A couple of chart discrepancies between Billboard and Record World on April 15, 1972…
…Bread’s “Diary”, “Little Bitty Pretty One” by the Jackson Five, Sly & The Family Stone's "Smilin'" and “Isn’t Life Strange” by the Moody Blues were among Record World’s Top 40 but not listed anywhere on Billboard’s Hot 100.
…Donny Osmond’s “Puppy Love” and Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold” ranked among AT40’s Top 10 but were not found on Record World’s Top 40 chart.
Now, let’s get the countdown started!
I've seen these chart discrepancies quite often between Record World, Cash Box & Billboard--as I've been looking at the charts of all three over the last couple of years. Some of this can be explained about how each magazine determined their chart. Both Record World & Cash box didn't add airplay to their Top 100 singles charts until the mid to late 1970's. it wasn't unusual for certain singles to be dropped by any one of the big three once a song exited the Top 40, a practice that was common in the 1960's but became less show as we reached the end of the 1970's.
