I read on another board that they are going to countdown the top 40 songs of 2010 on both weekends. But, the new Year's weekend show will not be a re-broadcast. There will be different interviews and such. Premiere has actually been getting better in its treatment of AT40-related shows (such as finally giving us the four hour 70s Casey shows), so it seems odd they'd choose to do something like this. Maybe it's Clear Channel's fault? (no song can ever be too overplayed in their world it seems.) Whoever made this decision, it makes no sense to me. If they have so much extra "Entertainment Tonight"-type stuff to play, then it would be better heard either as part of a full top 100 year end, or a regular edition of next week's 40 biggest hits.

I thought of one other possibility just now as well. Maybe those in charge of the decision decided since both weekends contain the actual Christmas and New Years holiday, people might miss one of the weeks of the two part show. So, in order to make things more listener friendly they are just doing it twice so people can hear the top songs of the year, but technically producing 2 different shows for the diehards who do listen every week.

My guess is that they wanted to save money on producing shows, and in addition give Ryan another week off (since the interviews are probably ones recycled from earlier in the year). I certainly hope it's not because they're afraid that stations don't want to play songs that only peaked below the top 40 of the year. ;D

The 2010 year end AT40 does join the list of shows with the same artist starting and ending the countdown, as Ke$ha was at #1 with "Tik Tok" and #40 with "Take It Off" (her "Your Love Is My Drug" was in there too, at #11.) Incidentally, she will also guest host the first AT40 of 2011.

Ryan's too busy doing morning radio, new year's eve, and whatever else to do a Top 100. Miss the days of a host making AT40 their prime committment.

Maybe one of these days there will be a new Top 40 show that uses the ACTUAL Mediabase 24/7 chart that Casey used instead of a chart that Seacrest uses. A man can dream can't he?

No Top 100 Songs for 2011. Ryan says at the end of this weekends AT40 to tune in next week for the Top 40 of 2011. This is the show AT40 will play on Christmas weekend.
Rick Dees says at the end of his show, he will countdown the top songs of Christmas next weekend.

Rick Dees show next weekend it would be probably the one that was posted on rick.com earlier this month and the same for both editions, hit radio and hot ac, which is, IMHO, a good thing , because this next weekend we have everything to do but having time for listening to radio or so. www.rick.com/show/rick-dees-christmas-countdown

WHTZ (Z-100) in New York City never airs "AT 40's" year end countdown-Instead,they run their own version.

Actually Z100 did air the last two years of AT40 year end survey. I think the reason is clear because Seacrest is now a fixture on the 10 am- 2pm shift with his on air show on the station.

AT40 had a Top 50 year-end countdown in 1994, and Christmas Day and New Year's Day follow suit to that of 1994 as well. But then again, 1988 had Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall on the same days as well - yet they still had a full top 100 year-end countdown that year. Ditto for 1983 - and AT40: The 80s will be broadcasting the Top 100 of 1983 this year. But then again, AT40 had a top 50 year-end countdown in 1994, and look at what happened to the show a month later - it was cancelled. Hopefully, to all the current die-hard fans of AT40, this is not the beginning of the end of the second run of AT40. I wouldn't care for the current run myself if it goes off the air, because all the top 40 acts I grew up with are not charting anymore. But I will feel for those die-hard fans out there who care about today's modern pop and (c)rap music.

Its not the beginning of the end. dont panic. Its just the 'new' trend in CHR countdowns. Non of the countdowns are doing a top100 and that includes mediabase itself. They only create a top50 of the year chart. Even radio stations are changing their OWN year end surveys to top40 charts. Plus AT40 started this year end Top40 last year, so expect the trend to continue. On top of that, if AT40 did do a top100, there would be a few songs on the chart that never even charted during the weekly surveys.

AT40s year end in 1994 wasn't even heard in the USA any longer and like you said, was on its way out. I doubt anyone was really putting much effort creatively into it by that point because the writing was on the wall. Plus, I lived in an area where AT40 was still on the air until it ceased US distribution and in 1993 they only aired the last 4 hours of the 8 hour year end show. I can't imagine Orlando was alone in that practice.

This is just the way it is now and I don't expect it to change. Last year was a Top 50 I believe though, but if not doing a Top 100, then 50, 40 it doesn't really matter.
