 1979:
Hour #1: "Love Takes Time" - Orleans (#89; debuted) Hour #2: "Disco Nights (Rock Freak)" - GQ (#76) Hour #3: "Goodnight Tonight" - Paul Mccartney & Wings (NR) Hour #4: "Renegade" - Styx (#63)
Same as in 2019, when Premiere aired these same two shows in reverse order (1979 A, 1974 B). "Goodnight Tonight" would enter the Hot 100 the following week at #38.

The single edit of "Free Bird" would actually make more sense, as Skynyrd's first LP that contains that signature track had been out since September 1973, while "Second Helping" which contains "Alabama" was still about a month from its release. Just my opinion.

Getting ready for 3/24/74 on WSQL-This should be an awesome countdown with the exception of "Seasons In the Sun" & "Hooked On A Feeling".
