Worse, 1981 had a similar pitfall to 1984 - with 5/23 now out of the running, the next chart that hasn't yet been done is 6/27. So unless that year goes on a 1984-esque vacation (remember 84's six-month drought in 2016-17?), expect a repeat to be forthcoming. The best that can be hoped for on that score is for it to be either of the next two years to follow 84, as 5/30 and 6/6 haven't been done since 2014 or 2012, respectively.
I'd actually prefer it be 6/6 - not simply because that's the one that hasn't been done longer, but because Memorial Day weekend could feasibly have 1980, 1985, 1988, or 1989 and it'd be something new. First weekend of June would have 1980, 1982, or 1985 that could fit that bill - but those years were all done last month. (At least with 1988 in the Memorial Day slot, that year was last done in March.)
In the meantime, say hello to the newest member of the (at least) Four Time Played Club - and it's a doubly-dubious distinction, as 1984 is now the only year to have two such weeks in that club. (1985, 1987, 1988, and 1989 each have one.)

1981 should be most likely for 5-28-21, since mentioned by Laura, it hasn't been played since February. This would complete each year of the 80's being played at least twice. In the XM Thread, there will only be a Memorial Day Special on the 90's Channel, thus no special for 80's on 8.

What's that?" kick as that hasn't been touched since JANUARY!!At least Pop2K hasn't ignored the very beginning of the decade too and are doing 2000 the first time since February.

I think all of this should be raised to Jim Ryan who programs both channels, we have to figure out why the 90s seems to snub 1990 for some reason...

For a long time, 1990 was also rarely played in the Rick Dees 90s series. Seems like the very early months of the decade get ignored. IMO, the early 1990s had a lot of great hits that a lot of outlets tend to ignore or rarely touch.

Agreed--great music in 1990 by the likes of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, George Michael and Jon Bon Jovi to name just a few! Shame shame for snubbing 1990!

I only ask because it's unlikely that any of the VJs have outright stated this far in advance that there will be no special that week. I'm almost hoping there is because we could be looking at more 1987 and 1988 repeats in future months otherwise. Meanwhile, the 90's is still on there "1990? What's that?" kick as that hasn't been touched since JANUARY!!Yeah, 1990 gets no love. It seems to be one of the most forgotten years in music all around. At least they finally broke the pattern of repeating the same years they played in 2019, after doing so for six straight weeks. This weeks 1999 chart is actually brand new.

NEWSFLASH: Apparently this weekend will feature 1981 after all! It was announced at the end of the last airing of the 1987 show.

Great! If that sticks, then I re-iterate what I said earlier - the best order going forward would see 81-84-80-88.
As it happens, it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to revisit the 2017 playbook and do the 80s special on July 4 weekend - assuming it also sticks that Memorial Day won't have one, and/or that this year will have one. The only "new" options available for that weekend would be:
1983, which has been done twice since the last 81, 84, or 88. 1984, ONLY if it's 6/30, but which probably should see a different week aired between now and then. 1988, also likely to have a different week done between now and then.
All the other first-weekend-of-July charts have in fact been done by now.
Essentially, they and we can afford to have a special put in there this go-round.

Wow, inquiring minds (at least mine) want to know why the change. For anyone who can't wait for 1981, on this General Thread, Rewind Countdown, is doing a Top 40 from that very week, 5-23-81. Great show that is hosted by Joe Cantello.

Part of me thinks it was originally meant to be 1981, but of course someone screwed up and put the wrong little announcement bumper at the end. Maybe it means that 1984 will really be up for Memorial Day weekend.

Laura, that is very likely, and will wrap up May with all years being featured at least twice.

NEWSFLASH: Apparently this weekend will feature 1981 after all! It was announced at the end of the last airing of the 1987 show. This is definitely good news, but highly unusual. In nearly ten years, I only remember them once changing the chart year after the announcement was made (not counting cases where they announced a regular countdown and played a special instead.)

I just heard Mark saying that they are doing this summer block party thing for Memorial Day weekend where they play blocks of summer-related songs every hour so it looks like they definitely aren't doing a special countdown this time.

No, but does that effectively make it a marathon where specific programming (I.E. Big 40) gets pre-empted? Or is this something they've done before and it didn't affect anything?
