Interesting "Billboard" blurb on the launch. I wonder what it means by it would debut, "on a barter basis". That has to do with the ad sales side of things - shows such as Rick's would have so many ad spots that they used in each hour of the show, and then affiliate stations would be given the remaining ad spots to fill. If that sounds very familiar, it's because that's exactly what AT40 did too - for the first year and change of the show's existence, and then again upon ABC's acquisition of Watermark in 1982. Barter originally ended for AT40 at the fourth quarter of 1971 (beginning week of 10/2), due to that not being enough of a driver in getting the show onto stations - for whatever reason, once things changed to stations paying to air the show, that's when it really started getting out there. ABC promptly flipped the arrangement back to barter when they acquired Watermark, in effort to get more of a "commitment" from affiliate stations, as apparently the weekly cash payments didn't cut it. (But, of course, that goal of "increased commitment" led to things like ABC's insistence on stations airing their national ads, which in turn led to Rick's show becoming a thing in the first place...)

I have both 11/18 and 11/25 in my collection, and it hadn't changed over yet. So it had to be in December. The next show I have is 2/10/1990. Or, possibly, it changed with the decade.

Interesting "Billboard" blurb on the launch. I wonder what it means by it would debut, "on a barter basis". I have never seen a vinyl of the show before 1/14/84. However listening to that show in January of this year, they did have winners in the weekly contest so I figured syndication had to have happened earlier. I didn't realize that there were already 20 or so stations playing the show before 1/14/84 show. Thanks for the info! Remember that when the original AT40 with Casey Kasem was launched on July 4-5, 1970 there were only 7 radio stations carrying the show but it grew to more over the next couple of weeks and months. Yeah I thought Dees had the same number of stations (7 or so around LA) in 1983 with national syndication starting 1/14/84. I thought the "soft launch" (local/regional) was in 83...apparently they went all in from the beginning.

I’m thinking the same. Probably was 1/6/90 when Superman opening was cut. And a few new jingles were added including the breaking glass one.

The oldest Rick Dees show I've ever heard is the one dated 04/14/83 and that one opened with the SuperDees spoof.
Correction - dated 04/14/84 using the Cash Box chart.

KKMK is also playing 9/18/2004 - making this the first time the app and radio have played the same Dees 2K show in a little over two years. (Not since the 4th of July weekend in 2021, also involving a 2004 show, that weekend's all-request show.) For the app, it's the first time on there, though, as its two previous plays before this were the past two years on KKMK. Also, hilariously, the last song played before the show started was - spoiler alert! - this show's #1 song, "Pieces of Me".

The 90s have updated to September 28, 1991, and Dees 2K has updated to September 23, 2000.
And it looks like it'll be another week where the 80s match radio, meaning they'll also do September 27, 1986 - 1987 is still playing at this typing, but the background image has updated to 1986, so it should fully change over anytime now.
