Yes. His tenure began sometime in 1974. The issue of August 18, 1973, to be exact. The masthead referred to him as Willis Wardlow. He'll always be Bogus Bill to me. And Bill's career ended in 1982 thanks to the strange charts with some big droppers from the top 10 and songs spending many weeks in peak positions.

Actually he was replaced in April 1983; IIRC the Billboard issue of 4/30/83 announced a change in the chart director. I don’t know the precise reason for that, but it’s entirely possible that it was because Wardlow’s rules were resulting in some ridiculous looking charts—it’s unlikely people were buying and stations were playing the same songs at the same level for weeks and then stopping all at once.

Bam !! Debuting at number 40… the worst song ever to hit the forty!!! ? Not sure it's the worst ever, but certainly a big departure from their other songs...it's the Carpenters with "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft".

A song I've always liked, along with the Klaatu original that they covered. The Carpenters' "Passage" album is quite good, IMO. They took some chances with it, which is a good thing. Mind-boggling to me that anyone could consider it 'the worst song ever to hit the 40!!!'. Especially since we had recently been subjected to both "Float On" AND "Telephone Man".

I think the "Passages" album also contained a minor follow-up hit "Sweet Sweet Smile" written by Juice Newton which peaked at # 44.

"Telephone Man" is a silly cringefest. How it got to the top 20 I'll never understand.

Meri Wilson who had a hit in the summer of 1977 with "Telephone Man" recorded a follow up called "Peter The Meter Reader"-While that song never charted,it has recieved airplay on "The Dr.Demento Show" & appears on his "25th Anniversary Collection" which Rhino Records released in 1995.

And she later did a song about the 'cable guy'. All three service techs met the same fate!

Not the worst ever, but perhaps the bookends of that particular countdown may have been the worst. I would take "Calling Occupants" over this week's Crapton & Tenille's "Muskrat Love" any day. One could argue that Captain & Tenille kind of bogarted The Carpenters' career starting in 1975. Ironically, both acts were on the A&M label. I hope the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute stays in the regular show and not on the AT40 extra status.

Thanks! I guess that for over three months without play, SXM 70's won't run the show, but at least we get it on AT40 the 70's Are the "B" shows already Christmas options, or is that later in November? Thanks again--77 is such a great year!
