Hmmm. Slight curve this week - KKMK is indeed doing 2001, but with 12/1 having been on the app last week, they're doing 12/8 instead. At least somebody paid attention to that?
6th time for that one, and first since an odd March airing last year.
It appears that Rick used some kind of "mid-week" chart for this countdown, as multiple songs don't match up to an R&R week around this time, and it can't be explained by just Rick playing switcheroo left and right. One consequence of this: If you're wondering if Rick ever had a debut-less week - THIS IS IT! (Of course, he doesn't mention that that's so.)

Yikes talk about bad timing. I’m currently listening to the 8/24/91 show (it’s excellent BTW) and In Rick’s Dees Sleaze segment he did a story on Kirstie Alley (the actress from Cheers) who died from Cancer earlier tonight.

Now playing: December 13, 1986 December 14, 1996 December 9, 2006 (see below) 6-6-6. None of these have had the background images updated yet, but that should change soon enough. 2006 is captioned as December 16, but with a Sure Shot of "Say it Right", it is instead December 9. But that works out okay, for two reasons: 1) The 9th is closer to this weekend anyway, 2) Neither the 9th nor the 16th have been done before in any case.

I enjoyed the 1996 show. And 26 years later, most of these artists are still with us, except for Prince (Sure Shot), Olivia Newton-John and Melanie Thornton of La Bouche. Anyone I'm missing?

I didn't get to hear some of the 1996 show, but Adam Schlesinger was the leader of The Wonders, and he passed away in 2020 of Covid, in case That Thing You Do! was still on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 in December 1996.

While he did write and compose the song (and sang backup on the record), I'm not seeing that his involvement there went further than that.
Upon checking, 12/14 is when the song peaked at #23 in the countdown - but then, the last two weeks of the year would consist of the Top 96 of 1996, and when 1997 began, it was gone. (On CT40, it spent the last 3 weeks of November at #21, then plummeted fast, falling off on the last weekly countdown of '96 - which for them was 12/21.)

Shaggy at #28 and "Jeremy" at #15 are just plain wild.
"Oh Carolina" was actually still clinging to the Hot 100 that week, though that would be its last (it was #97). And oddly enough, Pearl Jam's actual "hit", "Daughter", would have debuted that week had Rick done a regular countdown (it would have even been the highest debut of the week, at #33).
Also kind of funny to have "Again" at #2 and Ace of Base at #1, considering that's exactly how it turned out on AT40, for 5 weeks straight, with Janet never getting to #1 there (12/4 would be the 3rd week). But a regular countdown this week would have seen "Hero" leap from 3 to 1, pushing Ace of Base back to #3 and Janet to #2.

When Adam passed away, it was Tom Hanks who posted fond remembrance of him, for his performance of the song. He wrote and composed, co-produced, played bass, and sang backup on the chorus. I'd probably post here if one of the actors from the fictional band passed away, but Adam's involvement in real life, in my opinion, belongs in this post, but I can see Mike's point if he thinks it doesn't.

The 90s have updated to December 21, 1991 (yes, for real) and Dees 2K has updated to December 17, 2005.
Just waiting on the 80s.

Don't get me wrong, he's basically half-responsible for the song all by himself. But what you said was, he was the leader of The Wonders. That Thing You Do! had an actual soundtrack album, which included four other songs in addition to the title track (and a "live" version of it) that are credited to the group*, none of which I'm seeing that he contributed to. If you happen to know otherwise on that point, feel free to mention so. *All songs are performer-credited to fictional musicians from the movie. But among ACTUAL musician credits, the title track is the only one I'm seeing his being credited on.
