70's:"Seasons in The Sun"-Terry Jacks,"Come Sail Away"-Styx 80's:"Mr.Roboto","The Best Of Times","Don't Let It End"-Styx 90's:"Ice Ice Baby"-Vanilla Ice 00's:"Who Let The Dogs Out"-Baha Men Ouch! I gotta disagree with Seasons in the Sun...man, that's one of my all-time favorites! It's funny though how so many people voted down "Mr. Roboto"..no wonder the band fought and broke up right after that crappy album was released. Tommy Shaw was the best thing that ever happened to that band, and it's a shame he didn't have more control over Dennis DeYoung. Dennis single-handedly ruined Styx.

Dennis did not ruin Styx. He formed the band. Tommy is nothing but an ingrate! He complained about Babe in 1979 but the only weak track on Paradise Theater is the wimpy She Cares.
Now, I'll agree that the stage presentation of Kilroy was a bit much, but lyrically and musically, Dennis MADE Styx, his voice as well!

I will skip the 60's since there is nothing I can think of off the top of my head that offends me that much, but as for the other decades...
70's: "Imagine" by John Lennon (beautiful melody with terrible lyrics), "In the Navy/Y.M.C.A" by the Village People (really, aren't those two the same song?)
80's: "Keep On Loving You" REO Speedwagon (and really most songs by REO), Anything by Air Supply, but if I had to pick one, "Even the Nights are Better" floats to the top (honorable mention: "When the Children Cry" by White Lion - just an awful song)
90's: "Smooth" Santana and Rob Thomas (gets my award for the most overplayed song in the history of radio), "All the Small Things" by Blink 182 (again, a band I simply loathe--could really pick any of theirs) (honorable mention "Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba - what the f was that?)

Wow I never thought anyone would ever put down the biggest song released only once in the rock era. In the 50 year HOT 100 anniversary issue, Billboard ranked the top songs and The Twist was #1 and Smooth was #2. I bought the CD that comes from almost solely because of that song. As they say, different strokes...........

I haven't purposely listened to radio in almost 20 years and even I have heard "Smooth" so much that I am tired of it. When I first heard it, I enjoyed it. Today, I don't ever want to hear it again.

Now, I'll agree that the stage presentation of Kilroy was a bit much, but lyrically and musically, Dennis MADE Styx, his voice as well! Nah, Dennis ruined Styx. The best songs were all sung by Tommy. Mademoiselle, Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man), Renegade, Blue Collar Man (Long Nights), Sing For The Day, Boat on the River, Too Much Time on My Hands and Haven't We Been Here Before. Without Tommy, Styx would never have had the commercial success they enjoyed in the late 70's. In the early 1980's, Dennis with his goofy ballads (First Time, Music Time, etc...), rock operas and theme albums destroyed that band. Period.

WOW! Imagine is my fav song of all time!!! John Lennon is WAY overrated. I never cared for his material, personally. I know, a lot of folks will probably be surprised I said that about "Imagine". I have a total love/hate opinion with Lennon's music. It seems like I REALLY like his stuff (e.g. "Instant Karma", "Whatever Gets You Through the Night", "Nobody Told Me", "#9 Dream" and several Beatles tunes, most notably "Come Together"), or I REALLY dislike it. Not sure why... As for "Smooth", reachin is spot on--it wasn't a bad song, but I never thought it was great...and radio stations played it over...and over...and over...and over...until Rob Thomas' voice made me cringe! Guess that's why if I am asked for an "annoying" song, there aren't many I can think of that fit the bill better.

wahoo, you bring up a good point that I have always made about You Light Up My Life and Physical. I understood why YLUML spent 10 weeks at #1 but not Physical and I prefer Physical so I am not biased. YLUML has that unique, worldly feel to it whereas Physical seems like just another #1 song. Hey Jude is another of those unique, worldly feel songs.

***Without Tommy, Styx would never have had the commercial success they enjoyed in the late 70's.
Not quite... For one, Lady was a hit before Tommy joined. Loreli & Sweet Madame Blue were either hits or FM radio hits at that point.
So its hard to say if their success would have continued. Considering that Dennis wrote Come Sail Away and guitar leads could have been all JY, I'm thinking they would have.
Plus Dennis conceived Paradise Theater, their best album. True, Tommy contributed to it. But take out She Cares and Too Much Time On My Hands and the album still stands up with ballads AND rockers like Snowblind, Half Penny Two Penny & Rockin The Paradise.
Yeah, Tommy wrote some good songs... heck, great songs. Many bands can lose a member and go on. But not THE key member. Dennis DeYoung is that key member. Borderline for The Panazzos. The guy Tommy Shaw replaced (John Curulewski) was just as competent a guitar player if not moreso, and he was replaced...

I am strictly speaking from a vocal standpoint. I have always loved his soft falsetto voice. I personally like "She Cares", but to each his own. I do admit that I did begin to love Styx after hearing Loreli and Lady in the mid 70's. But Grand Illusion just blew me away, and it was the first time I was exposed to Shaw's voice work. In either case, Styx (from 75-83) will always be one of my favorite bands...Roboto and all. ;-)

Barbara Ann (Beach Boys Version) The song "Barbara Ann" has been WAY overplayed but what comes to mind is a parody of it that came out in 1979 or 1980 called "Bomb Iran" (during the hostage crisis when the American Embassy in Teheran was seized by revolutionaries)Everytime "Barbara Ann" is played I replace those words in my mind with "Bomb Iran" although I do NOT support an attack on that country.

I guess his attitude about Babe being such a wuss song when She Cares sounds like an Air Supply outtake is kind of ridiculous.
I will say the dual lead vocals by JY & Tommy on Snowblind are favorites of mine.
I also will say check out Styx II if you want a DYNAMITE album. Its the album with Lady!

Since my least favorite songs for the 70s (Imagine) and the 80s (At This Moment) have already been talked about, I'll focus on my least favorite song from the 90s.
Did no one have the nerve to tell Alanis Morissette that she clearly had no idea what the meaning of "irony" was?
She may have thought she was being clever (or pehaps even ironic), but Ironic's lyric were so "unironic" (rain on your wedding day, a free ride when you've already paid - these are just annoyances) that Ironic gets my vote for worst song of the 90s.
