I just got the 2nd of the 3 of them.
A few weeks ago I got the 80's Pete Battistini book and LOVE IT! I kept getting mad at how the "full list was in Rob Durkee's book" so I set out to get it. Its out of print, but I got SO LUCKY!
A few new copies were available but it was the used copy I got on Amazon. Mainly because all of the new ones on there and ebay, were over $100. My used copy: just over $20. It was an old library copy that aside from the library stickers, is in PERFECT condition, hardcover!
I skimmed a bit and had to stop myself, this is careful reading and it looks well put together and is such an essential for a fan such as me. Pete, Rob, you guys did an AMAZING job. I can't wait until the postman delivers the 70's book I ordered. Its on its way according to my email confirmation!
GREAT JOB! BRAVO!

Congrats bme--awesome countdown of 1967 BTW! Looking for your "gems of knowledge" from your latest book--maybe start a section under General Music for trivia to play for fun! I am amazed that in two months you have already achieved Senior Member status--I've been here 13 months and might make it late this month or early May!

My wife ordered Pete's 80s book for me and gave it to me as an early birthday present. I bought his 70s book about 5 years ago and loved it. This was was amazing as well. With Rob's book and the 1978 Yearbook, I guess I now have all 4 books in the AT40 Holy Grail.

rob's book is indeed a good read....I have a photocopy of the 1978 yearbook that was a local library book. didn't know rob's book was out of print. for stuff like that, i'll watch amazon, ebay and the like. maybe even a local used book store. amazon can get needlessly pricey.
I can't seem to get into being interested enough to buy pete's two books. It seems more like a joel whitburn style book of At40, more on stats of the show and such.
Correct me if i'm wrong on this, as I really can't find much online to preview them, and it's such a niche thing, local book stores won't necessarily stock it so you can actually check it out yourself.
While I don't doubt these books are a great resource, I'm more about the stories about the show, where Rob's book doesn't disappoint.

Pete's books are basically a show-by-show recap that includes a list of extras played, question letters, artist updates, archive songs played, mistakes made etc. for each show. They also include reflections from Casey and others involved with the show, as well as testimonials from long-time fans. There's also a list in the back of each book of all stations that carried the show, and a list of dates when each station was mentioned on the show. If you're into details and trivia, these books are invaluable.

The program summary section of Pete's book list about 20 lines of notes for each show - single line entries for highlights, chart oddities & points of interest. It doesn't list the top 40 tunes for that week so readers have to look at Billboard charts or Charismusicgroup's cue sheet for that information. The rest of the book including letters from people that worked with the show and list of radio stations that carried the show. The best part of the book are the AT40 artifacts it included - pictures, advertisements for the show and original news letters sent out to the radio stations and magazine articles.

Thanks for the comments. This confirms it's a great reference. I will consider getting them in the future.
Nice to see Michael Morgan getting back to Pete. He probably has the few shows of Canadian Top 40 to actually exist. Vinyl LP distribution wasn't a common method in Canada when I was in radio, usually reels at 7.5 IPS and Satellite. Telemedia network radio was one of the few if not the only one, which was fortunate for collectors.
Interesting to note that as mentioned in the letter, Michael Morgan and Associates was for sometime in the 70s and 80s a major canadian producer of syndicated shows with the shows noted shows in the letter. I have "The Nissan Night Before Christmas" and a week of "David Suzuki's Discovery" as part of my syndicated show collection if anyone is curious.
There was one countdown in the late 80s distributed by Satellite called "Countdown Canada" with Dan Williamson. I taped a few off the feeds. I'll have to see if I still have the shows. "Entertainment Coast to Coast" a radio entertainment magazine with Kris Eric Stevens via satellite did a weekly "count up" of the top 5 of the week. I have one show as strangely enough for a time it was shipped on tape in canada.
It's great to see someone actually have the time to do such research on AT40. Premiere is lucky to have you guys on their side.

I think I saw that yearbook in a used bookstore two months ago, but it didn't interest me enough to get it. If anyone's looking for it, I saw it at the York Emporium in York, PA. Their website is here: www.theyorkemporium.com/home.html

If everything works out right...there should be a book covering the Shadoe era out in a few years or less...allowing me to complete the trilogy of books started by Pete.

If everything works out right...there should be a book covering the Shadoe era out in a few years or less...allowing me to complete the trilogy of books started by Pete. As noted in the introduction of my 80s book, I will help in any way possible with your effort, including the use of materials from my collection. Just let me know!
