Sorry, but I don't always buy that things have to "evolve" to appeal to today's listener or viewer. Iconic entertainment really does not. Look at "Wheel of Fortune" or "Jeopardy" or "60 Minutes" or "Meet The Press" or "Entertainment Tonight" the same shows for the last 30+ years and still played/formatted the same way. "New generations" still watch old shows on TV Land or Andy Griffith in syndication. If you want to say, that's apples and oranges, then take other radio countdown institutions: American Country Countdown and Bob Kingsley's Top 40. Neither of these shows are that far off from when the style in which they were originally created and still are going strong without a host forcing their own style on it. Are you telling me that these hosts and shows don't have a "new" generation of listeners/viewers as AT40 does? Why does AT40 have to be an also ran to Ryan's other ventures? AT40 is an iconic institution as much as any radio or TV show. American Top 40 deserves better. American Top 40 deserves to be a priority to someone. Why did AT40 have to "evolve"? It doesn't really, and it hasn't. It's actually regressed. It has been adapted to Ryan's style of his "On Air Show". Many of the "Current AT40 listeners" probably don't even know it's a different show. I dont' really see what Shadoes' style in 1988 has to do with the topic of the current state of AT40. ACC changed in 1978 when Bob Kingsley took it over. Went from jokes every song and segment to a no nonsense countdown. It was such a god awful change he only hosted it for 27 years. The new ACC does interviews, extras, and puts focus on the artist...you know, the same thing AT40 does. Also, Kix Brooks has an overnight daily show that I'll bet probably airs a lot of those same interviews you hear on ACC. Yet, somehow this gets a pass with you. Now your list: 60 Minutes- usually follows a sporting event and I believe may be the only broadcast network show on at 7. That helps it tremendously. ET- no idea. Never appealed to me. WOF - other than gameplay it is MUCH different than it was 30 years ago. Jeopardy - It has remained the same. However, when the day comes that Alex Trabek goes may be the day they either voluntarily or are forced to revamp/update parts of the shows look, feel, or gameplay. See the next item for what happens when you don't. MTP- It stayed the same because the format fit what Tim Russert was comfortable doing. There was a time there were multiple hosts on that show asking questions (thus the "press" in the title). Guess what? It changed! Russert was successful because it was his element. When he died and David Gregory took over that format, what happened? Now Chuck Todd has it and it has modified somewhat. Things change. Most things have to. Broadcast news has changed. Sportscenter has changed. But for the sake of this discussion: RADIO has changed. No station I hear in 2015 sounds like it did in vibe, feel,or attitude like it did in 1985 or 1995. With that, radio shows must change to or they die. That gets ushered in usually with a new host. That's what happened in 2004. The idea that just because you don't like something means he must be ruining it or he sucks is ridiculous. I haven't liked Sportscenter in 20 years but it's working so I can't say they don't know what they are doing.

Thanks Paul. Everything I was thinking.
Plus, the demographic for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy and CHR radio couldn't be more different.
The 20-34 female demographic wants to hear the show Ryan is hosting. That is why that is the show that is produced. Plus, PPM has killed personality radio. I guarantee if Casey was alive, healthy, and still hosting a show, AT10 would have far less talk (and AT20 would have been cancelled at some point) - listen to a new CT40 with Bob Kingsley and then one of the ACC Rewind. Note the faster pace and much shorter talk segments due to the joy of the world of the PPM

BTW, about “60 Minutes” before fall 1976 “60 minutes” even started earlier at 6pm on CBS, while ABC started a little bit later than NBC on Sundays. But after 1976, all the main networks fixed their Sunday primetime starting together at 7pm (barring overtime sporting events). Even when Fox started in the mid-80s, they also had an extra hour of prime time on Sunday at 7.

I'm glad we all have this venue to discuss this topic and I respect all your opinions. I will say I am glad AT40 continues to exist and that Ryan has done a good job at keeping it relevant and on the air.

Oh yeah, I know NBC airs the NFL pregame show no one watches at 7 because they are busy watching the "getting longer and longer by the year" late games that routinely last until nearly 8pm now.

I would not watch the pregame even if the late games ended at 7. Don't watch the CBS, FOX or ESPN pregames either. 10 hours or whatever it is of live football games on a Sunday is more than enough. Certainly don't need to pad it watching pregames esp when I want to hear an AT40, CT40 or whatever show at some point in the day. There you go. Now you know my schedule for fall and early winter Sundays.

Just the way the Hot AC format has changed and become so close to CHR, I wouldn't think many stations would want a Casey hosted show. AC today is really the Hot AC of 10-15 years ago

I'll give you that possibly he hosts AT40 more now than he ever has, but the reason this thread was created is because of the perception that Ryan's last priority in his career is AT40. That's why, although I agree with you he's a good broadcaster and TV host, no one who loves American Top 40 will ever respect him as much as Casey or Shadoe. Heck, Shadoe had Hollywood Squares and a TV acting career, but still put AT40 first, even with the s*** he was given from ABC. Now AT40 is an offshoot of his "On Air" show. Sorry but Ryan deserves some criticism on how he is handling the AT40 franchise. As a host, I find him better than Shadoes latter years and on par with him in terms of respect as a host. Comparing anyone to Casey Kasem who hosted shows for 39 years and was the co-creator of such an endeavor is ridiculous. No, he doesn't deserve criticism because he hasn't done anything wrong to it. There are writers, programmers, radio execs, etc all involved in the production of his shows. Its not all him any more than CT40/AT40 version 2 were all Casey's. For over 11 d**n years I've been hearing how he sucks, he won't make it 5 years, he won't make it 10...well here it is beyond 11 and he's going strong. In terms of AT40 host longevity he's done so longer than Shadoe, longer than Casey Kasems second stint, and in 7 years he will hosted longer continually than any other. Regardless of what you think, that says something about his talent, ability, and interest in doing the show. A show he himself listened to growing up and admiring the host of! Well said, Paul.

AC today is really the Hot AC of 10-15 years ago I agree, but I'm thinking along the lines of CC owned station is airing AT40 with Ryan, HAC station in same market owned by Cumulus wants a show and they cannot have AT40's HAC version in that case.

I get that. I do feel the show may have been cut to two hours as the format does not really play recurrents and golds like it once did.

^I assume that statement also applies to the country genre. That is, if ACC reflects the format. 95% of the extras played on the current ACC are from this decade which I find strange. But if the format dictates that strategy, then I suppose it makes sense.

Oddly, Bob Kingsley's new countdowns are still top 40s, but his old ones now being replayed are only top 30s (first hour missing.)

But if the format dictates that strategy, then I suppose it makes sense. In the times I've heard it, yes. But, I'll also say that country tends to play more songs from the previous decade or two more so than CHR or even HAC does now. That may be changing, but it had been the case. So, even ACC they could air some songs from 1995 and depending on the artist it wouldn't be the end of the radio world as they know it or anything. I mentioned this in another thread, but as an examole of an ACC format change, in 1994 when I was listening regularly the first time the ACC Archive featured an alphabetical review of all #1s from the past 25 years or so. Literally that's what Bob would say occasionally. So I always assumed 1970-current. In 1995, when they were still doing this theme it just became alphabetical #1s of the 80's and 90's.
